Robert Mugabe also spoke at the service. And he got a warm applause from the crowd.

Probably went to get his daddy, to translate.

So he went to the speech just to walk out? That's some damn fine attention whoring there, Lou.

Which is the greater threat to American society... Castro's regime or the political policies of Ted Cruz?

I think we have an embargo on the wrong party.

Um, everyone understands that Raul Castro is NOT Fidel Castro. right? While he has held some senior positions in the Cuban government, Cruz' statements make it sound like he thinks Raul has been the leader the whole time.

BMFPitt: So he went to the speech just to walk out? That's some damn fine attention whoring there, Lou.

I believe the total count of speech givers was somewhere around 5,000 and he walked out on one.

/5,000 is slightly off a bit

For someone with Cuban heritage...I don't really have a problem with him leaving. I mean, he did use it to score political points and make a show of it by releasing it like this, but it isn't the worst thing in the world.

I don't think this is a stand people can knock him for.

That's what I was thinking. However Raul was head of the armed forces in Cuba for like fifty years.

I don't know enough about Cuban politics to say who was in charge of torturing political dissidents.

Let no one say that Ted Cruz does not understand empty gestures.

They can't knock him for empty, transparent self-aggrandizing gestures of no value whatsoever?

I would think using the funeral of a man much greater than he could ever be just so he can score political points with people who are already going to vote for him is a stand I can very well knock him for.

2013-12-11 10:13:59 AM
Well, guess Sen. Cruz won't be getting Raul's vote, now...

/that'll show him!

Unfortunate timing, though; this would have been a great addition to the Ted Cruz coloring book.

He was the head of the armed forces from 1959 to 2008. Yes, he is not Fidel. However, it's not like Fidel did everything by himself over the past 50 years.

I wouldn't be surprised if the head of the armed forces in a communist dictatorship had political prisoners and/or tortured innocent people.

We get it Cruz, Cuba had it so much better with Batista in power....

As I said, he was doing it just to score political points and it and it is kind of lame to make a show of it by releasing a statement. But, the guy is part cuban. I mean, come on.

There is no special interest group too small for the Republicans to suck up to. Especially not when the group is made up of land owners, lawyers, and doctors.

I'm sure Miami crowds will be impressed by this gesture when you're campaigning there in '16, Ted. They'll remember and everything. Super Effective.

Why, did he start reading Green Eggs And Ham?

2013-12-11 10:17:08 AM
Well, he's always been big on pointless, empty gestures, so it stands to reason...

2013-12-11 10:19:28 AM
You want to know why the regime in Cuba is the way it is? You need only look 90 miles to the north.  An embargo that has unfairly hurt the Cuban people, failed U.S. intervention with the Bay of Pigs invasion and countless attempts on Fidel Castro's life by the U.S. government.  I would be a little skeptical of the U.S. and anything it stated as well.   We created the "monster" that is Cuba.

2013-12-11 10:22:29 AM
Ted, you farking idiot. Quit pushing an embargo that has done jack doodly shiat for the last 50 years. Flood those farkers with the spoils of capitalism that they have been missing during that time. They'll dump their Castro brand rice cookers post haste.

I understand this, but all of the "outraged" people have been slapping the same label without mentioning the difference, I really think it's because they're too stupid to pay attention. I'm not denying that Raul may have had a hand in some bad shiat, but at this point, I don't think abyone is bothering to differentiate, they see a Castro associated with Cuba, and they run with it.

This.

I've had to endure some positively hated people at funerals over time.  Downright hated relatives or other people that under normal circumstances I wouldn't be able to be with in the same room.  But you know, you don't pick fights or make a farking scene at these things because it's an assholish thing to do.

Reminded of a song by Mike Cross:

I went to old Bills funeral
one of the multitude
They asked me if I would be kind enough to say a word or two
Well I did not want to tell a lie with anything I said
But how could I avoid it and not speak ill of the dead
So I started out by saying all of us have sinned
But each of us can only hope that god will understand
Bill made mistake through out his life
But now that it's all done
I am sure he has brought some happiness to each and everyone
Cause if heaven is pleased when sinners ceases to sin
and the Devil is pleased when another soul comes in
When the earth is glad to be rid of a knave
Then everybody is happy that Bill is in his grave
When he was just a little boy his sins were not all that great
He used to steal the money from the church collection plate
But I won't call him a shyster
who loved to cheat and steal
Though he did once burn his mother in a real estate deal
I won't call him cruel but he used to shave his cat
and he did once but a snake inside his grandma's favorite hat
He burned his brothers business and
ran off with his wife
he framed his sister with the crime
and sent her up for life
So for those of us that lived with Bill
and knew him all to well
let's take this opportunity to bid him fond farewell
and if old Bill is looking in
I know that he can see
Today he has made this troubled world a better place to be

I honestly do not believe him.

This was an international even, covered by hundreds if not a few thousand cameras.

I am, too, but my ancestors arrived in the colonies 300 years ago. I have a Cuban-American brother-in-law whose parents fled Cuba decades ago on a raft bound for Miami. Big difference.
