Five weeks? Even in rats that ain't much.

No, I'm thin and wrinkly. Because I drink diet soda. So there.

Yes, it's not your fault because the diet soda makes you drink it.

Don't most people drink diet soda because they were fat to begin with?

/the chicken and the egg

No. No. No. And I crush diet soda. You can't explain that

2013-12-10 09:13:19 PM
Outside of the fat part, sounds like meth or crack. Why not just skip to those two and at least have a trim, fitting figure?

Diet soda is disgusting.

Club soda is seltzer with a bit of salt added. No sweetener either way.

I've lost weight (5 kgs, or 11 lbs) doing nothing but just switching to diet coke.

If you don't like the taste, try mixing it with Johny Walker and Martini. It worked for me.

2013-12-10 09:24:59 PM
Diet soda still triggers the body's insulin response, but then there's nothing (not even HFCS) for it to go to work on.

If nothing else, that would keep me away from diet soda (and the fact it tastes like shiat, but details- right?)

Ahh yes, the ever-present reference to the concept of, "How stupid do you have to be to get a diet soda with your burger and fries." The sage diet advice backed with all the intellectual rigor of Jerry Seinfeld.

But in reality, a large soda at, say, Jack in the Box has almost 500 calories. That's not a trifle, even compared to the rest of the meal. And most people garner far more satisfaction from 500 calories of burger or fries than from 500 calories of sugary soda. So for most people, substituting diet soda or forgoing soda altogether is a far more logical food choice than keeping the soda and foregoing the burger or fries - and yet almost the same benefit.

I know. I'm not gonna let coke steal my lifespan.

Seltzer is always the way to go. And if you need a little perk in taste, squirt some lemon, lime, whatever, in it.

Water - world's best diet beverage.

2013-12-10 09:33:36 PM
Seltzer's cheaper, doesn't have sweeteners, has plenty of carbonation, and makes a convenient mixer for those times where you need a bit of alcohol.

I'm not sure what's in that 10 calorie Dr.Pepper and Ginger Ale, but it's not that bad. If I get a taste for soda now, that's what I buy.

I guess this means overall- I should just drink more wine.

/that's still good for me right?

Out of all the things we do in the US to fark ourselves up, drinking soda is probably at the top now that most Americans don't smoke cigarettes.

Except they just came out with a huge review of a ton of studies and concluded that aspartame is safe and doesn't cause cancer.

I shouldn't stand up for soda because I absolutely never drink it and hate it. I drink water 80% of the time, coffee 15% of the time and beer 5% of the time. The perfect drink trifecta for healthiness.

/CITRIC ACID = vitamin C. So if you are concerned about oranges and peppers dissolving your teeth then I guess it is ok to be scared of citric acid. Sugar is much worse for your teeth than acid since sugar feeds acid producing bugs. I am half making this up but I think that is how it works.

Corn sugars in everything would seem the likely obesity culprit, no?

Some whole wheat bread has labeling on the packaging boasting that it is high fructose corn syrup free.

"We didn't sugar your bread fatty - feel proud!"

I knew when that crap came out that it was worse than the real soda.

IDK if my taste buds are weird or what but I have never tasted a single diet anything soda that didn't taste like chewing on a lead pipe. Do these taste good to other people? Sometimes they will have a somewhat sweet taste at first but then I always get the chemical aftertaste immediately.

The first study doesn't actually exist. The person with the hyphenated name isn't identified and isn't a scientist - probably some homeless person. And whomever says it "messes up the brain" has obviously had oodles of scientific training.

In other words, perfect fodder for those who believe in pseudoscience to base their entire lives upon.

FTFA- "Diet soda gave my daughter seizures and she began to go blind. Doctors told her to stop diet soda and her seizures stopped and her vision is now fine. It gives me serious optic migraines."

Sounds legit.

Most mainstream sodas are sweetened with Aspartame, which some people really don't like.  If you're willing to buy from smaller soda brands, you can get diet soda flavored with Sucralose (Splenda), Stevia, or other sweeteners that don't have the same Aspartame aftertaste.  Instead of zero calories like Aspartame flavored diet sodas, these tend to have 10-50 calories a serving.

Sounds about normal.  Most of folks I know that drink diet soda pretty much had to learn to like it.

Same for me. They taste awful. I drink maybe 5 or 6 sodas a year, if I am parched and it's all that's available. I can't take more than 2 sips of a diet soda, they taste so disgusting to me. We have a kick ass ice machine at work that makes snow cone quality ice. I fill a 24 oz glass of water up several times a day. I covet that ice machine.

Vitamin C is Ascorbic Acid.  It just happens to be in fruits that also have a high citric acid content.

ask any restaurant owner what the soda does to pvc pipes, it's nasty. diet and/or regular, is all bad.

Some health experts now believe the chemicals in the drink could actually be causing your body to lay down fat deposits around your middle - dubbed 'diet cola belly'...
