There's a serious dearth of information here. How could she not have known which country she was born in; or if she knew she wasn't born in the US, how could she not know how she got here? Obviously her brother knew since he went and applied for a visa to come to the US. Was he some long-lost brother she didn't know she had?

C) She's a lying sack of shiat and should be punted back over the border

Honestly, it's pretty scary that she didn't get an extensive enough background check before being made a police officer.

It's like saying that everyone needs to drive so we should give everyone a license. No. The government does it on a case basis. I think too many Americans are too lax about illegals.

The current system needs an overhaul. Immigration is mostly a good thing. Letting people walk in and do as they please is just stupid.

They're gonna have to double-check the backgrounds of allllll police officers now, and it's going to be hilarious how many they find and boot, and how terribly bad it's all going to look.

I'm still pissed they renamed Squaw Peak.

According to a (more in-depth) article elsewhere, apparently her brother was in the US military; he only got pinged when he applied for a passport with the state department, and as part of his background check the feds found out about the sister as well.  Figueroa herself reportedly didn't get at the whole truth until "a confrontation with her mother," according to a Department of Public Safety spokesman.

Could be BS, I suppose, but at this point all signs seem to indicate that mom lied and the kids found out later the hard way, by pure chance.

I guess it's possible.  I don't remember the first house I lived in.  I barely remember the 2nd.  It doesn't seem so controversial to let her stay though.  If Obama's Uncle can stay after getting a DUI, she should probably be allowed to stay too after growing up and working a respectable job for 13 years.

Okay, here's where y'all say working as a cop isn't a respectable job.

I remember John McCains speech regarding illegals, to "fasttrack them to citizenship, by paying a fine a applying for citizenship, but proponents say illegals don't make enough, so in essence get a free pass. Survey says no to that, make them pay, otherwise...

Yeah, that was a bullshiat move.  A bunch of people suffering from white guilt got together and decided "squaw" was an offensive term so they found the first Indian (yeah, Indian) they could find to rename it.

I have nothing against Piestawa, but I wonder how she would feel about that whole bullshiat.

"Submitted for your approval, a Miss Carmen Figueroa, former Arizona police officer and spokeswoman for the Department of Public Safety. Dutiful servant of reprehensible politicians who used her as a mouthpiece for bigotry. A Latina face telling her own kind they were not welcomed. She swore an oath to uphold the law and instead the law held her up for public sacrifice. A long history of service rendered irrelevant with a single glance in a mirror.

Miss Figueroa, formerly of Arizona, now handcuffed on a bus being deported to... the Tea Party Zone."

Sometimes, when people immigrate at a very young age (say, under 2), their parents tell them they were born here, and they don't know any better to question it, at least until a circimstsnce arises where they need to prove citizenship, which might be as late as their first 'real' job after college. There was an article on fark about a girl who found out her family was illegal when she went on a spring break trip. Obama's Dream Act was modeled off an MIT undergraduate student who discovered it right before graduating.

Could be truth that she didn't know.

I had a friend in high school who'd grown up her whole life in the same town, got her driver's license, all that good stuff - and then when she applied for a passport when we graduated HS, her mom kept giving her the runaround about getting her birth certificate. She finally pinned her mom down - turns out the man she'd grown up knowing as her father wasn't her birth dad, and birth dad - also an American - decided to drag her mom up to Canada for unexplained reasons right before my friend was born. She was technically a Canadian citizen, but had no luck at all finding any record of her birth there. She didn't formally 'exist' to either country, and the US wanted nothing to do with her because of it, despite the fact that her mom is a citizen. It took fifteen years to jump through all the hoops to finally get her US citizenship and a passport. It was nuts.

Probably wouldn't work now, but before everything went full digital and required hard-and-fast ID? I could see someone coming of age twenty or so years ago and going about their life not knowing they weren't a citizen, until something like this came up. If my friend didn't want or have need to travel, she still wouldn't know.
