you are a puppet: No idea who this is and the link won't open for me, so I'll never know

Short version: a person who wrote about her experiences with poverty admitted that she wasn't born a long-suffering Dickensian stereotype and fell into poverty later, so the usual dickbags who turn up to this kind of thing decided that she couldn't possibly have ever been poor. Then, the Evil Liberal Media Which Isn't Run By Conservative Money Men At All We Promise decided she is a hoax, which is the story they've been pushing ever since. The reality being that she was upfront about all of this and nothing she said was false, so it's just the Calvinist scum trying to control the narrative about poverty in this country as usual.

I remember reading her original article, where she talks about smoking even though she couldn't afford it, because a small pleasure was obtainable, and other things, like a down payment, were astronomically far off.

I thought that sounded stupid at first, then I realized the middle class do the same thing at a different level - taking a family vacation rather than maxing out their RRSPs because there's no way they'll ever afford retirement, but they might as well get some pleasure out of life first.

If you accept that a few bad decisions and some shiatty luck can trap you in poverty, then you also have to accept that maybe not being poor means you randomly zigged where somebody else zagged, or vice versa, and maybe you had a few lucky breaks. Maybe you're only a step ahead in line because somebody tripped, not because you're special and a genius and a harder worker, or God wants you ti be prosperous, or you deserve it and they don't. It's like insisting at all costs that the Bible is innerant because if not, then half the justification for your selfish, shiatty world view goes out the window.

More often than not your success is utterly independent of someone else's failure. There is a pervasive misunderstanding that for someone to succeed, someone else must fail.

Guess it depends if they are in direct competition.

I'd say plenty of managerial and C level types stepped on other's backs to get there. That would be everyone else losing for them to win.

I've made some very stupid decisions before. I'm not likely to make them again, but I'm still pretty much screwed over because of them, 7 years later. The key is learning from your mistakes, and showing awareness of what led up to it. In my case, it was moving out with some people long before I was ready in terms of finance and maturity, of buying a car with a larger payment than I should have gotten with only a tradein, and the last thing that screwed me over was losing my license for not paying a fixit ticket.

If it was the same mistake over and over, then you may have a point. If they were different mistakes, then you don't.

/Either way, you missed her point.

I guess you'd be one of the ones who would excoriate her if she were still on food stamps and tell her she ought to be more bootstrappy and self-reliant, amirite? Because bailing out people who make stupid mistakes is a waste of time?

It's not like a few stupid mistakes can't be rectified if the person realizes they made them and tries to correct them. It's when the person says "it wasn't my fault, 'they' did this to me," or something like that, that you've got a problem. And I'm not seeing that here.

It's also a lot of luck and who you know. But that hurts the narrative of "exceptionalism," so it gets massively downplayed in all media, reality-based and fictional alike.

Uh... for the vast majority of jobs out there? Yeah, someone has to fail. Most jobs have more than 1 person trying for it, and pretty much by definition that means at least 1 person is going to fail in getting that job.  Maybe once you get INTO the job success depends more on your own ability than on someone else failing, but simply getting into the position in the first place normally requires failure. You can't have success in a job if you don't have that job to begin with.

Wasteland: So why should I hire you, instead of someone with the same qualifications and experience

I didn't say you should, or that you can't hire us both, but even if only one of us lands THIS job, there is no reason to assume that the other is doomed to failure in their life, that they may not find a better job at the next company, or that in the long run, they may do better. And at that point, their ultimate success will not have been at the expense of my failure. Because I got the job.

I am speaking of success on the long arc of employment, not in terms of this years UPS and downs.

Wait, what? You're arguing that, unless the rest of one person's life is mired in failure, then "someone to succeed, someone else must fail " is false? Damn, your powers of "reasoning" are astounding.
