Dont go on that show if you dont want to get asked questions like that.

2013-12-11 12:12:44 PM
TELL US, HOW DOES IT FEEL TO HAVE YOUR GUEST WALK OFF DURING YOUR QUESTIONS?
WHAT WAS YOUR INITIAL REACTION?
WHAT DID THAT FACE MEAN?
DO YOU HAVE ANY WORDS FOR OTHER HOSTS WHO MAY HAVE SUFFERED THE SAME AS YOU?

2013-12-11 12:17:03 PM
Nah.  This is an example of a former NFL player showing the proper technique for dealing with anything:

espn could be a great network if they would only just fire all of their current employees...into the center of the sun

2013-12-11 12:19:44 PM
They didn't even get a chance to ask about his use of PEDs.

2013-12-11 12:24:31 PM
What was the alleged point of the interview in the first place?  God, ESPN is such a colossal waste of time.

In a remake of "Mister Smith Goes to Washington", Stephen Colbert's "Better Know a Senator" ends with a bloody nose and broken glasses.

I'm thinking more athletes should start doing this so the network starts taking the hint. I mean, seriously...I hope a producer got chewed out this week at the very least.

/I'm not as naive to think this will involve any talking head firings.

This. That's how Highly Questionable is and those are the kind of questions they ask. When people are open and have a sense of humor about things, it makes for very entertaining television. If Merriman couldn't talk about certain things for legal reasons, that's understandable, but know what show you're going on.

You lost 2 houses to fires growing up. Did that suck? How bad did it suck? Could you walk us through that moment when you got homes to embers? Do you think fires should be outlawed?

Hard-hitting journalism here. Merriman just couldn't take the heat.

Seriously though that was sideline reporting levels of shiat interviewing.

2013-12-11 12:39:12 PM
That looked more like a producer fark up to me. There was clearly someone in his earpiece telling him that the interview was over.

He was there to promote his charity................that helps the homeless.

I don't know, but I also can't think of a potential point or any value to extract from talking with Shawne Merriman, either. "So when did you start taking PEDs and why did you date Tila Tequila?" are the only two possible questions I can think of, and I don't even care about the answer for either one.

What if the question was phrased like this:

Did you and Tila Tequila ever have a threesome or moresome with some of the skanky but hot women who were on her dating show?

Now are you interested in the answer?

BATMANATEE: That looked more like a producer fark up to me. There was clearly someone in his earpiece telling him that the interview was over.

Definitely how it looked to me. Unless, maybe, the follow-up was bound to be, "Was the house fire what turned you to steroids?"

I have never, ever heard a sports reporter ask an intelligent question.  It's not what they do.

I'm not here to talk about house fires. Today's about honoring Qualcomm.

2013-12-11 01:10:10 PM
I remember the golden days when ESPN broadcast sports, instead of arguing about them.

2013-12-11 01:11:13 PM
The real WTF was the complete ineptitude of the two hosts, just sitting there dumbstruck. No professional broadcast journalist would allow that much dead air. Ever.

The only explanation for the way that went down, though, is that Merriman specified beforehand that he was not going to talk about his childhood or the time he spent in a shelter, and when he realized they weren't going to honor the agreement, he politely got up and left. I'd do the same in his position -- either that or sit silently, and let them stew.

This Looks Fun: Gunny Highway: He was there to promote his charity................that helps the homeless.

Huh. Well, then... answer those farking questions!

Yeah.  Those are actually softball questions.

"How did it feel to live in a shelter for 12 months"

"The people were very caring, and it was crowded, but the worst part was the feeling of impermanence. No matter how good the shelter is, no kid is ever going to call it 'home'.  That's why my charity, The Merrimen Housing Empowerment for People Project, works with local and state agencies, mortgage companies, and blah de blah to help transition families into yadda yadda within 4 months without wibbley-wobbley hullabaloo abra-ca-pocus"

2013-12-11 01:16:01 PM
ESPN has gotten the FOX method of questioning down pat: invite someone on to talk about a specific subject, and then spend your time lambasting the sucker on every other topic.  That's what got Richard Sherman so worked up about Bayliss ... he was there, supposedly, to talk about his charity.

2013-12-11 01:16:08 PM
While he walked away, did he turn the ... Lights out?

FOX is hardly the pioneer of that (or anything else really).  That shiat's been going on forever.  You may want to check out the "bj's and lolcats" thread on the main page.

Meanwhile, in Chicago:

Sports media: Huge qb controversy for the Bears!
Bears: Cutler is our starting qb.
Sports media: So who is going to be the starting qb when Cutler is healthy?
Bears: Cutler is our starting qb.
Sports media: The controversy continues over the Bears starting qb!
Bears coach: Cutler is our starting qb.
Sports media: What are the Bears going to do? This controversy could rip apart the locker room!
McCown: Cutler is our starting qb.
Sports media: The controversy continues unchallenged through the Bears organization! What will they do?
Everyone in the Bears organization: Cutler is our starting qb.
Sports media: We will continue to monitor this crazy situation as it progresses! Insanity! What will the Bears do?
Bears: Eat shiat.

That noise seems to have tapered off, they've moved on to "will the Bears resign Cutler next year?"
That din will be unbearable by February.

That was the most polite "later, suckers" I've ever seen. The hosts' reactions gave me real life LOLs.

What, Lebatard's dad wasn't available to finish out the show?

I will agree with Woody and Ditka but Mr. Wilbon is a perfect example of an old man with an onion on his belt yelling at clouds to get off his lawn.

I'm reminded of the great Bill Curry's comment on the status of his profession: "Sports broadcasting is the sandbox of journalism."

That's what I was thinking. But hey, don't wanna let that get in the way of trying someone trying to stir up controversy where there is none.

As true as that is you can't deny that Mike is just as ornery as Tony. A good drinking game to help pregame for MNF is to drink every time either one of them is offended disgusted, or outraged at something.

DNRTFA, but did they call him Chris?

I would have gone with: "Remember that time that MJD put you flat on your ass? That was pretty sweet."

BATMANATEE: That looked more like a producer fark up to me. There was clearly someone in his earpiece telling him that the interview was over.

Yeah, but why would he be taking his earpiece out when he knew he was still on camera- before he said good bye?

2013-12-11 05:02:46 PM
I watch Highly Questionable every day and there was nothing wrong with the questions. Lebatard was setting up the fact that Merriman has a charity that he CAME ON THIS SHOW TO PROMOTE involving the less fortunate kids who need winter coats. It was obvious Dan was steering the interview toward the charity.
He also asks a lot of questions that never make it to air. After the interview they edit out for time and to get the most interesting interview.
If Dan wanted to be icehole he could have hammered on the PED history, but he didn't (only two questions and moved on to the unfortunate childhood).

Dogfacedgod: ESPN blows asshole and sucks the taint

Yes, but this is the bottom of the bottom of the barrel with Dan Lebatard and Bomani Jones.  Even Jemele Hill and Michael Smith are a step up from that...and Steven A. Smith and Skip Bayless are at least three steps up from Hill and Smith.
