kukukupo: Put me in the 'Games were better back then' crowd.

Sadly, it is true.  I can count on my two hands the games I've played and enjoyed in the last 10 years or so (especially since consoles moved to disks.  I still don't understand how people put up with LOAD times!).  Pretty much every one has been on PC.

There are at lest a few dozen games I regularly play from the NES / SNES era - and with fan translations, I can go back and play games that were never released in the US.

I'm also in this category. And I think it's less about the game quality and more about the fact that we played these games in our formative years. Games for me is like music for other people. For many, the music of their teens was perfect and nothing can top it; for me, the games I played in my teens and early 20's are untouchable by modern games.

And I know that my belief in the superiority of these games is nostalgia, because earlier this year I played Final Fantasy VI (or III from the SNES days) for the first time. Even though it was a contemporary of Chrono Trigger and clearly one of the best games ever made of that era, I don't have the same attachment to it that I do for Chrono Trigger, which I played when it came out and will love to my dying day. For me, Final Fantasy VI is a recognizably excellent game, but because I didn't play it in my youth, I'm not as charmed by it.

When I replay older games, they take me back to the time when I first played them, and it reminds me of how I felt when I first beheld those amazing 8 and 16 bit graphics. It reminds me of playing games with my friends for hours on end because we were 8 and had no other responsibilities.

Carth: At this point in the lifecycle there is no reason for PC gamers to pick up a cheap PS3 to play all the exclusives they missed. If you have a nice PC and a backlogged PS3 buy a new console in 2-3 years when the prices drop.

Which is exactly what I did. I've got a great laptop that meets my PC gaming needs quite well, and with Humble Bundle, GOG, and Steam, I already have more PC games than I'll ever play in my lifetime. (So why do I keep buying more?) I finaly picked up a PS3 this year and I now have several years' worth of great games available at very good prices. So I may not ever be current when it comes to the latest games, but I'm having fun.

I feel sorry for people who feel like they need a restrictive definition of a "Real Gamer."  They don't realize it, but they are ruining their own fun by putting restrictions on what counts as fun. For me, a "real gamer" games on whatever the hell they want to game on.

Bukharin: Yeah, ever since Sega farked me over with the Sega CD/32X bullshiat, I vowed to never console again.

You're telling me ... imagine what it was like to work for Sega. And it only got worse with the Saturn.

But they somehow pulled a rabbit out of their hat with the Dreamcast, the most wonderful system ever to work for ... but it was too late.

Carth: Mugato: Carth: PC only gamers are by far the most annoying. They think missing out on exclusives because they spent $1000 on a PC but won't drop an additional $200 on a console makes them more hardcore or elite

Well I'm not taking sides here because that would be stupid but since consoles cost $ 500 now and you can get a decent PC for that much, that actually does other things than play games and access the web, I guess it depends on what you're looking to do.

I don't think you can build a PC for $400 that performs as good as the PC4.

At this point in the lifecycle there is no reason for PC gamers to pick up a cheap PS3 to play all the exclusives they missed. If you have a nice PC and a backlogged PS3 buy a new console in 2-3 years when the prices drop.

Actually you just drop a $250 graphics card into the computer you already have. So PC gaming costs HALF what a console does.

And FYI - I can listen to your namesake whine right now on my latest computer. You are one soon-to-arrive RROD from never hearing him and his trust issues again.

I don't really understand people who want to make gaming either or things all the time.  You like PC only?  Great for you.  You're loyal to your PS or Xbox?  Awesome.  Some of us play on multiple platforms because we like playing different games on different machines or because some games are exclusives.  I don't know why people feel superior because they play exclusively on the PC or whatever.  It's like people who feel superior because they only watch TV on Netflix or by illegally downloading it instead of owning a tv.

Also, I will agree with the person who said you only think older games are superior due to nostalgia.  We all do this with something at some point I suppose.  I know I will probably always think Everquest was the best MMO ever made because it was the first one I played.  It doesn't really make it objectively the case though (just to me).  To say that no good games have come out in 10-20 years is ridiculous and just shows that you aren't really aware of what games are out there (or perhaps you have very particular taste).  Of course this all goes back to the definition of "good" which is entirely subjective.

I decided to get a classic console and build a collection, I've lost interest in most new games. It was going to be an SNES but finding a good one became problematic, most of them have turned piss yellow and the plastic so brittle you can shatter it in your hands. The SNES mini seems to hold up much better but then I found a pristine Atari 2600 light sixer. That was the console I had as a kid (and later a ColecoVision) and the carts for it are dirt cheap. Plus I've found I have a lot more fun playing those old games so I'm building a 2600 collection now. I guess that puts me in the "games were better back then" crowd.

I still prefer SNES over all else though, but emulation is good enough for that. Might get a Raspberry Pi or Ouya someday, install a bunch of emulators on it and turn it into an ultimate classic gaming console.

Hanging out with the woman who doesn't realize her mic is on and carries on to her boyfriend or whoever for an hour during a game that really doesn't require chat.

/I've heard some interesting conversations coming through my tv speakers.

Or how about the people who didn't know the kinect recorded them while playing Uno on Xbox Live or worse the ones who did and decided to turn it into penis roulette.

Oh yeah, I can't imagine trying to get all of them. I'm not really a completionist though so I'll be happy with just the one console and a collection of the better games. Different variations and junk like Custer's Revenge I can do without. I actually still had a half dozen of my old carts. I have no idea what ever happened to my original 2600 but it was a 4 switch "Vader" model.

Yah I kind of hate parents who let their kids play online games.  I know the parents think it's harmless fun and why shouldn't kids be allowed to play a video game like anyone else, but adult themed games are inappropriate for children.  Also, children tend to behave really badly in online games (not to imply that adults don't as well).  I have not heard such an extreme response, but I definitely heard some kids who sound like they're 9 or 10 when I used to play L4D.  The thing is that if you've played L4D you would know how incredibly bad it would be to randomly get matched up with a child and it inevitably goes terribly as they don't have a sense of organization, teamwork, etc. Although the funniest are the kids in MMO's who don't realize how badly they embarrass themselves with their behavior or the things they say.  I'm not sure I'd want my child to be exposed the shennanigans that go on in online games or to develop those habits so early.  It seems like it's setting your kid up to fail in life.

1. The slideshow.
2. A Townhall or American Thinker piece.
3. A stupid, useless list.

Seriously, this list sucks, the examples are weak, and there are groups left out, since I'm not really anyone on that list either. I hardly ever play online, when I do, it's for fun, I understand the memes, but don't go around spouting them, I have no "brand loyalty", because I don't play consoles, I enjoy old games from back in the day, but don't dwell on them, etc...

The gamers I find the most annoying are the ones who have no other life and spend far too much energy chastising my lame equipment because I haven't spent ten hours a day farming for gear.

I consider "casual" a compliment.  It means I have a real life.  It means I get to see and feel real boobies instead of running around ganking n00bs.

I recently decided to give Skyrim a whirl and I finally got to hear one of the guards talk about getting an arrow to the knee. It's cute and all but its not the line that I think is funny. I don't really think i'm any of these.

While I love old games, and have collections of SNES, NES, Gameboy, ect, I dont' hump those systems too hard, because they had lots of short comings. Lots of NES shovelware that was "Nintendo Hard" just to extend it out, for instance.

I don't nitpick things too hard.

I'm not intently loyal to one brand - a slight preference toward Nintendo but I have found things on every console I love.

I guess I'm probably mostly an MMO gamer. But I don't run into anything that bad on that MMO hell scale. I run a problem free, drama free WoW guild, I have an excellent rep, I have plenty of gold earned by not bothering other people, Maybe the closest is Alt-aholic, but honestly I still have a definitive main.

mommatoldme: I'm the one who doesn't hav a mic...is that wrong?

I used to sort of think so.  Team games are really enhanced by good communication.

However.  By a vast majority(platform dependant of course), assholes dominate the mics on console games.

Above and beyond the general annoying ness of kids, music players, screamers and insulters, there are a few other sorts worth mentioning.

Impersonating a Superior Officer.  These are of all ages and voice types, but they all share one problem, attempting to tell everyone else what strategy and goals they "should" be working towards, issuing commands like they're top brass in a military campaign.
Subtype: Missplaced MMO tank who misses his healer/buffer:(in a FPS game)  Why weren't you supporting me?  Why didn't you have my back? Why did you let that guy sneak up on me?  Why did you let him get my carepackage? etc

Social Butterflies:  Incessantly talk to other people in real life or on the phone with the mic turned on.
Sub-type:  People who insist on small talk with other gamers.  Where you from?  What (irrelevant) sports team do you watch.  Man, I just got fired again? Have you played (irrelevant)game yet?

Most games are pretty simple to play, a smart player can fit in and be a team-member when needed.  No need for commands and getting super serious.  There's a sweet spot between that and someone obviously out to meet friends in a series of sad and desperate attempts who all but ignores the actual game.

Unfortunately, that spot has been overwhelmed and drowned out by the above types.

I had to set my console settings to "friends only".

What a crap list. Hey, young lady: The NES games worked perfectly back in the 80s..because they were new.

Also, they are better than the games offered now. Hell, there's HUGE secrets still left to be revealed in some of the biggest games ever which gave rise to the tripe you think is so great.

I'm not as offended because she was ripping on my "niche" but because she's painfully ignorant regarding video game history.

WhyteRaven74: The list sorta references gamers who defend game studios whenever it's pointed out they're not doing much in the way of offering variety or new ideas.

6 of one, half a dozen of the other.

Some studio's do just that, or at least try.  Even the CoD/halo developers try to be innovative.

But the industry at large isn't very good at it.  Too many CEO's micromanaging, and too many half-brained "artists", too many writers that could have been a standin for the writing board on "Lost"(weird for weird's sake, dissonance filled rubbish) not enough of that nice level headed gamer with a fresh idea with the constitution and creativity to flesh it out.  Indy games have some focus in that area, but lack of funding and manpower to do much more than create what amounts to a heady/dreamlike flash game / sidescroller type of game.

There is no coherent "vision" that whole team's can get around and produce quality instead of gimmicky.  No need to with CoD and the like selling millions/billions of copies.  Valve does some good work, as does Bethesda, but they're....how do I put it...so full of depth or uniqueness that they're kind of hard to get into sometimes.
Half life is cool, but coming out so far apart...I never played the original Half Life.  Played the hell out of 2 though, because it was fun enough, not because I understood what the fark was going on.  Same with Skyrim/Fallout.  So much immersion, they didn't parse it well so that you could go only as deep as you wanted.  Lots of references that don't make any sense, long lost kingdoms to shadowy conspiracies you've never heard of.

There's still a hole between "sandbox with no real goals" and playing what amounts to a scripted film of uninteresting characters.  Sometimes, much as I loathe it, I'd rather just watch Pride and Prejudice.

Few developers excel in that area.  Bungie tries, may prove it with Destiny(of course, it's easy to create a world with the first game, not so much giving it a worthy successor).  There's a mech game coming out that sounds somewhat fun but I cannot recall the name.(you can get out of your mech and hijack others and such things....if that's enough to ring a bell).
