It must suck to not be able to play so many great exclusives. I'll live stream Last of Us, Uncharted and Red Dead Redemption so you don't feel like your missing out. Then I'll go play BF4 on PC.

Not one of the games you mentioned are appealing to me.

Then you missed out on some of the best games of the previous generation. Not sure what games you do like but it is apparently not games that get good reviews and win Game of the Year.

Looking at lists of GOTY for the last few years, it would seem to disagree with you.  Most of them are on PC or Wii.  Many are cross-platform.  You simply mention 1 or 2 exceptions to the rule.

Some examples:

Super Mario Galaxy 2
Skyward Sword
Animal Crossing New Leaf
Dragon Quest IX
Skyrim
Portal 2
Mass Effect
Xenoblade Chronicles
Etc

Looking at metacritic games above 90 there are over 2 dozen games not available on PC. Like I said if you just want something to play sure stick with PC. If you really enjoy video games you should have all three major platforms.

I just saw that TFA says that Pikmin is "absent". Pikmin 3 doesn't count?

Stopped reading right there, because everything after it is worthless. Analyzing the habits of the vocal minority of narcissists isn't going to get you any meaningful data except the habits of vocal minority narcissists.

jonny_q: Meanwhile, I have a WiiU and I will definitely get my money's worth out of first-party games. I'm not really interested in the new systems yet. Maybe I will later. All the good stuff I want to play is on Steam. Wii U is probably still going to be the best party game system just like the Wii was.

Agreed. The WiiU we know will have at least two good Mario games, at least two more Super Mario games (the 2d version), a Zelda game, a Metroid game, Smash Bros., probably some relaunch of a classic Nintendo title I didn't even know I wanted but will enjoy greatly, and will likely have a few third-party gems, plus some good WiiWare games.

For 299$ that's more than enough for me to buy a system for. System lasts for 4 years that's about 80$ a year, those games carry me for 2-3 months each (SMash Bros. more like 6), that's a perfectly fine investment. All of that I'm still under the XBO's intital cost.

I have my big gaming rig PC for shooters, MMOs and other kind of games. I just want to be entertained and the WiiU will fit into my life much better than Sony or MS'  systems.

It's probably not Nintendo's dreamcast. It's also probably not its Playstation. It will work for them. Honestly, if I was Nintendo, I would be working on having the next next gen out in 3/3.5 years. By the time the big guys get in a groove I'd like to see Nintendo with new hardware on the horizon.

That would be smart.

If they kept all the peripherals for the next one it would be pretty cheap too, relatively.

Still annoyed xbox made me upgrade controllers. Shouldn't we be past simply adding a couple buttons? I don't even want as many as the have sometimes :)

/nunchuck for life imo.

Wii U for Nintendo games, PC for everything else.

Most Sony or Microsoft exclusives I can play for an hour or two at a friend's house and that's all I need to satisfy my curiosity.

I had a blast with the Wii U at launch.  Played it more int two weeks than I did an entire year with my 360 (which has now been sold because it was lame).  I'll pick up Mario 3D for Christmas and then look forward to Mario Kart and Smash Bros next year.

Why do people feel that graphics are what makes a game great?  Is that why Donkey Kong, Space Invaders, Asteroids, Centipede, Burgertime, the original Super Mario Bros and Legend of Zelda are still in the publics mind...because they are so graphically beautiful???  No.  It's because they are fun.  That's what makes a game legendary.  Who cares how many it's sold or what ratings some website gave it.  It's all about the fun factor.

I agree, but I disagree that they should shorten this generation's cycle. They should focus hard on selling this cycle. They need to ramp up sales and market better than they have so far. We agree that it's fine for them to have games better than last gen, but less powerful than PS4 and XBone. So really their failure has been in marketing and they're already losing developer support because of it.

So, I say keep the current system and improve the marketing. If they do anything with hardware, I would like to see an updated Wii remote that's more like the PS Move - put the usb sensor on top of the TV and make it detect the front end of the remote. The current system works the other way around - the 'sensor bar' is just IR LED lights and the sensor is in the Wiimote. The Wiimote now is fairly accurate, but not really, and it's laggy. Make it a pixel-perfect light gun, make Duck Hunt 2 and those will sell. If that make it even better for FPSs, that would be a lot of fun.

just lower the price

Sony threw a lot of money at the PS3 too - marketing, big budget innovative exclusive games, improved PSN, bringing back rumble, adding trophies, etc.

none of it resulted in a sales uptick... but what did result in a swing of sales in Sony's favor? revision 2 hardware + price cut, which the PS3 is still riding on to this day

obviously Nintendo hasn't hit the sweet spot in terms of price, i think $249 would go a long way of making people think about it more

For my son this xmas... $200 chromebook with 4gb RAM, crouton->ubuntu, Minecraft, Steam for Linux. Terraria looks like it needs some wrangling to run on Linux, but Don't Starve has a Linux client, and I will get us a couple copies of Starbound at some point in the future.

If there's a NEW  Zelda title on WiiU, then the discussion about getting that system will begin, but not until that time.
