It's a big thing in the DIY music scene to reuse old tapes for your recordings.  The more obscure or ironic the artist on the original, the more street cred you get.

Can we just get one asteroid to hit the planet so we can collectively start civilization over?   Just one.   Is that too much to ask?

You asshat. Then people will only talk about how awesome it was back BEFORE the asteroid came. You would just usher in the newest and most asshatted asshats.

One of my favorite things about these lists for best album or artists is how farkers share their picks, which to me, usually end up being better then what is on the list. Some of the ones that have been added to my playlist from fark have been: Imelda May, Keb' Mo', Susan Tedeschi and Volbeat. Hopefully I'll add a few more before today is over.

I will give many of these a listen. I discovered Melody Gardot on NPR several years ago. Hopefully, this list will lead me to a new artist I like as much.

I finally had to give up listening to the All Songs Considered Podcast, because they came across as such insufferable douches.     Particularly Bob Boilen.  The only thing more predictable and derivative than the cheap Velvet Underground knock-off band is the cheap Lester Bangs knock-off critic.

If you're under the age of 30,   knock yourself out with all these obscure irrelevant indie garage bands and enjoy your fleeting youth.     If you're over the age of 50, like Bob Boilen, and you're still concerned about being cool, and you're the "old dude" at the concert trying to rock with the twenty-somehtings, know that you've completely wasted your finite time on this planet.   Pass the torch, and move on with your sad life.

sigdiamond2000: Is it just me, or does this list of music make you feel out of touch, inadequate, and angry, and like you must respond to it negatively in order to quell your feelings of worthlessness? Anybody else feeling that?

Of all of the Best of 2013 lists I've seen, this is my favorite - it has a good balance of genres. As for the more obscure stuff they're touting, they're tone is more "Hey, you might enjoy this one, check it out." as opposed to say, Pitchfork's "What? You haven't heard this? Begone, slack jawed neanderthal! You are not worthy of the words of this page" vibe.
