I can handle the snow & ice with no problem. In fact, I quite enjoy a ride in the snow and find it comforting. It's the stupid panicky humans that ruin everything.

I had a metro car to myself this morning, which was disappointing when I finally got to my work stop because I had to put my pants back on.

Seriously, most of the people you hear whining in DC moved there from other places -- the city's growth is pretty much driven by these people (and I guarantee you it's not people from SE you're hearing from when you hear the complaints about snow).

Much like in politics, the real problem isn't DC, but people from all over who moved to DC.

2013-12-10 11:16:48 AM
Move the Capital if you can't handle a little snow. Bunch of pansies.

2013-12-10 11:16:50 AM
If you live where winters are really harsh, your local government has the gear and people to deal with it and budgets accordingly.

In the DC area, really big snowfalls normally only happen once or twice a year.  Rather than spend the money to handle them, we just do a day off and get to the snow removal after it stops.

But LA, faaaaaaaaaaaark, if they got 2" of snow, it would be a freaking nightmare (for them)

I live in upstate New York, and used to be a cashier at a supermarket.  I swear every single time the forecast was a foot of snow, people would rush and buy stuff.  Also, people seem to forget how to drive in snow every year.  I don't get it.  If a person lives in upstate New York, you shouldn't have to rush to buy out the grocery store, and you should know how to drive in snow.

They've really gotten pretty soft here in eastern CT.  They cancelled schools  HOURS BEFORE THE FIRST FLAKES FELL!Right now, there's maybe an inch or two out there.  Schools easily could have squeezed in a half-day and not have to make it up in the summer.

This is now a Wisconsin weather thread.  13 degrees here in southeast WI.  (But with windchill it says it feels like -3)

Eh.  I had a stupid long commute to work yesterday with barely more than a dusting.

But I guess long slow commute >>> people trying to rush driving like idiots, so I shouldn't complain *too* much.  But it took 30 minutes yesterday, and 12 today.

Three buttheads driving to fast for conditions caused this mess.  If people would just slow down and pay attention it wouldn't be so bad.

Bingo.  Live in Silver Spring now, but grew up in Phoenix.  Drivers ed spent more time on dust storm driving than snow driving.  Do you want me on the Beltway when it's icy?

That.  I live in Illinois.  We sometimes get some pretty good snowfall.  Sunday we had.....HALF AN INCH! (where I live, other places got more)....omg, the wrecks that were on the evening news!  And not one, but TWO people said they left their cars running, unattended and unlocked and.....the cars got stolen.  These people admitted this on the local news.

Every freakin year, the first snow means a good portion of drivers lose their minds and act like they've never seen it before, much less driven in it.  It's ILLINOIS,(not Chicago area) so no one comes here from other places to live, so that's not an excuse.

Gah.

Those are also mostly flat.  Driving in the winter there is hardly an accomplishment.  I used to drive an old Fox body Mustang GT on packed snow & ice when I lived in the midwest, wasn't really a big deal.  Try that in a place with actual hills and get back to me.

You should see how Charlotte overreacts...they'll cut into programming and have the local reporters instruct people on how to walk on ice and shovel snow...you would think these people grew up in the Sahara.

The DC Metro area is populated by a lot of transplants with a lot of different driving styles.  I mean, you've got the guy in the giant, lifted F-150 4x4 who thinks that he can go 9000mph because of the 4x4.  Then you've got the 5'3", 110lb soccer mom who cant reach the top of her giant SUV and leaves several inches of snow on the roof of her car.

oh its sooo fun...

You're talking 6-8 inches in Loudoun, Frederick & upper Montgomery counties right now.  Telling all of them to come to DC in this would be a reverse Carmageddon, hence the closures.

This. When I was going to college at a school that attracted students from all over, you could tell  exactly who was from the South and who wasn't by how many layers they put on just to walk to class when it snowed.

I grew up in IN, but the reason you don't drive during this kind of weather around here is because people do things 10 times more stupid than they normally do and it's miraculous that that's even possible.

"It's 32, there's ice/sleet/snow on the road with no sand or salt, I can still drive 15 over on every road in my invincible SUV, tailgate 6" behind you, cut people off, stop on a dime, take a 90 degree turn at 30mph" etc.

Or, as happened last year, a lady walked right in front of my car with her hand out to stop me when I had just started going down an icy hill because her husband needed help getting his rear wheel drive Lexus up the icy hill.  After managing not to run her over and nearly hitting a parked van, I tried to explain how stupid what she just did was and I told them their best bet was to try to back the car all the way down the hill and get a little momentum to try and come back up.  He managed to sort of back up and accidentally park it on the opposite side of the road and I wished them luck and drove away.

I aint drivin no wheres today.
