Obama and Raul shaking hands is a terrible act that diminishes America and makes us look weak on the world stage.

However, Nixon (R) shaking hands with Chairman Mao was the greatest thing a brilliant American statesman has ever done.

odinsposse: It's important to point out why Cuba, currently, really is our enemy.

It's not because they're Communists. We're quite friendly with Communist China.

It's not because they used to support our enemies, the Soviets. We're dealing quite well with India which also had close ties to the Soviets.

It's not because of their treatment of their people. We're close allies with Saudi Arabia which has an awful human rights record.

The reason we can't open relations with Cuba is because...

Okay, I can't think of a good reason but Reagan hated them so fark Cuba forever and ever. Diplomacy is for pussies since it works without spending billions or killing thousands.

Because you need to win Florida to win a Presidential election, and south Florida is a bunch of wingnut Castro haters.

To be fair, modern China is only nominally Communist.  These days, China's government bears more resemblance to classic "third way" fascism.

Umm... yeah. The anti-Cuba thing started with Reagan. absolutely. That was a key issue for Reagan. Before Reagan, we really had no issue with Cuba. It's all Reagan's fault really. If only Reagan hadn't launched that Bay of Pigs fiasco. Stupid Reagan.

After this great liberator is laid to rest, and when we have returned to our cities and villages and rejoined our daily routines, let us search for his strength. Let us search for his largeness of spirit somewhere inside of ourselves. And when the night grows dark, when injustice weighs heavy on our hearts, when our best-laid plans seem beyond our reach, let us think of Madiba and the words that brought him comfort within the four walls of his cell: "It matters not how strait the gate, how charged with punishments the scroll, I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul."

HeartBurnKid: You know what?

Good.

The cold war has been over for almost 2030 years.  It's about time we normalized relations with Cuba.  I'm not saying the Cuban government are saints or anything, but keeping them ostracized from the world community helps nobody.  The only reason the embargo has persisted this long is because of a vocal minority that happens to be concentrated in a swing state.

FTFM.

odinsposse: he reason we can't open relations with Cuba is because...

... there is an old generation of Cuban exiles, and their immediate descendents, who are eternally (though understandably) butthurt about having their factories and shops nationalized by the Castro regime. They happen to live in the swingiest swing state in the Union -- a state which also happens to have a sizable chunk of the total Electoral College votes.

Either party pushing for normalizing relations with Cuba = losing that bloc of votes (and therefore Florida and its EVs) to the other party for at least a generation.

/Seriously, Bacardi Rum just mentioned their butthurt in a recent TV ad.

Yeah. I mean, we sort of pushed Castro in that direction and tried to kill him a bunch of times and all, so I guess our hands aren't entirely clean here.  It would be great for both countries if we could finally normalize relations with Cuba.  I'd love to go to Cuba legally.

We'll normalize our relationship with Cuba within the month that Fidel Castro finally kicks the bucket. With him gone, there will be a lot more popular support for letting Americans have the freedom to travel there again.

Conservative/Independent Farkers are definitely not as extreme or ignorant as others in the blogosphere.
Sorry if that sounds like a back-handed compliment.  However, I do remember farkers getting really pissed off at Obama bowing to some foreign politicians and the concept of Obama going on "an apology" tour did have quite a bit of traction with many farkers.

It's already been said, but the Cuban expat community in South Florida is vocal, organized and batshiat insane.

We're almost to the point where a democrat could guarantee a win (in a presidential race) without Florida, but until that's a safe bet, normalizing relations with Cuba would be betting the farm on something whose only political upside is the cigar lobby.
