Many men smoke
but Fu Man Chu.

Quite frankly, I think that the "Truth" commercials and Anti-smoking campaigns bankrolled by the smoking industry are the most brilliant guerrilla marketing campaign in history. Why, by showing just how big of a douche that you can be, they're encouraging those kids to smoke while telling them not to.

They're spending the money on drugs and alcohol?

"We frequently hold Florida up as a model,"

It's so rare to see that phrase used with a positive meaning.

Of course! If you smoke in the meth lab bad things will happen.

They'd smoke but they're too stupid to use a lighter.

Not smokin' pole, that's increased rapidly

if government truly cared about health a cut-off date would be set. born after that date, no tobacco purchase, ever. in time the hooked users would slowly all die off. USA big tobacco has a massive market outside the USA to exploit but greed is Job 1 always.

As a Florida resident I believe that.  Now if they said fewer teens were using chew, I would call them a bunch of damn liars.

Big Tobacco would argue a) First Amendment rights, b) Civil liberties, and/or c) 'Murica!

Kind of puzzling, I know.

I see more kids smoking these days than I used to, but they're always hipsters or white trash types. I think there's just more shiatty loser kids around now rather than smoking is attracting some new market.

I'm skeptical.  Does the state have a vested interest in reporting a lower rate of teen smoking?

Just don't believe a state in the south would have a rate 50% of the national average.

"The state spent 4.2 percent of the $1.6 billion it collected last year from the 1998 tobacco settlement and tobacco taxes"

If Florida had any hand in collecting the data then they are probably cooking it. That way they can justify not spending more of the settlement money on prevention. What are they doing with the rest of the money? Giving it directly to politicians?

We do frequently see headlines that suggest Floridians have hit a record low.

Knock it off, Florida, you're screwing up the actuarial tables.

Its because you shouldn't smoke whilst pregnant

On second thought, let's not go to Florida.  It is a silly place.

I wonder if that lower number has anything to do with people who quit smoking tobacco products but still get nicotine by vaping.

We need the tax revenue so start smoking you punks.

Might it be that an increase in the Hispanic population has caused the rate to fall? Hispanics smoke less than both blacks and whites, and I believe the number of Hispanics in Florida continues to grow.

Where is all this "Big Tobacco Marketing" they were darkly speaking of in the article? I've not seen a billboard or any ads in a decade roughly. Sure, they used to be everywhere but nowadays? Not so much.

The only thing I've seen even remotely close to advertising/marketing are the price signs at convenience store counters. Apparently the word "Marlboro" on a red sign with a pack price is enough to start kids smoking. Who knew?

Whoa, come to think of it I can't remember the last time I saw someone of Hispanic ethnicity smoking a cigarette.

I can. Fat Hispanic woman smoking at the beach. Of course, she wasn't an immigrant or anything, she was basically Florida white trash, just Hispanic.

Remember to thank a Native American.

The northern half of Florida is as Deep South as you can get.  The southern half, I'll more or less agree with you.  Florida is the state where, the further north you go, the further into the Deep South you get.

They lost the war, they got Florida.

If they try and give it back, we'll open fire on the CSA again.

Tobacco is the enduring Native American revenge, killing more of them than they did of us..
