The trick is to smack it on the table *before* you unwrap the foil.

Bananas are easier to peel if you pop off the black spot on the bottom and go from there instead of hoping your rip the stem just so, and I think for apples you can eat the core.

And by wrong we mean morally abhorrent.  How dare you defile this citrus with your impure consumptive ways! As the wise Weird Al once said Just Eat It. Eat it. Eat it.

That there is an orange ruff.  You drape it on top of a duck and pin down the ends 30 minutes before the end of cooking time.

I never had an issue peeling a banana from the stem.

And as for eating an apple core, well I can eat the fat and gristle from a steak too, but I'm not that desperate.

/I'm going to try the orange thing right now though.

I tried this method at work the other day, no quicker/easier than normal peeling, and because you've cut into it, you now have orange juice leaking onto your hands when you pull out wedges.

Huh, I didn't know opening via stem was difficult. And the core doesn't taste as good, and has seeds. I'm good.

I'm not eating the goddamn core!  Do I want an apple tree growing inside of me?  HELL NO!

/also, now I need a utensil to eat an orange instead of just peeling it with my fingers?

Because mandarins are so hard to peel, right? The skin usually comes off in one piece. No knife to wash.

Look at how pissy you two are getting over people eating things in ways different than how you would eat things.

But monkeys peel them from the other side! And everyone knows that monkeys are more intelligent than humans.

So the easier way than just peeling it is to go get out a knife that I'll have to wash? Doesn't sound better to me.

I like how so many Farkers think an objection to saying it's "easier" to peel a banana from the end is to respond that they never had trouble peeling one from the stem.

(For those unversed in logic, there's no implication of "hard" when you say something's easier done another way)

So, er, FTFM

Next up: pears.

Hold them by the handle (the tapering end) and eat them from the bottom down. That way you hardly even notice the core and they don't drip so much juice. Same rule as for apples. Economical and easier.

As for bananas, it's not that the apes have more intelligence than us. They just have a lot more experience eating bananas and other tropical fruit.

Dragon fruit: The first rule of dragon fruit is don't eat dragon fruit. They look great but they are bland and very expensive. Use them for fancy fruit bowls but just throw them away when the rest of the fruit is gone.

You can eat the garnish if you like. It looks like you didn't get enough to eat but they're usually very healthy things like parsley or lemon.

Yes. A better reason is that it's not actually easier to peel it from the bottom.

And any method of eating a mandarin that requires a knife is not "better".

2013-12-07 01:10:12 PM
Doing it the neat and easy way is a form of evolution. In some ways, apes are quite evolved and well-adapted. For example, they are well-adapted to eating fruit without a fruit knife and fork or spoon. (They eat naked.)

It really doesn't make much of a difference, actually.  If you peel from the end, you're less likely to get the phloem (strings) sticking to the fruit, but other than that, it's about the same.

One benefit of peeling from the end is when you're using a whole bunch of bananas at once (e.g. making banana bread or something), because you can leave the stems attached to the bunch and throw them all in the compost/garbage at once.

Not to mention the seeds have trace amounts of arsenic.  Trace amounts, yes, but why ingest even that if you don't need to?

I sincerely doubt that.  Once a banana has been eaten by a human, apes and monkeys are unlikely to be interested in eating it afterwards.
