Random Area 51 guru question: does anyone know what the circle of blue and black stripes that looks like they're spiraling into a a black hole is?
It's clearly just markings on a tarmac, but is it a turnaround spot for aircraft? Maybe the best place to do donuts in an SR-71?

It's very close to the overpass that appears to go over the long runway, about mid-way between that point and the hangar structure shown in the article's picture at the southeast corner. It's off to the side and at the center of an unconnected "roadway" that looks like it must have gotten torn out at some point..

Probably just a part they stopped using long ago, and anything you see is a mix of something that was torn down and weathered. It doesn't look like anything anyone would dare take off and land on anymore.

But if it is still active, i'd say the circle part leads underground somehow, and that's where craft go to and from the underground. There's nothing else but dirt roads leading to it.

Apparently, the RQ-180 has been in development many years without anybody knowing about it-perhaps as early as 2006.

Hell, at this point Area51 is the best place to develop a spy plane. It's so widely known as a secret base, no one pays any attention to it anymore.

Agreed that whatever it is, it's in disrepair. I'm wondering if they didn't put mobile radar at various positions and use the stationary turnaround spot for testing different angles back in the early days, but the tread seems a little fresh for that..

Our ability to make political and strategic decisions at the very highest levels requires the ability to get the best possible aerial intel from some pretty hairy parts of the world. The 3rd World is rapidly upgrading their AA capabilities, thanks to Russia and the like. As a consequence of that, cutting edge recon drones are actually some of the most defensible projects we have on the books.

Dirt roads leading to it seem fairly fresh, too. Perhaps they're spinning doughnuts there in new fangled land vehicles. Or someone working there simply fashions themselves a drifter, and uses the spot since it's decommissioned. Maybe they even have wild parties there, Mad Max style. Flaming garbage cans and people doing burnouts all over the place. Who knows what goes on in there.

Which now that it's public it probably means it's going to be retired and there's something else that no one knows about under construction or already flying...

Alien Brains

Might be a good band name, I'll put that on the list.

2013-12-06 08:01:40 PM
If you have to announce to the world you have a new super secret spy plane, it's a good bet that the damn thing doesn't work.

2013-12-06 08:19:58 PM
With a picture of an artist's concept of the plane and a Google Earth shot of Area 51 that hasn't been a secret since at least 1969.

I'm still not clear on why people have this idea that Area 51 is some kind of secret facility, or that it's a secret that the Air Force designs, builds and tests secret aircraft there. Anyone with any kind of brain power has known this for decades, and it's not even secret. Hell, in a totally unsecret documentary on the F-117, there's a bit on the development of the SR-71 where they talk about moving it from the Skunk Works to Area 51 for testing, and there on the chalkboard (so you know it was quite a while ago) it says MOVE TO AREA 51 in big white letters. (That was on "Nighthawk: Secrets of Stealth" back when History Channel did real history docs)

And I'm not sure why anyone is amazed that we've got a "new super spy plane" when Aurora has been suspected to be in the works since at least the mid- to late-90's and probably flying since just before they decommissioned the SR-71, by inference if no other reason. It only stands to reason that they wouldn't retire the SR-71 in favor of the less effective U-2 unless there was a better stealth plane ready to go, and Aurora was 100% operational.

But then I remember that people can't do inferential reasoning, and nobody ever watches history documentaries any more.

"New"
So they made this in the 80s, right?

2013-12-06 08:38:16 PM
With a completely wild guess, I'm betting that it looks like this:

i.imgur.com

Which makes sense, because about the only place aircraft can go supersonic is far off the coast of San Diego, who always complains when the Air Force rattles their windows.  And the route they would have to take to get there from Groom Lake is first to Flagstaff, Arizona, then South, generally over the Verde River flight corridor past Phoenix, and then a final jog West over California.  But the aliens are obviously so courteous that they follow FAA flight corridors to avoid interfering with commercial air traffic.

2013-12-06 08:56:15 PM
All this means is...this particular version is now retired. They're using something new.

2013-12-06 09:14:33 PM
This must of come out right after the SR71 retired. Probably used pilots originally.

It looks like an excavation pit.  I bet they have been doing an environmental remediation project there, pulling out contaminated soil to treat it.  The Air Force takes that kind of environmental work pretty seriously, and regularly funds these kinds of cleanup projects on their bases.

It is in the right place (off an abandon taxiway) for it to be a hot-pit refueling area.   The pad to the east looks like it has a small concrete pad on it, that could have been a footing for a tank. Given the nature of the base in question, I bet a lot of exotic (and highly toxic) fuels were used there over the years, and some of that stuff gets spilled, especially in the old days, when spill containment was not a priority.  So years later, when the Air Force is demo'ing the old taxiway, it is the time they would start the clean up operations.

So, it's two generations behind what we are actually using?
