Serious question, why do so many people listen to this person? He obviously has more listeners than the lunatic fringe fundamentalist Tea Baggers. He has no qualifications educationally that I know of. I really only know about him because of stories on  this site so WTF?

I think he was doing his schtick even before Hannity got popular, so many of his listeners/viewers came to him early and stuck around.  I know I used to listen to him from time to time back in the late 90s and early 00's (I torture myself from time to time by listening to the right-wing whack-jobs, just to keep up with their latest derp) and his rhetoric is often couched in at least a nominal religious message, so I think that appeals to some people too. Rush and Hannity and Jones and Savage don't really do that as explicitly as Beck does.

Yes, Glenn Beck IS a clueless, anti-american fark who is the antithesis of everything American culture and principles ideally stand for.

C'mon y'all, this one's so easy you don't even have to cheat off your neighbor's test.

Beck is the modern version of the old time tent revivalists. Same shtick, just modern. Get the rubes all riled up, profit, the end. No one will likely ever know how truly he believes in what he preaches, and it doesn't matter. Do you believe Paul McCartney still wants to hold your hand? He's found a cash machine and he just keeps pressing the Yes Please button.

Yes, the Founders would absolutely love them some Beckerized Tea Party, you betcha.

Except for that whole "factions are the enemy of the republic" (Federalist #10; John Jay absolutely was a Founding Father) thing, the whole "hang together, else we hang separately" thing, his various misunderstandings of economics, the "religious freedom" thing (they'd probably also raise their eyebrows a touch at the "Jesus was in America with the Natives" thing), and the "no taxes on anything evar" thing (the Founders were big fans of consumption taxes on luxury goods, specifically because they impacted richer folks more).

2013-12-06 06:03:55 PM
Did the Founders also predict what Glenn Beck did in 1990?

2013-12-06 06:04:45 PM
Glenn Beck may in fact be right.  It is a long shot, but by serving as an example of everything that is wrong with this country, he and his followers may prevent their ilk or those close to it from seeing any office from here on out.

Tell me again, how the United States is better off with state mental institutions closed?

'Cause nut-baggery like this is grounds for involuntary commitment.

I've taken the time to read the personal letters of Jefferson, Adams, etc.

The TL:DR version: No they aren't.  The Founding Fathers would have had Mr Beck flogged.

There are friends and enemies of freedom and prosperity.

You seem to be confused about which side you are on.

Srsly.

2013-12-06 06:13:14 PM
Over the last several months, Glenn Beck has veered back and forth between despondent cries that America is utterly doomed and joyous proclamations that the future is brighter than it has ever been.

A bad sign when it comes to mental state. Really, the longer he draws it out, the worse it's going to be. I just hope it's only a suicide and not a murder/suicide when he finally cracks.

He keeps reminding you that you're correct, that you are one of the privileged.  Then he implies that you are a warrior, that the things you thought were wrong are the enemy, and that the enemy is just waiting to strike.  He tells you that the rest of the world is out to get you, that you can't trust anyone else, especially anything that might not agree with him.  He breeds paranoia, fear, faith, and a sense of self-righteousness in his followers.  So yes, very much like a cult leader.

He's an FM shock jock who has no shame.  He's not crazy, just a humungous asshole who doesn't care what people think of him so long as he's got money.  If that means ruining a whole lot of other people's day, it's all fair to make a buck.  Remember, he had no qualms about making fun of a woman's miscarriage on air - that's not something a crazy person does, that's someone who is willing to weld his moral compass in place because it only gets in the way of his ego.

2013-12-06 06:28:46 PM
Beck is a Mormon, and I can tell you from living in Utah a lot of Mormons believe the founding fathers were inspired directly by god to create the U.S. ( don't talk about them owning slaves, that just confuses them) . They think the constitution is directly inspired by god and should never be changed. ( unless it comes to gay marriage). Then again I like Mormons, however they have so many condridictery beliefs it's amazing.

The first time I saw a Glenn Beck show, he was an equal opportunity commentator.
He dug his claws into everyone.

/my, times have really changed

2013-12-06 06:46:06 PM
Most Glenn Beck listeners would shart their pants if they really know what many of their beloved "Founding Fathers' thought (Alexander Hamilton), compared to the revisionist mythology they've created around them.

2013-12-06 06:51:40 PM
John Adams learned Latin at the age most of us today are still learning the difference between "their" and "there." He entered Harvard at sixteen and was practicing law by his early twenties. He also was able to speak Greek and Hebrew, and he even learned French.

At age nine, more than twenty years before he would author the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson was already studying and speaking Latin, Greek and French. He entered the College of William and Mary by sixteen where he studied mathematics and philosophy, and learned to play the violin in his free time. If he decided to omit from his résumé his writing credentials and the fact he was president, he would still make most modern scholars look like first grade drop outs.

The least educated/enlightened Founding Fathers would consider Glenn Beck and his followers drooling idiots.

Glenn Beck isn't a shock jock anymore. He's a cult leader. He's a televangelist. He preaches the word of the Church of the Founders, holding up the ideas of the Founding Fathers over their ideals and projecting all aspects of goodness onto them while claiming that his people are the only ones who understand them. He is a self-styled prophet of the American Revolution. That's what's terrifying. The tea party might not be viable as a political force, but it's becoming a freaking religion that deifies the idea of following the Founding Fathers as just that: following mindlessly.

Calmamity: "How was he oppressed?"

You see when old white people are mildly inconvenienced and their views publicly mocked they consider it oppression because they lack a frame of reference.
For example:
There's a gun store around here right next to a major interstate that has signs all over their lawn decrying the tyranny of Obama and how his rights are being trampled.  The fact that this man is able to
a) own a seemingly successful business despite aforementioned crippling a tyranny
b) post signs to exhibit his political speech publicly, and not only political speech but active opposition to the current politician in power, and not only that but in full view of a major public thoroughfare
c) face no legal, governmental, or extrajudicial (mob justice, vandalism, protests on his property etc etc) for doing so

All this means is that he is living in a free and relatively safe civil society as our founders intended us to live in.

However in his mind it is tyranny because sometimes not everyone agrees with him all the time on everything.

I hope i have explained this well enough

Glenn Beck's final broadcast (in my dreams):
Good evening. Today is Wednesday, September the 24th, and this is my last broadcast. Yesterday I announced on this program that I was going to commit public suicide, admittedly an act of madness. Well, I'll tell you what happened: I just ran out of bullshiat. Am I still on the air? I really don't know any other way to say it other than I just ran out of bullshiat. Bullshiat is all the reasons we give for living. And if we can't think up any reasons of our own, we always have the God bullshiat. We don't know why we're going through all this pointless pain, humiliation, decays, so there better be someone somewhere who does know. That's the God bullshiat. And then, there's the noble man bullshiat; that man is a noble creature that can order his own world; who needs God? Well, if there's anybody out there that can look around this demented slaughterhouse of a world we live in and tell me that man is a noble creature, believe me: That man is full of bullshiat. I don't have anything going for me. I haven't got any kids. And I was married for thirty-three years of shrill, shrieking fraud. So I don't have any bullshiat left. I just ran out of it, you see.
