I wonder if in the future people will go around with supercapacitors in backpacks to steal charge from electric cars.

I was confused -- because a lit cigarette isn't hot enough to start a fire.  Apparently, though, after RingTFA, it was lighting the cigarette that caused the fire.

There are simply no word that can adequately describe some people's level of stupidity.

The article seems to imply it was punching a hole in the gas tank (likely sparks) that caused it.  Either way it's world class stupid.

If there is anything that this horrible tragedy can teach us, it's that a male model's life is a precious, precious commodity. Just because we have chiseled abs and stunning features, it doesn't mean that we too can't not die in a freak gasoline fight accident.

I have to steal gas 'cause I'm broke

An intelligent person would not be a gas thief.
An intelligent person would not be a smoker.
Then, there's this guy.

Meaning if there are no fumes it will probably not ignite.

Wow, that took a disappointingly long time.

I actually encourage people to light cigarettes while stealing gas, Submitter.

They don't steal gas from occupied vehicles, so the casualties are limited to those who deserve it.

This would be correct.  A lit cigarette in a container of gas does squat.  Believe me, I have done it.

Fumes though - All bets are off.

Gasoline vapor is heavier than air and readily spreads.

I saw a guy take a little too long to light a campfire with gas.  He poured the fuel, but had to look for his matches for maybe a minute.

When the fire was finally lit with a muffled boom, a flame front left the pit and ran a barely perceptible drainage.  I watched it run maybe thirty feet, until it reached a backpack that had been set down momentarily and had caused a pond of vapor to build against it.

Another muffled boom.

We easily put out the secondary fire and retrieved the singed pack, but I learned right then how nasty gasoline and air mixed together can be.

Had the backpack been an ignition source, say another camfire or a stove, the flame front would have run the other way, and our guy wouldn't have needed his matches.
