I remember after I started building playlists on Spotify, I went looking for some Led Zeppelin songs and could only find godawful covers.

Maybe in 20 years, it'll be as good as Napster was

I build the list for playing at work, and Led Zeppelin and AC/DC are notably absent. Good thing one of these is getting resolved

Still awaiting AC/DC and King Crimson.

Yeah, some artists are determined to remain dicks about this whole thing.
Sorry guys, we're not going to suddenly go back to buying CDs any more than we would suddenly go back to buying wax cylinders.  Give it up.

Eh. What I like about Google Music is that for anything they don't carry, I can upload myself (up to 20,000 tracks) for free.  And I don't need to subscribe to their "all access" program to stream the music I uploaded.
/subscribed anyway

Ah, Fark.  Where 10 / month to a streaming service is an amazing deal, but 120 / year on music purchases is middle man robbery of the highest order.

All 3 of which probably decided that they don't need, or want, to participate.   Good for them.

$120 a year = 12 CDs at $10 apiece.

That's like 12 hours of music.

What's the joy of listening to a bunch of 1s and 0s on a computer disk?   That's not real music.  I demand the rich, full sound that only analog can provide.  And what's up with "oh, I'm on my computer getting songs."  Sorry, but real people go out in the real world to real stores to purchase real mediums that contain real music.

That's why I only listen to music on cassette purchased at mall record stores.

2013-12-12 12:20:57 PM
What's the big deal?  I still listen to Led Zeppelin's catalog the way I always have: by tuning an FM radio to the classic rock station and waiting ten minutes.

2013-12-12 12:43:51 PM
This is why i still avoid any streaming service, music, movies, or otherwise. Too many walled gardens that require signing up for multiple services if you want all the content you are looking for.

I'm still waiting for them to fix the ad/algorithm that has Chomp Chomp Attack! songs breaking in to my mid-afternoon all-baroque reverie station.

So had no one ever heard of youtube before this?

Also, I wish *more* people would use the "spotify gets the led out!" headline. I haven't heard any media outlet use that line since this news launched.

Also, this news launched yesterday, way to be on the ball there, Fark.com. What's that? More snark about newspapers being outdated? More radio snobbery? Oh sorry, I guess Fark falls into that "just right amount of behind the times"-ness.

Well to be fair there are people who pay $5/month for no content.

Yeah, Napster was awesome. Admittedly, we were effectively stealing. But man it was awesome.

Happens every time I get nostalgic and look for Bob Seger.

The primary difference is that Pandora thinks they know best as to what you should or shouldn't be listening to.

I've found that Pandora does know me pretty well, but if I give a thumbs down Pandora knows to take a hint. Pandora knew that all I wanted to listen to was women singing folk and it obliged me after a little tinkering of Neko Case radio.

Pandora doesn't think independent musicians are real musicians and think you only want to hear the 3rd movement of symphonies.

With the Neko Case channel it's real easy to slide into country if you thumbs up the wrong thing.   But I do like some of Neko Case' more country sounding songs, but didn't want to go any further than that.

I'm too old and out of touch to care what a Spotify is, but not so old and out of touch to care about Led Zeppelin.

How does this benefit me?

Copying. To steal, you have to deprive someone of it.

That doesn't make it any less legal, just wanted to clarify that common misconception.

Meh, I prefer live music. Also, the only music I've purchased in the last year has been by giving the artist themselves the money for it. In person.

Yes, pandora's catalogue of indie stuff is thin at best. Also, it thinks you want to hear Israel Kawakwiwo on Every. Single. Station!

So what is the iTunes/Spotify/Pandora equivalent of "turn it uuuuup... and RIP THE KNOB OFF"?

I guess not being able to listen to them on "The Eagle" 20 times a day is not enough.

Alas, our is the Van Halen variety. Some Led Zep gets played, but you are guaranteed at least 1 VH song per every half hour.

Reel to reel, baby, and amp it through a McIntosh.
