Danger Avoid Death: gfid: Putting up free news sites seems like an unsustainable model to me. A few years ago one of the newspapers near me had to close up shop. Others have been snapped up by conglomerates and try to make you pay by limiting how many articles you can read each month, but they aren't very good at it.

The LA Times tries to limit how many articles you can read each month, but if you just delete your cookies you can get unlimited access. It's a laughably easy limitation to get around, so far. I suspect other newspaper sites are the same way. If a lunkhead like me can so easily circumvent their "limitations", I don't see why anyone would pay $5/week to subscribe.

Yeah, my local paper does the same thing.  I rarely read more than their limit, but it's laughably easy to get around.  I figure they're just going for the low-hanging fruit at this point.

Fallout Boy: All I can say is that a long time ago the mods have figured out that there is a sizeable contingent of cop haters on Fark due to the huge amounts of comments these threads get, and so stories of cop abuse gets disproportionally green

There are VERY F*CKING FEW places on the internet where these kinds of stories actually make any sort of front page. A cop can MURDER A CHILD sleeping on a couch because his dumb ass served a no-knock warrant, and it doesn't become the leading story on CNN.

Methinks you're complaining about the wrong f*cking thing, myself. Frankly, our nation DESERVES to hear about the bastards who we worship as if they're Gods amongst men.

It really should come outta their pensions when cops screw up. First the offending officer's, the the department's, then the city's, then the state's. Then, when every single cop in the whole state has 0 pension left, then maybe, MAYBE taxpayer money might be used for damages, but prolly not. That would be one big lawsuit.

Incidentally, this video is farked up. I don't care if he said the cop's mom raped a goat with her cervix, a large man threw a prone individual's head against a f*cking concrete wall.

If a civilian did that, some places in this country would be throwing attempted murder charges out there in order to force a plea agreement (and because a guy that size SHOULD BE CHARGED WITH F*CKING ATTEMPTED MURDER WHEN HE SLAMS THE SIDE OF A PRONE SMALL MAN'S HEAD INTO A F*CKING WALL).

I'm sorry - if you watch the video - go to the part right before the cops slam his head into the wall.....that noise....it is NOT a clearing of a throat.  No way.  Play it back a few times.  Close your eyes.  It's pretty obvious what it is.  Right at 35 seconds.  That's a spit.

You've got a guy in custody.  He's clearly under the influence of some drug (probably alcohol).
And he did spit.

Spitting, aside from being gross, is actually a little dangerous.  Was he being mistreated before hand?  I don't see any evidence of it.
Was he being mistreated after he was masked?  Nope.
He was even given medical care.

Personally, I don't see a problem here.  While he posed a threat, he was treated with hostility.

Ehh I think they are both good for weird or upsetting news sources, but that's it. Add on the borderline-NSFW ads/links they have (I farking hate that "Does this peach look like a vagina? Then you're a perv!" popup on OV) and they can go fark themselves. We need to click the source (because there's ALWAYS a source) and submit that. I got a saying about the police that I go by that describes them all.

The police are not your friends. They do not protect and serve any more. They are out to arrest you and throw you in jail for any reason they can find. Good or bad cops, their job is make sure you are in hand cuffs and in the back of their cars if you ever run into them.

To a certain point, I agree with you.  I think knowing that a caning was a risk might stop some people from doing whatever stupid shiat they are considering.

However, corporal punishment should be punishment given after a trial, and it needs to be a  controlled situation.  If it's just "The cops get to beat people up when they feel like", then it's a bad plan

.

Fark_Guy_Rob: Personally, I don't see a problem here. While he posed a threat, he was treated with hostility.

Even if he had outright spit on the cop, which didn't happen, the cops don't get to just beat the crap out of the guy.  That's not how it works, and only an asshole would think that's how it should be.

So continue to lie to yourself about these "good cops" because these same "good cops" protect, defend and justify the behavior of those "few" bad apples. OK. Just watched the video. I honestly don't care whether or not the cop gets charged, because we have accepted this sort of cop/thug behavior, and charging him will not influence any of his buddies.

What should happen, is that Lip Hair Blower needs to have a very comfortable lifestyle for all of his days, and douche cop needs to master his BJ technique.

It doesn't seem so rare.

How would you suggest taking power away from the assholes?

1. Someone above suggested civil suits have to come out of the pension fund. That would be one way. I remember when Rodney King got his settlement, and everyone was cheering F*CK YEAH! SHOW THOSE COPS!! except it didn't: It came out of the city of L.A.'s  account, which meant the taxpayers of the City, which meant everyone cheering F*CK YEAH SHOW THOSE COPS.

2. Hold the D.A.'s office accountable for investigating dirty/abusive cops. They are the ones who have to follow up on citizen's complaints and they are the ones who decide whether or not to charge those cops with crimes. Every time these threads come up and people shriek about bad cops not getting charged, guess what: It's not the cops' job to do anything but put them on leave. It's the District Attorney's. I've yet to see ANYONE hold them to account for not doing THEIR jobs.

3. Stop requiring police to do contradictory work. Nearly everyone expects police to: a) arrest bad guys, b) immediately, c) without error, d) without mercy; and at the same time i) arrest the RIGHT bad guys, ii) without hurting them, iii) without hurting anyone else, iv) without inconveniencing anyone else. One reason police went to Tas ...

You have a lot of good ideas. I suspect we'll opt for pretending like these "victims" deserve it.

It also runs the other way.

People who do too well on the department tests actually get excluded (there have been lawsuits from high scorers who were disallowed that ended with the police department winning by saying they didn't want people who were too smart).

People who appear to be too earnest fail the interview because they are not what the department is looking for.  The interviewer is looking for people like himself.  Therefore the bully mentality gets perpetuated.

I shudder to think how much police brutality happened before there were cameras everywhere.

Which makes the cops who still do it look awfully stupid.

I suspect there wasn't much going through this cop's mind except rage at the exact moment he smashed the guy's head into the wall. It was an impulsive act by a person who has a dangerous lack of self control. The fact that he was on candid camera I'm sure never even entered his thuggish little noggin. At least not until he spent his horrifying 13 minutes on the other side of the bars.

The cops who lied for him, though, they're a different story. They were not involved in the immediate event, and they had time to come down from whatever oh f*ck adrenaline rush they did have before they had to fill out their reports. They deliberately and intentionally lied, knowing that the truth was on camera. With audio, so they couldn't even claim that he threatened them verbally. Were they counting on the recording having a convenient little accident? That's the only explanation that makes sense.
