Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't Slick Rick Santorum one of those who worships at the Altar of St Ronald Reagan?   Wasn't Regan vehemently opposed to Mandela and a staunch supporter of the apartheid government, going so far as to veto the South African sanctions law (overridden) that Mandela gave a large part of the credit for ending the apartheid regime?

What an ass.

Oh, and Rick?  Even if your fights were the same, there's a minor difference that you forgot about.

Mandela won.

so, do you give up your soul the minute you join the republican party, or does someone come for it later on?

If there's one thing that Republicans will not tolerate, it's the white man keeping the black man down.

Well he's not into letting everyone, including Blah people get health care, vote, and the other benefits of being citizens of this country, so I'm kinda surprised he said something nice too.

Either choice assumes that they have one to begin with.

Based on the Freeper threads about Mandela's death, never.

"He was a great man! But he was a communist! But I would never attack Nelson Mandela," O'Reilly said

I'll just call him what I consider an epithet. I won't attack the man.

Can we infect Santorum with TB and throw him in a hole for a few decades? I just want to help him be consistent.

The ACA is now as bad as apartheid. Ooookay then.

Only completely delusional people could take Santorum seriously.

I know, it seems like a good idea, but unfortunately being an enormous self-involved shiatstain douchecanoe is not illegal.

I was wondering if I would see that comparison come up.

Wiki link to Anti-Apartheid Act of 1986, which includes Reagan's role:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comprehensive_Anti-Apartheid_Act

Basically, it looks like Reagan wanted a watered down version and implemented watered down sanctions.  Congress unexpectedly passed the Act.  Reagan vetoed it, and his veto was over-ridden, which was a surprise.  Article includes a good quote from Desmond Tutu, who thought that history would view Reagan harshly due to this.  Oh, Bishop Tutu, how you underestimated the right's ability to completely mythify St. Ronnie.

You know how you know Mandela was on the right side of history? The likes of Thatcher, Reagan and Cheney were against him.

Santorum isn't even a blip on the political stage, he's just a Palin like troll.

Now that he's dead.   As this article points out, many conservative "heros" were once active, even paid shills for the Apartheid government, including Williamm F. Buckley, Jessie Helms, Jerry Falwell etc

Mandela reconciled with white people; Obama took their guns, rounded them up into FEMA camps, and forced them to buy health insurance.

He is the least christian conservative Christian in the U.S.  He's as immoral as they come.

Christ, what an unbelievable asshole.

Sick Rick is the average in the mainstream of right wing haters of Mandela. His more famous colleagues are Grover Norquist and Jack Abramoff who both profited from South African pro-apartheid backers.

Then you have Pat Robertson who saw black communists and antizionists under every bed and in every vagina (including his).

There's a reason Mandela had to have special clearance as a reformed terrorist to visit the US until 2008 -- that reason sweet Republican love.

2013-12-06 11:50:26 AM
If you're surprised by this, you haven't been paying attention to politics for a few years, at least.

That's the entire playbook for modern "grassroots" conservatism.  He who gets the most attention for saying the most outrageous thing must be the best.

Well he WAS, very briefly, a member of the communist party, so that alone could be merely a factual statement.  I think the whole statement was Billy O's stumbling inarticulate way of saying "this guy was as far away from me on the political spectrum as possible but he still deserves respect because he was a good man, and why can't you folks in the political world do likewise with your ideological opponents"

but I may be giving him too much credit

This just in: Defense spending doesn't increase the size of government. Also, abortion laws don't control people's lives.

He has a TV show and is not unfamiliar with public speaking.  If he meant to say what you said, he would have.  Instead, he decided to be a total douche.
