I thought it was common practice to make sure a lady was safely inside before leaving, regardless of the situation.

In a statement, university officials encouraged students to contact campus health services for counseling. They urged caution in the extreme cold by traveling in groups, checking in with others and dressing in layers.

Not getting stupid drunk on tequila would also be good advice, but strangely absent.

As authorities looked for blankets to cover Lommel while awaiting an ambulance, police found her wallet and keys and noticed tracks from her boots in the snow around the house. The tracks wound to a garage, around a parked car and a deck in back. Some tracks were "up near the house as if to use the house as a crutch to hold onto. They then had impressions as if the person was falling down, getting back up and crawled around the southwest corner facing Woodland Avenue," the police report said.

Wow. I can't remember the last time I got that drunk.

BECAUSE I WAS farkING REALLY DRUNK!!!

About 10:30, she and a roommate got a ride to a friend's house, where they played a drinking game with cards called "ride the bus." Lommel lost several rounds and had to take a shiat-ton of shots.

Fixed for them... unless the rules have changed.  I'm assuming "ride the bus" is the same as "bus driver?"

It is.  I said college town for extra emphasis for the extra potential danger (e.g. drunken asshole rapist fratboys).   But that is the basic point.  If you drop a girl off you make SURE she gets in the door.

i make sure anyone I drop off gets in safe.  and that's not for fear of drunk college kids... more a fear of robbery, home invasion, and all the other stuff that can happen on the walk from car to door.  and, my friends do the same for me.

I knew a guy at PSU who decided to take a nap in a Wal-Mart parking lot under an overturned shopping cart while it was snowing.  Plenty of ways to die from that, but luckily for him, his friends stumbled upon him and took him home.

Terrible diagnosis for the young woman, but she has to bear the brunt of the responsibility for what happened, though her friends are partly to blame.

College student Alyssa Jo Lommel apparently had survived outside overnight in temperatures that dipped to 17 below early Saturday morning near the University of Minnesota Duluth campus, police said. She wore UGG boots, jeans, a sweater and a medium-weight jacket.

Never mind that she might lose her hands and/or feet, I'm genuinely impressed she's alive. You could get yourself into life-threatening trouble with your core temperature under those circumstances even if you were alert, sober, and mobile. Considering that alcohol depresses your CNS while opening up your capillaries (thus wasting more heat), I think she rolled a natural 20 just to be breathing now.

CSB time, slothb77 version

ski trip to vail, co (el. about 8,100 feet) in january.  I was living at sea level at the time (still do) and I wasn't acclimated to elevation.  Free beer on the party bus from Denver to Vail.  Once at Vail i checked into my lodge, then took the shuttle bus to the base village bars.  At that point it only took me 2 or 3 beers to be in pretty bad shape.

Went to the bus stop for the shuttle bus back to my lodge.  Like 1am mountain time after a long day of travel that started with a 6am EST wake up.  Temps were in the negative single digits.  I fell asleep in a snowbank at the bus stop.  Luckily some other people getting on the same bus saw me and woke me up and got me on the bus.  As a skier, I was wearing a lot of gear to keep me warm.  But january nights outside in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado are no joke.

Hell, I'm female, but when I drop anyone off especially at night, I just wait the few seconds it takes to make sure they get safely in their house/building.

That's just what you're supposed to do.

No, you're supposed to walk them to the door and just as they open it, hit 'em with the chloroform soaked rag. Be sure not to let them see the rag before this though, that is important.

Plus bread doesn't "soak the alcohol up"; if anything it just converts to sugars and adds to the problem. If you've got to drink hard, proteins are the best food to eat before going to party town.
