The important thing is that New Yorkers feel safer.

Eddie Adams from Torrance: How do they expect residents of New York City to hunt if they take away all their guns?

With rat terriers.

Just to give you an idea of how bad this is, this gun is banned in NYC:

picturearchive.gunauction.com

Because the magazine holds 7 rounds of .22 LR, and the limit for long guns is 5 rounds.

Also, I suspect there's been a recent string of boating accidents involving these gun owners. Coincidentally, they had their guns on board and lost them all. Shucks.

Just out of curiosity, what's the urban application for .22 LR? Sniping rats at short distances?

//Not that I disagree with your point, just saying that gun might be the single least practical firearm imaginable in Nueva York.

So I guess that talking point - you know the one, the "no one has ever used a registry to confiscate guns in the US" talking point - is busted, huh?

Are the people who live in New York City prevented from ever leaving the jurisdiction of the city itself for purposes of hunting?  'Cause that's a quintessential American small game rifle.

Hunting may not be legal within the limits of the city itself, but that doesn't mean that there aren't people who live in the city that go hunting elsewhere.

Elegy: So I guess that talking point - you know the one, the "no one has ever used a registry to confiscate guns in the US" talking point - is busted, huh?

It was busted *YEARS* ago.  By NYC, btw:  They registered long guns back in the late 1960s.  Then, in the early 1990's, after they passed an "assault weapons ban" that was an actual ban, everyone who had a gun that matched the description got a letter like this one:  Either turn it in, move it out of the city, or sell it.

It's a "soft" confiscation.  They won't go door-to-door with the police, because they know how bad that will look if they do that.  At least, they won't do it for a while.  At least not until they can make the case that the person who has a bolt action .22 LR squirrel gun that happens to take magazines that hold 7 rounds instead of the legal maximum of 5 is a real danger to society with his "assault weapon".

But hey, why won't you gun nuts sit down for an honest discussion and compromise? Who needs re-attachable clipgazines and transformer shoulder sticks?

Peter von Nostrand: Well it sounds like you guys finally have something to whine about

It's history repeating itself.

http://www.nytimes.com/1991/07/31/nyregion/assault-weapon-ban-passes .h tml

The City Council passed a bill, 28 to 4, yesterday banning assault weapons in New York City. Mayor David N. Dinkins said he would sign the bill as soon as possible. Owners of registered guns had fought the proposal. It defines an assault weapon as a semiautomatic or automatic firearm with such military-type features as a folding stock, bayonet mount, grenade launcher, flash suppressor or modifications of them. A shotgun with a revolving cylinder magazine also falls under that category. Owners have 90 days to get rid of the weapons once the bill is signed. Violators could be fined up to $5,000.

NYC enacted long gun registration in 1967, so they basically knew who legally owned rifles covered under the newly enacted ban.

2013-12-09 01:40:44 PM
The real tragedy of this move is that if only Rudy Guliani had the courage to do this back in 2000, the World Trade Center would still be standing.

2013-12-09 01:46:30 PM

Gonz: Just out of curiosity, what's the urban application for .22 LR? Sniping rats at short distances?

Actually, I own that very same particular model of gun, given to me as a Christmas present by my parents when I was 11 or 12, and I have in fact used it for sniping at rat-sized animals using CB caps.

CB caps are like a .22 Short with a very light bullet and almost all of the powder removed.  You get something that's still lethal on something the size of a rat, but it makes almost no noise when fired out of a rifle.  Two loudest sounds you hear are the striker falling, and the kugelschlag of the bullet hitting whatever you aimed at.

I wouldn't recommend hunting rats with it in NYC, but you could certainly do indoor target shooting with an appropriate backstop, and you wouldn't even have to wear ear protection.

Another point of NYC law:  it's illegal for anyone under 21 years of age to own even a .22 LR gun, even if it conforms to the 5 round limit.

Of course, this is the jurisdiction that tried to get a man to register his flintlock even though the law expressly exempts them from registration, so what do you expect.

/That resulted in my first greenlight.

Sad, isn't it?

From what I've seen of the NY S.A.F.E. propaganda, a bunch of the guns they're banning, they don't even know why, or what it is...

Anybody associated with this steaming pile of blatant disregard for 2A rights need to have themselves removed from office. This monstrosity was shoehorned through on the guise that this will save lives because "Dem A-Salt Weapons!Babbykillers! HURR-DURR If we make it illegal, criminals won't have them either"

First, the cigarettes. Good, I don't smoke. Then your 24oz. Soda. Good, I only drink 20oz. .....

"This year will go down in history. For the first time, a civilized nation has full gun registration. Our streets will be safer, our police more efficient, and the world will follow our lead into the future!"

Sound reasonable to you Brooklyn? This was apparently said by Adolph Hitler on Apr. 15, 1935.

Even virulently anti-gun England doesn't have a ban on .22 LR rifles that hold more than 5 rounds.

Didn't finish my thought.

If your gun laws make the gun laws of the United Kingdom seem unrestrictive in comparison, then maybe, *JUST* maybe, you've gone too far.

The law has been in effect for years.  It's nice of NYC to allow people to take them out of the city or turn them in instead of arresting them and prosecuting them.

This is something I don't understand. Why would magazine size make the entire gun illegal and not just the magazine or clip itself? Can't you modify or trade in for a smaller clip?

Not being snarky, genuinely curious.
