Sibal's office sent an e-mail inviting journalists to the launch of his new personal website using the free service Hotmail.

So the minister uses a PERSONAL e-mail account to send out an invite for his PERSONAL website?

Ok...

jaytkay: apoptotic: The newly elected mayor of Edmonton wants to (and has started to) move all municipal staff and departments from the current @edmonton.ca platform to GMail/GoogleApps.

They'll still keep the @edmonton.ca domain, including for their email.

Theyr'e simply outsourcing their IT like tons of other businesses and government agencies.

The problem is that now City communications will be housed not in Canadian servers but in the US and subject to US law.

When the University of Alberta moved to Google, the province's information and privacy commissioner had this to say: "Users of the University email system must be informed that their emails will reside in a foreign jurisdiction and will be subject to the laws of that jurisdiction, such as in this case, the USA Patriot Act. Individuals can then make an informed decision about what kind of information they will transmit through email. The University has agreed to inform the student body and employees that it won't be able to guarantee protection against possible disclosure of emails residing in the United States."

Phil Clinton: *sigh* I know I'm setting myself up for a beating here, but what is wrong with hotmail?  I have my name[nospam-﹫-backwards]liamtoh*com because my name[nospam-﹫-backwards]liamg*com isn't available.  Seems to work just fine for me.

Nothing really, but it takes a long while for a history of mediocrity to be forgotten
