I think that Northampton, Massachusetts might take some exception to this...

Meh, Brooklyn can't hold a candle to the "lesbian capital of the south"; Beaverlick, KY

Northampton might have highest percentage, but Brooklyn is bigger.

Now where does the lesbian capital of the northeast fall in terms of the lesbian capital of the U.S. or the world?

The thing I noticed about Northampton was, lesbians talked about wanting to visit it or move there. They made it seem like a lesbian Mecca.

NoHo has Smith and Mount Holyoke, and more restaurants per capita than anywhere else in the US, plus it has Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore, more folk singers than you can shake a stick at, and Susan Powter broke up B*tch and Animal, and moved Animal into her Pioneer Valley home and made her Susan's house girl. LUGs populate the town thanks to Smith, and if you want to see what life in the Happy Valley approximates, you can check out Jeph Jacques' Questionable Content, which takes place right in NoHo, and if you have lived in town, you can recognize location after location after location in the strips. Yes, NoHo has Coffee of Doom, albeit spread out over a few locations, and without metallic dinosaur themed espresso machines...

I love lesbians more than anyone
So why don't lesbians love me?
I want lesbians, each and every one
So why don't lesbians want me?
It turns me on the way
They all wear sexy lingerie
And string bikinis everywhere they go
But they don't let me watch
As they explore each other's crotch
The way they do on video
Oh, I love lesbians more than anyone
So why don't lesbians love me?
And I want lesbians, each and every one
So why don't lesbians want me?
It's strange that anyone
Would wonder why a lesbian
Will always be a great athlete
There ain't no mystery
At least as far as I can see
'Cause what they are is what they eat
Yeah, I love lesbians more than anyone
So why don't lesbians love me?
Some of them are vampires
And some of them teach gym
Some are topless dancers
But all of them are slim
Some are into leather
And some write poetry
They make love together
Just to fuel my fantasy
'Cause I love lesbians more than anyone
So why don't lesbians
Why don't lesbians
Why don't lesbians love me?
Why don't lesbians love me?
Why don't lesbians love me?

Back in ...2006?  I think it was 2006.  Anyway, there was a gay-oriented website that had a bunch of demographic data on it, listing the 'gayest' places in the US.  It had statistics based on sheer # of gay people, and per-capita info.  Aroostook County, ME, for some reason, was #1 in the US for lesbians (by county, per capita).  So.  We had that going for us.  Which is nice.

I'm pretty sure that's Nashua, NH.

How's that then, sweaty?

Precisely.

Regardless, it's obvious that the number of lesbians per capita has an effect on all types of crime.  More lesbians = less crime.

I doubt that. Monowi, Nebraska has one restaurant per resident.

It has one resident, and one restaurant.

I know I'm going to be in the minority here, but I just don't think that lesbians should get their own capital. After all of the "gender equality" this and "accept me as I am" that they should have to put up with the exact same political crap the rest of us deal with.

2013-12-12 10:10:51 AM
Remember, folks, that capitals are not always the biggest places. They are the seats of power, where policy, decisions, and laws are made, and where the leaders reside. They are not necessarily the cities with the most people.

Therefore, based on my criteria and research, the Lesbian Capital of the Northeast is the Diesel Coffeeshop in Davis Square, Somerville, MA, where the Cabal of Lesbian Intelligentsia and Thinkers hold their secret meetings to set Sapphic policy.

This is Aroostook County, ME:

Considering the population density in Maine north of Portland, one lesbian moving up there could skew
things mightily on a per capita basis.

In all seriousness, is bragging about the total number of lesbians your jurisdiction has a good thing?  I can see if you use that as evidence in your larger point that clearly your area is welcoming.  But just to say its awesome we have such a large population?  So?

I wonder if people even realize that when they declare themselves the "capital of whatever" they're comparing the significance of the whatever to the midwestern hobby bullshiat like the largest ball of string and so on.

I mean, I can 100% tell you it's farkin' silly, but it's so ridiculous I have no idea whether it's actually offensive or not.

I've always wondered what attracts gays to the ends of peninsulas and archipelagos.  P-Town, Key West, Fire Island, San Francisco.

At one point, we had 4 lesbians working here, out of a total of 60 people.  And I'm not just "guessing" they were lesbians.  They were out.  I've never worked anyplace else like it.  Granted, this is strictly anecdotal.  And, yes, none of them were lipstick.

DjangoStonereaver: Considering the population density in Maine north of Portland, one lesbian moving up there could skew

Yep.  IIRC, "The County" has only about 120k people (if that).  So, when I had read that statistical back in 2006, I was thinking the exact same thing you just posted.

We're also the meth capitol of Maine (again, per capita).  How awesome is that!?!??

/hey, even if it's a pittance, we have to have SOMETHING to be proud of
