I immediately thought the headline was talking about Mario going to different platforms. Glad I was wrong on that.

Aye, I have to admit I played a bit of the Wii at my friends house.  Still prefer an actual gaming machine with great graphics myself rather than the casual gaming.

I'd just like to remind you that this in itself is not a bad thing.  Want bigger, better games?  You need casuals buying games as well.  That's how companies can take chances on games which are unlikely to make a profit in the first place, which can then be used as a testing ground for the games which potentially become established series.  All the issues in console and computer video games have been caused by the erosion of that contract, and instead of buying the portable or licensed games that subsidized the shiat that you and me like, that money now goes to companies which are exclusively dedicated to the lowest common denominator, i.e. Zynga and King.  The issue is that it was clear the Wii was a bubble waiting to happen, and once the mobile phone games became big, there was no way those companies could keep upping the budgets for the games.

Either which way, the Wii U is by-far the most appealing game console right now (Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, Pikmin 3, The Wonderful 101, Super Mario 3D World) and if I had the money, I would have already gotten one of those things.  I really, really want this thing to do well.  Don't care what the scrubs say, that touchscreen did the DS wonders and it still has fantastic potential.  Give me my console Advance Wars game already, please.

The biggest factor against the ps4 and xbox right now is supply.  Both are obviously in short supply, due to the various launches that ether just happened, or are fixing to happen int he next few months.

What is working against nintendo right now is well, there is little reason to run out and buy one outside mario 3d world, which is keeping them from really capitalizing on the supply woes of their rivals.

I can tell you haven't seen a WiiU in action, then. It's better graphically than a 360. I had my doubts until my buddy got one. The games are nothing short of gorgeous, and the gameplay is fantastic. They even have a new controller for it that's similar to a 360 controller, and is responsive and comfortable.

Not really.  Most third party developers have completely stopped developing for it, due to poor sales of both the console and first batch of games they made for it.

The WiiU really is starting to look like Nintendo's Dreamcast, IMHO.

There's also virtually no lag when using the controller as the main display. I think someone even proved it's even more responsive than most TVs.

I'm going to get a Wii U ... eventually. But I really can't see myself getting one of the other consoles. I just softmodded my Wii because the disc tray broke, again, and the kids are playing SSBB on it right now. It's hella fun.

I will admit that I have not seen the WiiU in action.

I stated out with the NES and then got the SNES as well as an N64, even had a gamecube at one time.  As well as Atari 2600 and 7800, Dreamcast, Playstation 1 and 2 and 3, xbox, xbox360,

Really I try not to play favorites as I consider myself a gamer.  As the generations have improved with each cycle however it seems to me Nintendo has been stuck in the past.  Don't get my wrong that is not a bad thing.  They have had a great business model and knows what works for them.  Plus they did re-invent motion gaming with the Wii.  Just not a big fan of the games you can get on their next gen system.

If it is as good as you say it is though I might have to give it a try.

i'm not even sure all of the wii audience moved on to facebook or mobile games... the wii literally was lightning in a bottle, and lots of people casual or hardcore bought it regardless of how long they used it

Looking at lists of GOTY for the last few years, it would seem to disagree with you.  Most of them are on PC or Wii.  Many are cross-platform.  You simply mention 1 or 2 exceptions to the rule.

Some examples:

Super Mario Galaxy 2
Skyward Sword
Animal Crossing New Leaf
Dragon Quest IX
Skyrim
Portal 2
Mass Effect
Xenoblade Chronicles
Etc

I'm curious.  Are kids really into wanting a PS4 or X-Bone?  Because my 11 year old (the target market demographic) really loves video games.  But he's all about IOS games and Minecraft.  He hasn't asked for either console.  Well, he did make rumblings about wanting a WiiU but there was absolutely no passion behind the request.

Seems like these hardcore systems are starting to appeal to a smaller and smaller demographic.  The broader buying public doesn't want to invest that much money in a behemoth console system anymore.  Not when you can play quick games on so many other platforms.

It's way too early to say that.  Right now, libraries are limited, as is stock.  As the library grows, so does the consoles appeal to others.  Combine that with an ever falling price, and you shouldn't expect to see a lot of mainstream adoption for at least another year or two.

Mobile, well, sucks for gaming, to be honest.  Even still, the most casual gamers are indeed just going to look tot heir tablets or fcaebook, etc for their gaming.  This doesn't so much hurt Ms or sony, who don't bank too much on those casuals, but it does devastate Nintendo's userbase from the wii era.

I have seen some exceptions to this though.  Both my sister and mother expressed interest in buying a ps4 after watching me play mine at thanksgiving in my moms case, or reading about it online in my sisters.  Neither had ever shown any interest in games in decades, if ever.  They loved the pretty visuals and the ability to watch movies/stream netflix and such.

Told both to wait a while for something that interested them to play, and perhaps a price reduction.

Sega was already bleeding money by the time the Dreamcast was released. The Saturn had bombed before the Dreamcast. The 32x had bombed before that. And the Sega CD had bombed before that. Nintendo's current situation isn't analogous to Sega's old problems at all. The 3DS sales alone could propr Nintendo up, even if they didn't have gigantic stacks of cash stored away already (keeping them far into the black), which they do.

I think Infamous 1 is free on the PSN right now (to subscribers, obviously). It can be had for very cheap. I haven't played prototype yet, but Infamous was pretty fun, I'd totally recommend it.

Though if you get your rocks off on 'hard' games, not sure how hard it is or if it's got a difficulty slider. I was drunk when I played it.

My GF has a 12yo and a 13yo. They asked for a PS3, and they were kinda meh about it.

Meanwhile, I have a WiiU and I will definitely get my money's worth out of first-party games. I'm not really interested in the new systems yet. Maybe I will later. All the good stuff I want to play is on Steam. Wii U is probably still going to be the best party game system just like the Wii was.

This gen of systems will be the first gen of systems where I don't buy a nintendo product.  Nintendo burned us with the Wii.
