It is a shame he died but what killed him was letting a friend drive his supercar like an ass on regular streets. If you want to drive your supercar like an ass go to a track where there are not curbs or trees to run into.

carolla also talked about the car, i think how noted professional race car driver Jay Leno spun his Carerra out 3 times at some race.

i thinkt he story Rogan told was this friend of his drove it at a track, but cut the session short and said afterwards that the car was too dangerous.  something like that.  dude was like, "nope, not me, fark that car, yo."

Walter Rohrl (Porsche test driver and one of the greatest Group B drivers ever) said during wet-weather testing of the Carerra GT that the car absolutely frightened him.

Again, a man who did this successfully for a living:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yyVHj3sHVHQ

said the Carerra GT scared him.

Oh please.

Those things are on highways all over America.

If they could really cause a fast moving car to hydroplane there would have been law suits over this years ago.

"We've learned the experts have told the family ... a car going speeds approaching 90 MPH will lose traction after hitting a series of Botts' Dots.  It's akin to driving on ice -- and  control is further compromised by the fact that the Porsche was outfitted with special racing tires that have very little tread."

Yes but what I have read was they weren't going 90 and that is just talking about normal cars, when you add in soft compound tires it makes it a lot worse.

But people who have never driven on soft compound tires will never understand that fact, mainly because they cost double than what regular tires cost and last less than half as long.

Call me crazy, but when you hit a lamp pole, take it down, and then hit a tree and the tree cuts your car in half and sticks out of the middle of it... I suspect you're going a tad more than 45 MPH

I blame the driver only because that person was a pro racer and should have known better, it's like Mario Andretti driving around LA like it's Need for Speed. You're gonna crash sooner or later.

You son made bad choices all along.

Just because you watch a movie about driving fast doesn't mean you can do it. And don't do it in a car that won't protect you from a crash. And don't drive that car in an environment that risks that kind of crash.

I was young and stupid. Now I'm just stupid. How I've lived this long, I'll never know.

You could always do what my town did. Build wide smooth 4-lane roads with a speed limit of 55 and then suddenly lower it to 45 and station cops at the speed limit change.

/the town also lowered several 45mph roads to 35mph and now they camp out there too

"a car going speeds approaching 90 MPH will lose traction after hitting a series of Botts' Dots "

And colliding with a tree is generally fatal in a car going at speeds approaching 90 MPH, but I still don't blame the tree.

Nobody deserves to die in a horrible car wreck, but some people sure don't try to make it so they don't.

Seequinn: What do those  accident reconstruction experts say about the speed the vehicle was moving at that allowed it to start hydoplaning in the first place?

I cannot wait for these reconstruction experts to explain how metal & plastic objects cause "hydroplaning." Sudden and unexpected loss of grip, especially so if you are using racing tires, maybe, but unless these also exude some form of liquid, this statement makes them sound dumb.

YetAnotherTacitus: I think these dots are not really speed bumps - just the reminders to keep you in your lane (although its hard to tell from the picture). Plus to quote from the article:

"a car going speeds approaching 90 MPH will lose traction after hitting a series of Botts' Dots "

I guess this "proves" the driver was driving in an unsafe manner.

Those dots are in Dallas too, as lane markers. Never knew what they were called and I lived there for 4 years.

They made getting over into another lane interesting, but I never took them at 90 mph.

I don't understand. If the driver wanted to drive stupidly/recklessly (and assuming Walker didn't encourage him), why didn't they just go rent a track* to turn the car loose? Why get stupid on surface streets?

*- or whatever famous/rich people do to drive cars at blistering speed

And yet here you are in a Paul Walker death thread.

He was a rich (albeit generous) guy who you didn't even know that was killed driving his car at insanely unsafe high speeds.

And apparently one of the few people left who aren't aware that he wasn't driving.

that's been repeated over and over on Fark, but I've yet to see a source for that. The 45 mph thing came from the speed limit sign, not the speed they were going.

Dwight_Yeast: They didn't put "speed bumps" in; they installed markers BETWEEN lanes which you can feel when you run over them at speed. They're there for distracted/sleepy drivers, and they do save lives.

Yes, which if they caused him a problem means he wasn't bothering with such a silly thing as keeping it in the lane.

Until this dude died I had never heard of him.  I don't understand mourning celebrities who cause their own fate, whether by specific choices that result in an early death, or lifestyle choices that made an early death inevitable.

The druggie from Glee
The Joker
Gun-eater Cobain
Tupac
Biggie
Whitney Houston
Michael Jackson
And any one of a hundred others.

Clutch2013: Whether the OEM tires would have helped or hurt the situation, well, won't ever be known.

Changing the tires from those suggested and developed by the MFG points to hubris in thinking that "I have raced 911s. I can handle this thing.  Put some racing tires on it."  I am not saying that the suggested tires would have made any difference.  I am saying that ignoring 10 years of tire development with input for drivers far more expert than this driver, says enough about the mentality of the driver.

Here's "The Stig" losing control of it and apparently did so several times:

You don't push that car unless you have plenty of runoff and margin for error and especially so if you don't have tons of seat time in it.

namegoeshere: So how much does one pay for a car that sucks this badly?

It's a driver's car.  When there is a fark up, the fault lies entirely with the driver.  The car far from sucks and is intended to engage every aspect of driving skill. The driver thought he didn't suck, and I am not saying he does, at driving 911s, that is.  I just don't think he had enough experience with this car, as shown by putting stickier tires on it and not keeping the MFG suggested tires on the car, and then did things he should not have done in that car, and I think it was overconfidence in skills from driving other cars that resulted in this death.

We had something similar to this in San Diego recently.

The parents of a young man killed in a crash actually said that if the road didn't have dips in it their boy would not have lost control while doing in excess of 100 miles per hour. I will admit to taking those dips at a speed slightly higher than the posted limit but that's only so I can watch my wife's boobs jiggle.
