If we keep doing this, how are we going to know who the real psycho kids are? Aren't we just teaching them to use the element of surprise?

If I had been born a few decades later, I think I would've been suspended ten times over when I was in school. We could get away with just about anything back then.

Reminds me of my time in kindergarten/ 1st grade, and we played He-Man at lunch time, girls be damned. Lots of fun, but the ringleaders thought I should make a suit out of tinfoil to play Ram-Man while we all played

I remember in 2nd grade bringing a crochet hook and a hat I was working on to school. I can't even imagine what would happen today. . .

Hey man, I'm a libtard and I want nothing to do with this bullshiat.

I'm pretty sure we were allowed to have toy guns when we were out on recess.

Please remember that most of this is because the schools can no longer discipline anyone for anything without a lawsuit appearing. SO, they had to enact these draconian measures to protect themselves. Although I see litigation as they great equalizer, it is the abuse of that very thought that has created the situation we are in nowadays. Well, that and the fact that our society has morphed into nothing more than greedy vultures which exists because big business has taught the people that greed and destroying anything that gets in the way of that greed is perfectly normal and to be commended.

But, thats another story.

2013-12-07 09:27:31 PM
What is puzzling me is the use "firearm" for an imaginary bow & arrow that by it's definition predated firearms.

Schools are filled with dumbasses... no spark, no fire, no boomy.

stuffy: A Bow is now a firearm? School administrators are getting stuppder by the second.

A bow is pretty much equally dangerous for the same reasons, and people doing stupid things with them injure themselves and each other at pretty much the same rate and severity.  I mean, you wouldn't  thinkthat people would do things like turn around with a drawn bow in hand and shoot it accidentally in the wrong direction while talking to someone, but I've seen people do exactly that even at the damned firing range.

That said, an  imaginary bow is also equally dangerous to an  imaginary handgun, that is to say not even slightly in any way.

THIS. Being in elementary school in the early '80s, we got away with soooooooo much stuff. I know I would've been expelled, put on a habitual offenders list, and probably forced to undergo sensitivity training.

If I were his mother, I'd tell him that the school was being ridiculous and that he's not being punished, but just don't do it again because the school is stupid. I'd let him treat the day as a normal day off at home. Fark the administration.

I might also wonder why his idol is a female character. That's how I was while growing up, too, and I ended up male-to-female transgender.

I don't see why. The first paragraph is part of the discussion already, since most of agree on how retarded the district administration is acting here, given that no threat was implied by the child.

The second paragraph was not me bringing something random into this suddenly - the second post on the thread already brought up the transgender angle to this.

That's an interesting angle.  Maybe that is the case with this kid.  Or, maybe gender norms are changing, so that a boy is "allowed" to identify with a heroic woman, but is identifying with the "hero" aspect rather than the "woman" aspect.

Time will tell.

Johnny Jones, 10, was reportedly suspended from South Eastern Middle School in Fawn Grove, Pa. for "shooting" an imaginary arrow at a classmate.

... the fifth grader was told he violated the school's zero tolerance policy on weapons when he drew back the strings of an imaginary bow and "shot" an imaginary arrow at a buddy.

That's when an unidentified girl in the class told the teacher, who referred the incident to the principal, claiming that "firearms" had been involved.
Jones was allegedly suspended for one day and threatened with expulsion for "making a threat" to another student using a "replica or representation of a firearm".

My idols were Robin Hood, Captain Picard, and Leonardo (From teenage mutant ninja turtles) and I'm happily female and hetero.

Why the hell shouldn't his idol be a female character? Are they not as worthy as men for some reason? Why should liking a character of the opposite sex/gender automatically call into question someone else's gender/sexuality?

Can't you like someone for the content of the character they display? Strength, compassion, justice, love...why the HELL should those characteristics EVER be consigned to a gender or sexuality?!

If we as a society can not appreciate those qualities outside of someone's physical/gentic characteristics we have farking FAILED as a culture.

Kids can be very sensitive to characters' gender. It isn't uncommon for a little girl to be more interested in a story about a girl/woman, or to be annoyed that there aren't any girls in a book even if she likes the story. It just inherently adds interest for them, aids in identifying with the character. There's nothing *wrong* with this kid playing a feminine character, and I don't think it says anything about his sexuality, and I wouldn't have said anything about it in the first place, but in response to your post I just want to point out that kids tend to care about this whether parent/society wants them to or not.

And it isn't about assigning heroism to a gender, it is about identifying more with some heroes than others -- like Hermione rather than Harry Potter, or Wonder Woman rather than Batman. Until recently, the girl selection was very limited (Robin Hood and Maid Marion are NOT equivalent, for example; a lot of the popular shows/movies were sausagefests with a token female presence) so girls had more reason to identify across the gender gap than boys did, so we're more used to it in that direction. (I haven't read the Hunger Games books but it may be that the reverse is in play, i.e. that series just doesn't have a masculine character who's as cool as Katniss.)

I believe I have related this story on Fark previously; it goes like this: I used to work with a lady who had a gay son. One day we were talking about our kids losing teeth. She said that when her boy was about five he fell off the back of a chair he was balancing on - pretending to fly, because he was Supergirl. Then she said, "I should have known then."

/ for the record, I agree with the first part of your post.

When your elections for school board or trustee come up, and any of the candidates support zero tolerance, then, you  know that person is a total idiot and should not have anything to do with education.

Get involved.

Do not let these politically correct, paranoid scaredy-cats get any power at all.

Do it for the kids.

cuzsis: It's simply something I would do a quick check on to see whether something is there, then move on. Most likely, it is exactly as you say, and you are right, there is nothing wrong with it. All I'm saying is that in a small number of cases, it does happen.

Society places stronger taboos on males acting female than the inverse, which is obvious to us all. When someone male acts overlty feminine *despite* this, that in itself can be a sign of issues. I'm not saying that that's how things should be, just how they are.
