Actually, Palpatine created a Tea-Party-like culture of fear where valuable veterans were retired and replaced mid-action over slights, the incentive structure for helping along genuine progress was flawed, and the lynchpin of his strategy entailed exploiting "dark-side leanings" from a so-called moderate average joe (Luke) who had already thoroughly rejected the core of his party's platform despite his message-packaging efforts. Taken together, it helped drive his administration into the ground.

Wow, that's actually much more similar than I thought...

Not at all. Even the first Death Star had major cost overruns on its contract, and the second Death Star was kept completely off the books. Military spending, combined with deregulation of the spice trade, would have put the Empire into a major recession within ten years.
