I can't figure out how Lil' Danny Snyder actually became a billionaire.  I know it has something to do with "direct marketing", but he has done such a terrible job running the Redskins -- and not just in player personnel terms -- that it leads me to question his business acumen overall.

The real mystery is how in God's name it is the second richest franchise behind the Dallas Cowboys.

They might want to do something about their special teams.

Is this the last game Shanny coaches with the Skins? Feels like maybe so, especially considering the timing of this "He about quit anyway" story.

He will last the remainder of the season, even Snyder knows firing him at this point serves no purpose. Now the special teams coach should have been fired at half-time of this game

You kind of feel for him though, there's only so many times you can tell a team "Wrap up when you tackle".

George Steinbrenner figured it out eventually.  Of course, it took him getting kicked out of baseball for a year for that to happen.

The Skins' coaching job has to be close to, if not, the toughest in the NFL simply because of Snyder.

Living in the Washington area, but thankfully not a Washington fan.  Still, I'm exposed to more of their games than I care to admit.  As a result, I have to say this: Snyder doesn't build football teams.  He brings in big names and showers them with money.  Think about all of the players he's brought in for massive money that never really made a big difference for the team: Smith, Sanders, etc.  I have no doubt that if he could, he'd already have RGIII signed to a gazillion dollar contract.

I think it's time to bring in some high-priced veterans.  Holdhold name types, you know?

No, not to win games.  To sell jerseys.  What is it you think Snyder has been trying to do all these years?

2013-12-08 04:59:33 PM
As a Redskins fan, it's pretty depressing to realize that we have no hope until Snyder is gone, and we probably have to wait for him to die for that to happen.  He's too much of a fan to stop meddling or sell the team.  Our only hope is for him to hire a coach who can stand up to him or whom he respects enough to give him some room (this is why Joe Gibbs has been the most successful Snyder-era coach, but he was too old to follow through with the momentum he had built).

If only there were a way to have the team taken away from him.  Maybe one day he will be convicted of a crime that forces him to give up the team.  I wouldn't be surprised if his greed has crossed the line of legality at some point.  If only there were people in Washington who would be capable of uncovering (or even fabricating) such a crime... it would be nice if DC could put its skills to work for a noble cause.

I don't think Gibbs was too old I just think he found coaching overpaid players and having to deal with the salary cap.

I honestly don't blame Snyder for meddling his first couple years owning the team. What fan wouldn't want to meddle if they found themselves owning thier favorite team.  Snyder just needs to put a strong GM in place and take it from there

Snyder kept Zorn way too long even thought Zorn was obviously trying to get fired.  Now you have to wonder if Shanahan is egging Snyder on, too.  If MS quits he probably doesn't get that last year of pay, right?

Do you let a guy manage your franchise asset when he's on his way out and probably doesn't like that asset anyway?  Is that why RG3 is being allowed to stay in these games WAY too long (including the playoff game last year)?

If I'm Snyder I'm dumping Shanahan at 9am tomorrow and protecting my investment.

it's a shame they don't have Zorn as RGIII QB coach I think they would have got along well.

It makes me laugh how often guys like Dan Snyder and Jerry Jones get so much scorn while we ignore guys like the Bidwells and Browns that have run the Cardinals and Bengals into the ground for decades before finally showing signs of life these past few years. I tend to agree that it's best for owners to stay in the background and let actual football people run their teams, but it is their franchise and I can't really blame them for being super fans when they've invested so much money year in and year out. I'm sure it drives their fans nuts but at least they are trying to win - however misguided it may be.

Meh.  Zorn was a horrible coach and nearly ruinded Joe Flacco after tainting Jason Campbell.  Both were overcoached imo and lost their instinct and playmaking on the field, instead developing a fear of making the wrong decision.  The result was a lot of quick checkdowns, poor pocket escape ability and total inability to pick up the blitz.

It's probably not a coincidence that Campbell is now doing better a few years removed, and Flacco is doing much, MUCH better with a SB ring to boot.

I've always found it amazing that the Redskins get otherwise great coaches (Norv Turner, Marty Schottenheimer, Joe Gibbs, Shanahan) who were/are/eventually became PHENOMINAL elsewhere but with the redskins sucked MAJOR ass.

And I blame Snyder.

I asked a friend about that and his reply was two words: "K Street".

(For those unfamiliar, K Street is DC slang for the lobbying industry, which used to be largely based there. The top lobbyists will happily pay high prices for hospitality suites to host people they want to influence, and lesser advocates will stump up for good seats.)

2013-12-08 08:29:55 PM
FTFA: Shanahan privately told people close to him that he felt Snyder's behavior with regard to Griffin was a "complete farce."

Apparently, the words "privately" and "people close to him" mean something completely different from what I've always believed them to mean. If I were Shanahan, I'd be looking for some new people to be close to -- ones that can actually be trusted with a confidence.

Either that or Shanahan himself is the source, as is usually the case when newspapers write "sources close to X" or "people familiar with the circumstances".

By the 4th quarter the stadium was nearly empty.  I don't think it's ever been that bad in the Snyder era, not even in preseason.  The weather surely had something to do with it but fans in DC vote with their feet.  If a team isn't going places, PFFFFT see ya.

Virginia and Maryland just wrapped up their respective state high school football championships. I'm sure a talented high school coach who's not doing anything else could be found to fill in for a few weeks.

Tackling doesn't get you on ESPN highlights. Only BIG HITS!!!! do. And BIG HITS!!!! usually means going full bore into someone leading with your shoulder, which means you can wrap the guy up. Which usually means the 4 other times you try the BIG HITS!!!! tackle, the guy with ball just bounces off you and continues running.

But that fifth time, when you do knock him down...that's when ESPN is slobbering all over you, calling you a playmaker.

Death Eats a Cracker: Superb Owls. Bwahahaha!! Best typo ever.

Probably not a typo.  A few years ago the league was aggressively protecting its trademark and wanted restaurants and bars to buy permission to use the Super Bowl to promote business.  An enterprising and cheap bar owner put a top hat and monacle on an owl, inviting patrons to come and celebrate the Superb Owl.
