Sibal's office sent an e-mail inviting journalists to the launch of his new personal website using the free service Hotmail.

So the minister uses a PERSONAL e-mail account to send out an invite for his PERSONAL website?

Ok...

India has a minister of secure email policy?

Sounds like they're ahead of us in at least 1 way (us=USA)...

All we got are ministers of conformity and dictatorship (FCC and Homeland Security).

Hotmail has notoriously bad security issues. And this is the minister who is in charged of beefing up their govt communications security.

I don't know about anyone else's reasons, but it's not remotely secure. It can be broken into by anyone with access to your facebook page, if they care enough.

For most people, that isn't an issue, no one cares what's in your hotmail. For someone with high-level access to sensitive international communications, however, hotmail can be a really juicy target.

At the time they were bought by Microsoft, a lot of hotmail's infrastructure was in India.

Not really sure what the outrage is here unless it's hipster butthurt because he's not using @me.com or gmail.

People still use Hotmail?

2013-12-08 10:49:49 PM
This whole article is pretty much why it was rebranded to Outlook.com by Microsoft.

/I use Gmail as my primary, but I still have a hotmaill.com email address that I created back in 1996 before it was owned by Microsoft. I think I still have some emails from my first purchases on Amazon and Newegg filed away in there somewhere.

Generals and snarky Farkers like me, who are undoubtedly made of steel and living in a floating castle of gold use it, so go with the winning team!

Me, I was just going for a joke.

Outrage is probably that a minister doesn't have a minister[nospam-﹫-backwards]tnemtraped*gov*in email.

1) it just looks silly

The Microsofit web interface is really nice. It has been for years.

As the first popular free email service it got a bad rep because all the dirtballs used it.

India outsources their travel visas to a US company. I wanted so much to call their support line just so I could find out if the phone was answered by some guy with a heavy Texan drawl claiming he was Ramesh from Dehli.

When it comes down to it, basic SMTP email should not be considered secure anyway.

Better to think of it as mailing a postcard. So meh, Hotmail, BFD

/hopefully he didn't write an autobiography so hackers can 'recover' his password from knowing things like where he met his wife.

The problem is that now City communications will be housed not in Canadian servers but in the US and subject to US law.

When the University of Alberta moved to Google, the province's information and privacy commissioner had this to say: "Users of the University email system must be informed that their emails will reside in a foreign jurisdiction and will be subject to the laws of that jurisdiction, such as in this case, the USA Patriot Act. Individuals can then make an informed decision about what kind of information they will transmit through email. The University has agreed to inform the student body and employees that it won't be able to guarantee protection against possible disclosure of emails residing in the United States."

2013-12-09 12:03:03 AM
To be clear, the issue is using an email service not under national control, not using Hotmail - the article makes that clear, too, subby.
