I like that TFA describes him as "The 'Rocket Man' singer." A song from 1972. It really puts "'Mean Girls' star" into perspective.

farkeruk: Hero? This is the guy that took the white apartheid money back in the early 80s and played Sun City. So, I guess he considers the rights of homosexuals quite highly, but as he's white, well, fark black people.

What is it with Sun City and Queens?

That was a long time ago.  While there is no excuse for what he did, perhaps this is an attempt to do some good.  Or have you  decided to write someone off completely because if a terrible mistake they made 25 years ago?

I am not defending his actions in the 80's.  I am not defending him taking a pay check from anyone.  I am willing to see this event from what it is and hope that this exposure serves to put more pressure on the Russian government to be further embarrassed.  Maybe it will lead to some good.

But no, he is just a greedy entertainer, let's ignore any attempt he ever makes at doing good.

Yeah, but I'll bet he'll play Putin's wedding if he asks nicely (read: pays handsomely).

I don't think TFA was (entirely) referencing the song on that line....

I saw him when he was in NYC at MSG just before leaving for Russia.  On stage he made a joke about going there to do that.  Glad he actually did it.

whidbey: Love EJ's music up until 1975, can't imagine him being able to hit even half of the notes he used to. That said, I've heard he's put on good shows in recent years.

I saw him live at MSG last Tuesday.  He put on an amazing show.  Just shy of 3 straight hours with virtually no breaks.  Even more impressive given his age.  You should strongly reconsider and go see him live.

Peter von Nostrand: That takes some guts to do that in Russia

He's a US citizen with enough money to  buy Russia eight or ten times over.  The CIA would have the nuts of anyone that tried anything in a vise before they even finished thinking they might consider trying something.

Not "even Putin",  especially Putin.  That dude's in "we just need an excuse" territory with the assassination departments of half the world already.

No he's not and no he hasn't. Maybe his words would mean more if he hadn't of performed instead of turning up and taking his cheque, but then it's only a couple of days removed from Elton's heartfelt tribute to Mandela, who's plight also didn't stop him earning tens of millions through the 80's playing Sun City.

I enjoyed him a lot more when he was on coke.

LewDux: hardinparamedic: Peter von Nostrand: Putin poisoned a guy while he was in England. I don't think he cares

So Putin kills Elton John, or arrests him. Either way.

The entire western world sees one of it's most famous, most beloved entertainers being openly persecuted

And then?

Well then most Western countries pull out of the Olympics or force the IOC to move them somewhere else. Russia is faced with trade and economic sanctions......

Not really. Elton John is pretty much untouchable. It would validate the world's opinion of Russia's policies, and negatively impact their bottom line. If anything is true about Russia, they care about money more than they care about morals.

No, it takes balls either way.

LewDux: hardinparamedic: LewDux: And then?

The Russian economy crashes because all of those lucrative western markers have reason to withdraw their business.

.. because Elton John was arrested

Yes, because we all know that western companies do not place profit #1 and instead care about justice and morality!

Elton John's fans, on the other hand? That's a different story.

Glad you could make money off their blood, Sir Elton. Hope you enjoy the feeling of moral superiority you pretend to when you watch your bank statement go up a few notches.

I love when people make these statements. It makes more sense for him to go there and make headlines to show the Russian populace that homosexuals are not monsters, or whatever they believe. It's even better that he was able to use a platform to make greater headlines in the country to state what a god awful situation it is over there.

Peter von Nostrand: whither_apophis: skinink: Peter von Nostrand: That takes some guts to do that in Russia

Would have took more guts to boycott Russia and not play there. But money's money. Elton made his, the Russian Gov't/Mob made their money off the concert, everyone is happy. I wouldn't expect they would be too bothered about a gay entertainer they let in the country speak about gay matters.

Elton John played Rush Limbaugh's wedding. You write Sir Elton a big enough check and he'll do anything.

/and Rush had a gay wedding.

Oh wow. That's pretty bad

Actually, I thought it was a clever move: Rush Limbaugh asked Elton John to play his wedding.  His fourth wedding.  Elton on the other hand has been with the same guy for over twenty years.
