Are the complaining  republicans becoming anti-capitalism shills. US companies are losing millions of dollars by not being allowed to develop Cuba again.  Every country other than the US has been investing in Cuba, medical care and tourists  have become big business again 90 miles off the coast of the US. Similar to China which the US has no problem trading, China and Cuba are not even close to being a communist state but instead a military dictatorship, and military dictators are normally considered an ally of the US.

farking diplomacy. How does it work?

Not a single one of those photographs upset me. World leaders meet with other world leaders, and they are often awful people.

Didn't Reagan pretty much have a gangbang in the Oval Office with a bunch of dudes from the Taliban and then compare them to our founding fathers?

I also liked it when W made out with that Saudi dude in the Rose Garden.

Yeah, I would think that "be nice to other world leaders" would be the #1 item on the presidential job despcription, but I admit ignorance in such matters.

When in all the nations of the world, the rule of law is the darling of the leaders and the plague of the people, we ought to begin to recognize this. We have to transcend these national boundaries in our thinking. Nixon and Brezhnev have much more in common with one another than we have with Nixon. J. Edgar Hoover has far more in common with the head of the Soviet secret police than he has with us. It's the international dedication to law and order that binds the leaders of all countries in a comradely bond. That's why we are always surprised when they get together-they smile, they shake hands, they smoke cigars, they really like one another no matter what they say.

I would rather the President shake hands with anyone as a prelude to open communications rather than he bomb them for no good reason.

In short if you don't want a leader that's a diplomat go live in a despotic country and quit your biatching.

OH SNAP. Did they switch seats?!

And frankly if leads to ending the trade embargo I'm all for it. In fact when the President was first elected I thought "well this may be one good thing he'll do". With all the comparisons with JFK (young, popular) and with Teddy dead I thought that the President would have the ability to get the embargo removed. I'm not sure he even tried.

The is no way the Democrats are going to let a Republican end the only lasting policy of JFK.

Neither will because it puts Florida in play for the other side. If he were to do it, the Democrats will (at least has always been the theory) lose Florida in every election from now on. I think politics has swung enough that it's no longer the case, plus 2012 and probably 2014 will show that there's enough Democratic support nationwide that they could lose Florida and not sacrifice 2016.

JFK's embargo, plus our "you touch soil, you're a citizen" policy towards Cuban refugees has pretty much guaranteed that Cuba won't have open relations with the US for at least 50 years. Clinton kinda opened the door, Obama kinda opened it a bit more. Here's hoping this will open a dialogue. Hell, he's been batting a thousand on the foreign policy aspect of late. Why not add another notch to his belt.

The farking Castros would have been old news long ago if we had abandoned this ridiculous political stance on Cuba.  We've been unintentionally propping up the regime for decades.

Diogenes: Diplomatic behavior at a diplomatic event?  Has the world gone insane?

It's beyond a diplomatic event, it's a memorial service.  MOST people are capable of shelving just about anything/everything for a memorial or funeral.  They weren't hanging out at a bar doing shots together, they shook hands at a memorial service for a world leader.

As is always the case, there is literally NOTHING the President can do that someone won't complain about.  Surely, President Obama wasn't the only person present who shook his hand....

No!
One of these days we'll invade and throw out the illegal Castro regime and all those poor Cubans and their descendants in Miami will get to move back and have all the property that got stolen from them 60 years ago!  It's GOT to happen!  It's just GOT TO!

Surely the best way for Obama to honour Mandela was to fake out Castro and run his fingers through his hair at the last minute.

That's just Michelle... When I watched the Kennedy Center ceremony because Led Zeppelin was getting honored, she was obviously watching music she liked, but looked like she was simultaneously passing a kidney stone and trying not to shiat her pants, right after someone had crop dusted the area. She just seems to have a very angry 'at rest' face... She really needs to be more aware of this because it just gives people ammo either against her, or against her husband.

At some point you have to consider that maybe, just maybe, given all the absurd attempts to kill Castro and the half-century of doing the exact opposite of what we probably should do, that it is possible propping up Castro is intentional.

Maybe we're just like a cat that just won't quite kill a mouse, too, so there's that. The only thing I do know is that none of it seems like it makes any sense.
