Angry, old, white people problems.

Mandela was uppity, and Arpaio's flag simply reflects that fact.

Non-white people need to know their place in Joe's territory.

It was career day.  He was busy talking to prospective deputies.

He says if this means that much to the president, then Obama should have praised the sheriff for placing flags in each of the inmates' cells and making them sing the national anthem.

LOLWUT?

And yet, sheriff joe manages to insult his own ideology and make s entire state look bad without even breaking a sweat. He's very talented.

Bunkosquad and I went to the Grand Canyon this weekend, and he made us stop at a little bump in the road called "Seilgman" AZ or something, because it was a stop on the old Route 66 and he's a geography nerd.

Anywho, we were having lunch at this old timey diner and watching Fox News, and John Stossel's mustache was complaining about government regulations in a hilarious manner. He had pages and pages of books and was helplessly shrugging his shoulders because, how can someone READ these books, and he had a lawyer talking about how "laws are hard".

As we were quietly MST3King the show, the waitress came over and told us how much she admired Stossel, because he was "So right about everything". As we were the only customers not in full camo overalls, we kept it together, and I murmured something about his luxurious mustache.

It's not the whole state that's bad. Joe probably couldn't get elected in Coconino County (Flagstaff), and would've been killed already in Pima County (Tucson). The Navajos (who ironically live in Apache County) would've voted him out, too. It's the blue-hairs and Mormons in Maricopa County who keep re-electing him.

The U.S. Flag code gives the President the authority to decide which foreign dignitaries are to be honored with a flag flying at half-staff.  Joe is free to ignore it, but he also double-downed on stupid by stating the flag "would always remain at half-staff if he recognized every international dignitary who dies."  It's clearly not his call, and it's never his call, to say when the flag should be lowered, just like it's not his job to sign bills or act as head of state.

And for the "not American" aspect of lowering the flag, there is precedent.  The only people with a problem with it, are people with a problem of Obama using Air Force One, and acting all presidential everywhere he goes.

Lyndon Johnson: (Winston Churchill in 1965)
Ronald Reagan: (Anwar Sadat in 1981)
Bill Clinton: (Yitzhak Rabin in 1995 and King Hussein of Jordan in 1999)
George W. Bush: (Pope John Paul II in 2005)

Loosely translated:

"That foreigner is giving me an opportunity to get in some press time, which means that page inches will be dedicated to reporting my Tom-Foolery in this, as opposed to the possibility of reporting on some of the messed up crap that me and mine are engaging in Maricopa, so it's pretty much Win-Win to spout Crazy..."

For a guy (Mandela) who openly praised Fidel Castro, was buddy buddy with Momar Ghaddafi and who rubbed shoulders with Communists I am surprised by the amount of out pouring by our leaders.

Yeah, that. There is absolutely no way Sheriff Joe would have refused if it was a Republican president who ordered the flags to fly at half-staff.

2013-12-10 02:04:32 PM
While I think sherif Joe is an obnoxious, grandstanding angry old codger, I'm not sure I have a problem with his opinion here.

To be honest I know little about Mandela, but I thought the flag at half mast was for American citizens. It isn't the only way to honor a person who died.

Christ, what an asshole.

2013-12-10 02:05:06 PM
I'm no fan of Sheriff Joe, and I think Mandela was a great man, but this is not the correct usage of flying the flag at half staff. Fly it at half staff for Americans. Mandela can be honored appropriately in other ways.

It is not unusual for federal locations, however I don't believe the Sheriff has a federal job.

I hate to, but i have to agree with him. American flags get lowered for Americans.

If he refuses to drop the flag when Obama dies, then we have an issue.

Damn, I can't believe this, but I agree with Joe on this one. I've had a problem with the flag at half-staff for awhile. I don't think it should be lowered for any reason other than the death of a president. Mass shooting, nope. Foreign head of state dying, nope. 100 killed by a tornado, nope. Seems like it's a yo-yo now-a-days.

There is a lot of white-guilt out there, and that tends to gloss over some of the facts.

Hey, its a black guy who stood up to his white devil masters. gotta praise the guy.

I always like to pick the most minute of details to point out that was wrong, yet without ever using the word wrong.  For instance I would have said something like "Yeah but I gotta say, I kinda like reading, so that part was silly/weird."  Alternatively you wildly lie and heap praises upon Stossel and how smart and great he always is but follow that up with a "but this time I think he's wrong."  The goal and underlying lesson is to actually question what you hear and yeah some people you gotta start out with baby steps.  Plant that tiny seed of doubt/question and hope more customers come along to nurture it.

It's "half-staff," not "half-mast." Also, please direct your attention to U.S. Code, Title 4, section 7, subsection m:

The flag, when flown at half-staff, should be first hoisted to the peak for an instant and then lowered to the half-staff position. The flag should be again raised to the peak before it is lowered for the day. On Memorial Day the flag should be displayed at half-staff until noon only, then raised to the top of the staff. By order of the President, the flag shall be flown at half-staff upon the death of principal figures of the United States Government and the Governor of a State, territory, or possession, as a mark of respect to their memory. In the event of the death of other officials or foreign dignitaries, the flag is to be displayed at half-staff according to Presidential instructions or orders, or in accordance with recognized customs or practices not inconsistent with law.

The lead story on Fox Mobile yesterday was about the 'huge egos' of world leaders and how it made security difficult.

So another story about how the Blah Guy doesn't know his place.
