(Yahoo)   Computer tablets are the top Xmas gift for 2013. Apparently parents want something around to occupy their kids' spare time between playing video games and watching TV   ( ) divider line

Lord Dimwit: So yeah, any other farkers with toddlers with tablets? Any suggestions?

Get one that can withstand being dropped, being lost, being stepped on and being drowned in chocolate milk.

Someday they'll realize why mommy and daddy let them have the tablets to play Angry Birds and watch Netflix on weekend afternoons - because we needed "nap time"

/Hope they have insurance that covers a good therapist.

I have zero use for one, but it makes sense that tablets sell so well.   Most end users don't really need what even a decent laptop can deliver.   Significant storage space isn't a requirement, as consumers seem completely happy not actually owning any of the content they view or hear.

Doc Daneeka: I want to get a new desktop with a big display and a mechanical keyboard.

All are readily available.

And as always, building your own rig is the best option by a country mile.

ModernPrimitive01: really sucks for me. I run an amateur recording studio out of my house and needed a new desktop. I spent Thanksgiving weekend waiting for online sales but the major sales were really on tablets. I guess retailers realize people that need desktop computers need them for a purpose and will buy them regardless

See above.  If you aren't going Mac for a DAW setup, diy is what you want to do.   Companies that sell turnkey daw systems also charge quite the premium for them.

/just about ready to pull the trigger on a new build myself.
//just cannot decide on which monitor to buy (or if I should just play the waiting game)

frepnog: gingerjet: You don't need Windows or the bloatware that is sold for it.

let me guess - this is also the year of the linux desktop, right?

fact is, yes, millions of people need windows, and millions will continue to need windows, because most software is written for windows.

stupid android "apps" are no replacement for a full install of windows running desktop applications.

/funny, linux people never saw android coming.  there will NEVER be a day of the linux desktop.

There's a reason Microsoft doesn't devote any real effort to stopping people in the Third World from stealing their operating systems.
Or anybody, actually.
As a tacit matter, it makes Windows affordable to those who can't afford it, and ensures that everybody has it.
Yes, Linux is free.
But so is stolen Windows.

Or if you have the disposable income, go iPad. The selection of apps for learning is outstanding.

/Nephew started at 2 and is now 6
//Leaps beyond the other kids his age in everything except reading
///My theory is that with the iPad, all of the information was so easily accessed visually and audially, that his brain didn't feel the need to learn to read
//Slashie abuse
/He finally caught the reading bug in the past year
