If she is singing songs. About freedom and has a talking pet cat, that is in bad taste. If it is a fairly realistic story about a young girl coming to terms with a frightening world around her, kids can handle dark stuff. At the end of the day she believed in a better world and that people were generally good, and that is the message she wanted.

Maybe it'll be like Titanic: The Legend Goes On! Anne and her family will have a moment of realization that it's time to nut up. There's a montage of them learning combat weapon. Then Anne herself goes on to kill Hitler. Her talking cat makes a clever pun and we fade to credits as everyone laughs.

Maybe I should keep my mouth shut. Someone could read that and not realize I'm kidding.

Adapting any horrific event or tragic story into an animated feature is inherently disgusting and disrespectful, as animated features, by their very nature, are an attempt to create lighthearted, child-friendly entertainment and such an adaptation will undoubtedly result in a whitewashing of history.

I can imagine notes from the studio asking if anything can be done about the third act as it rules out any chance of a sequel.

I've been to the Ann Frank Huis.

The book gives me the impression the place was cramped and small. It isn't. It's actually very spacious with upper and lower levels.
They could have so made secret hidng places within their hiding space.

In short, it's like the Tardis. And I mention the Tardis as an aspect to the Ann Frank Huis that could be an element to the animated feature, like the wardobe in the Narnia books.

My Neighbor Totoro

probably saved at least a few lives during its initial theatrical run: the second half of a back-to-back double feature with this.

I was wondering when this was going to show up; I laughed when they wanted me to cry, I cried when they wanted me to laugh.  Tim Curry was awesome as Churchill though, one of the few highlights of the film that doesn't have to be qualified with "unintentional-."

Randal Graves: What handicap? They guy's just in a wheelchair, it's not like he's Anne Frank or something.

Dante Hicks: Anne Frank?

Randal Graves: Yeah, Anne Frank. The chick that was all "duhhh", till the miracle worker showed up and knocked some smarts into her.

Dante Hicks: You're talking about Helen Keller.

Randal Graves: No I'm not, I'm talking about Anne Frank. She was deaf, dumb and blind.

Dante Hicks: No she wasn't. Helen Keller was deaf, dumb and blind.

His Star Trek V review. He was refuting the arguments that William Shatner got screwed over by the executives, by analogizing it to a director trying to make a WWII/Holocaust movie while the studio wants a musical comedy. There comes a point where the director's idea has to yield or else the movie becomes unfitting.

Funny, when saw the headline, I was thinking of a bit from Generation Kill, where one Marine was riffing on how Pocahontas was an abomination when you consider the real story behind it, and how in a century or two, we'd have Disney doing an animated movie about the Holocaust, with a Nazi and a Jew falling in love and singing songs in front of dancing swastikas and the like. He was only off by the date, apparently.

Comedy = tragedy + time, I guess?

After having RTFA I feel like I was the only person in this thread who had seen Waltz with Bashir. If anyone can pull off an animated film involving a family driven story about a time of war and horror, it's the guy who made that movie. Therefore, I'm optimistic.

Nothing wrong with an animated Anne Frank movie - if done respectfully.

I doubt it would be, though.

// Hollywood asked if there would be a sequel to Cabin Fever
// they'd probably monkey with Anne & Pete's ages (or their, ahem, "moments") so as not to get close to pedotown

And I'm not talking about the attack. They were indirectly responsible for the existence of that godawful Michael Bay movie.

And that's not even the WORST animated Titanic movie. There's an even worse one called "The Legend of The Titanic", in which we learn that the Titanic sunk because of a plot by evil whalers and talking sharks, and the main character can talk to dolphins because of a matrix of magic moonbeams, and no one REALLY died on the Titanic because there was life boats for everyone and a giant octopus held the ship together. I wish I was making this up.
