But it's worth considering just what Netanyahu is willing to spending Israel's money on (in addition to a super-fancy bed): $2,700 a year on ice cream. $18,000 on clothes, hair, and makeup (double the outlay of just a few years ago). $940,000 on three separate residences

Yeh fark what a racist idiot. Who does he think he is? Buying food, and clothes, and places to live... And make up... dudes gotta look sexy for his people. If that doesn't prove genocide is happening in Israel I don't know what will.

I don't know what genocide you're referring to, but Israel is an apartheid state, like South Africa was a couple decades ago.  And it's a borderline theocracy to boot...

It's not a theocracy. There are hardliner factions and parties for the Hassidic, but a secular state, for the most part.

/It's just that the hardliners are crazy.

Unless you're Orthodox, of course, in which case you receive special privileges from the state, or if you marry a Palestinian, in which case the state refuses to recognize your marriage.

There's been widespread resentment of the ultra-Orthodox and that's been slowly changing. New rules are being put in place that removes automatic exemption of Ultra-Orthodox men from the draft (there was a big protest over it today). There are also changes taking place in the Israel welfare offices to prevent the ultra-Orthodox from living off of welfare while they attend yeshiva.

Well, obviously, there are still problems in the country. However, as a whole, I wouldn't count it as a theocratic state. There's obviously bigotry at work still, but it's not as if the entire country is ruled by rabbis.

/Many highly developed countries in the world recognize same-sex marriage. The US, for the most part, doesn't - and it's often through the lobbying efforts of religious concerns. However, this doesn't make the US a theocracy.

Or you want to farm pork, which is illegal in Israel.  You telling me that has nothing to do with religion?

The Basic Laws of Israel clearly state that Israel is a Jewish State.  Yes, there are people in Israel who challenge this, and say that Israel should not be ruled by religion, but it still is.  Else secular Jewish people in Israel wouldn't need to say it.

It could be that South Africa has one of the highest anti-semitism rates in the world and in recent years 2/3 of the jews have fled, and the current ruling party has a history of antisemitism regarding the local Jewish population and reduced police protection to their neighborhoods, so the jews have to now pay for private security.

Or more likely it's because Israel was a major supporter of apartheid (I wonder why) and it's a big embarrassing albatross around their necks even now.

"Scheduling conflicts."
"Super Bowl."
"Gotta throw out the first illegal on MLB opening day."
"I can't. There's Jews!"
"What would our loving Arab friends think?"
"What would our loving ultra-orthodox Jewish friends think?"
"Somebody's gotta stay home and keep the Germans from invading. AGAIN!"

i think by focusing on the current apartheid-like system in Israel on some of these posts, we may be missing the fact that Israel was one of the few countries to maintain friendly relations with the actual apartheid government of south africa and one of the last nations to finally cave to international pressure and break this relationship off. But I'm sure Black South Africans were somehow a threat to the survival of israel.

But since that happened, even though he supported some elements of the Palestinian struggle, Mandela extended his hand in friendship to Israel and expressed that he had no ill-will towards its people and both states have (as far as I know) maintained good relationships. So I guess what I'm saying is... stay classy Bibi.

Okay. Never mind that apartheid is a thing in Israel, Does subby, (not to mention modmins), not know that Netanyahu is not the President of Israel? He's the farking PRIME MINISTER. He can get tossed at any election or by a vote of no confidence. If it were that easy here, W would have been gone in 2006, latest. Prime Minister Obama, would have faced who knows how many no confidence votes.
