For that matter, I'm not sure any other Big XII team was worthy of a BCS bowl this year other than the conference champ.

Hey Subby. Guess what bowls people who either can't or won't shell out $100 or more for cable TV will be watching:

4. Cotton Bowl
10. Las Vegas Bowl

All the others are on ESPN.

Come back Subby and tell us how great it was to pay that kind of money for watching exploited players suffering permanent injuries so people can bet on them like they are horses on a track or pit bulls in a ring.

Bowl Games: Much ado about nothing.

Don't mean much without a real playoff system that every other level above and below the FBS is able to pull off.

Yeah, #2 vs a #15 team is SOOOO exciting.

I have no problems with the Gator Bowl being #19. There's a slim chance I'll snooze through the game a bit, though that may have more to do with my being in Hawaii on New Years Day.

Holy shiat, the cheapest tickets to the Pinstripe Bowl are $99!

Did they always charge that much for this meaningless game or is it just because two "local" teams are in it that jacked the prices up?

I don't have ESPN, so if what you're saying is true, then I'll be sad the first week of January. That really sucks.

The only way OU keeps Bama under 30 is if Saban starts Katherine Webb at QB.

I only did the top 10. Great news! The Sun Bowl is on CBS. The Cotton is on Fox--that may be Fox cable, who knows--and the Outback Bowl is on ABC.

But for those of us who do have ESPN and souses who may be opposed to that much football this works out pretty well because now I can just watch most of the games on the WatchESPN app on my tablet.

Bowls selections are made first by whatever written rules there are, and money second. I don't remember the arcane wizardry I read that prevented them from picking tOSU, but somebody else got them first. So why Oklahoma, then? Because you guys travel well. That's pretty much it.

Playoffs work for Pee Wee, Middle School, High School, DIII, DII, FCS and the NFL...but somehow it would be the end of the world if FBS tried to implement such an idea.

the bowls get to pick teams one at a time and have a certain order. there isn't a general oversight committee that says "okay we have these 14 teams, the orange bowl should be X and Y, etcetc".

the orange and sugar bowls both lost conference champions to the title game, so they pick before anyone else. they aren't allowed though to use those picks on teams from conferences that have automatic tie-ins with other bcs bowls that have also lost conf champs. (in other words, another bcs bowl can't pick an ACC team without the orange's permission, another bcs bowl can't pick a SEC team without the sugar bowl's permission).

the orange used their first replacement pick on ohio state, knowing that they still had "dibs" on clemson.

the sugar used their first replacement pick on oklahoma, knowing they still had "dibs" on alabama.

i think a lot of people forget that while the bcs is an alliance, the bowls still make decisions on their own, for their own self-interest. they're simply going to grab the teams that make them the most money, regardless of whether it's a compelling matchup or good for college football. that's why there have to be rules about who can be picked, otherwise you'd have BCS bowls fighting over 6-loss notre dame teams every year.

What the hell, Orange Bowl?

Why is the #2 team from a meh conference versus the #2 team from another meh conference the second best game?

Not saying it's the end of the world if FBS doesn't have playoffs.  Just amusing that the 'best' college football teams play in Bowl games which is basically the rough equivalent of a participation trophy.   If you win a Bowl game, whoopty doo.

Now if there was a true playoff system and a Championship game that would determine which FBS team was the best in College football, then they have bragging rights.   Putting a #3 seed against a #10 seed isn't exciting.  A true playoff system most likely wouldn't happen in FBS because too many hurt feelings if X team failed to get into the playoffs or was beaten in the playoffs.

Bschott007: Now if there was a true playoff system and a Championship game that would determine which FBS team was the best in College football, then they have bragging rights.

Playoffs do not determine a "best" team in college football. They determine a tournament champion.

Bschott007: Putting a #3 seed against a #10 seed isn't exciting.

Seems like you're looking to have a 1 seed vs 16 seed. I guess that IS exciting, though.

Mostly, playoff proponents don't seem to understand that there is a difference between "offers excitement/has increased entertainment value" and "is the best way to determine the best team over a several-month-long period."

And your reasoning for them not having playoffs is the stupidest I've read.

2013-12-09 01:18:37 PM
also, no one is complaining.  We are shaking our heads and chuckling.  This isn't the Super Bowl.  Winning the Rose Bowl means...what?   When the #1 team in the SEC beats the #7 team and the #2 team in the Big 10 beats the #9 team who really cares?

Now making the Rose Bowl the 'Super Bowl' of FBS would make it mean something.  Have a playoff between the top teams in the major conferences and the final two teams go on to the Rose Bowl or something similar.   Leave the other 'bowl' games as participation trophy games.  Just make a meaningful Bowl game to determine the best team in the FBS like they do for FCS or the NFL.

2013-12-09 01:18:53 PM
BTW, watching Oklahoma get annihilated in a BCS bowl is tradition.

/though it's one I'd be fine with them doing away with, I do enjoy sad Bob Stoops face.

2013-12-09 01:20:50 PM

Bschott007: Now making the Rose Bowl the 'Super Bowl' of FBS would make it mean something.

Why do you feel that games need to "mean something"? Do you not get fulfilled in your own life? You can't enjoy football (which is a game, BTW, being played by people you don't know and are unlikely to meet) unless you know that every team but one doesn't get to end the season on a positive note? Says a lot about you.

Not sure why people are excited about FSU / Auburn.

This game looks like a total mismatch to me.  A team with a strong passing attack and good run defense vs a team with awful pass defense and no pass offense.

Why was MSU so happy about going to the Rose Bowl after beating tOSU? They were pretty much guaranteed to go since if tOSU won they would have gone to the NCG and MSU would have defaulted to the Rose Bowl anyway.

So why not just let everybody go to a bowl?  The two teams with the worst records in the country would be more entertaining to watch play each other than most bowl matchups.
