How many times do people have to say this :

A DALEK IS NOT A ROBOT !

// It's a living being inside a heavily armored pepper-pot...

Still looking for the "brilliant" poster.

The one in the article kinda sucks.

Personally I think the list is pretty bad

Hal 9000 was a computer.
Agent Smith was a freaking computer program
Tron was technically a program

Locutus of Borg ?  Really?

There are several other that I could argue.

I was expecting something like this. Instead I just got a bunch of pictures of random robots.

The artist can draw better than me, but so can a lot of people.

Agent Smith is software, not hardware. Therefore, not a robot.

2013-12-06 10:08:30 AM
Pity they used the movie version of Marvin and not the TV one. And replicants are not robots, they are genetically engineered lifeforms/people (at least, in the movie).

Robocop is a cyborg. Data and Marvin are androids. Voltron and Gundam are powered battle armor.

He's a Cyborg though, which would also fit the Daleks , as well as Robocop. Problem is, Agent Smith doesn't count as either, as he is just a digital construct that can only exist inside the Matrix. Unless they farked this up in the last 2 movies, they were so bad I can't remember.

it's a cool poster, but labeling it "robots" is off of the mark.

2013-12-06 10:20:01 AM
I think the distinction between androids and robots is close enough, that's just a design issue, but the 'Cyborg' thing, the 'powered battle armor' thing, and the whole 'digital construct' thing(Such as Agent Smith and TRON) aren't robots.

I have to give them credit for some of the additions though, they just need to name the poster better.

I mean, they have Evil Ted and Dot Matrix in the list. Those are ones I wouldn't have expected anyone to remember.

-1 for including that bullshiat "I, Robot" monstrosity.

A Dalek is not a cyborg though. To claim it is, is a bit like claiming a tank driver is a cyborg because they travel around in an armoured mobile machine. About the closest you can get is the Imperial Daleks under the command of Davros who did add cyborg appendages to themselves during the Dalek Civil War, but by the time of the Time War, they were eradicated and Davros was a prisoner to the new Supreme Dalek and Dalek Emperor.

There are enough errors on that poster for everyone to take a swing at.

The Borg weren't robots.

I find that one hard as well. He can drive himself, open and close his doors (iirc) and operate all the add-ons. His ability to physically influence his environment makes him more than an AI placed in a car. In my opinion he would classify as a robot with a car form factor.

I thought the Daleks were pretty much built into their armor, as in they couldn't exist without it, and Davros was the dude who started all of that? Like at this point the armor and the Dalek are almost a single entity?

jolumed78: Agent Smith is software, not hardware. Therefore, not a robot.

Personally, I agree with you completely.  Just the same, there does seem to be a tendency for terms that once referred exclusively to hardware to be increasingly applied to software.  As in, some malware is referred to as 'bots', and some software processes are now 'servers'.

/Things like this poster, and various lists of science fiction and fantasy topics always make me a little sad, because they pretty much inevitably pretend that 'books' never exist.  Everything on the lists has to come from a TV show or a movie, and all of the wonderful contributions from literature might as well have never been.  Granted, when you're compiling a series of images, it's a helluva lot easier to do from TV and movies.  It would be pretty damn hard to come up with pictures of fine literary robots like 'Helen O'Loy', 'R. Daneel Olivaw', 'Jay Score', and oh! so many others!  But someone needs to give a shout out to them, lest they be forgotten.

//Nice to see that Hymie (Get Smart) and Robbie (Forbidden Planet) made it into the comments.  Might I also nominate John Schuck's performance as a Police Robot (Yoyo) in the old sitcom 'Holmes and Yoyo' (from Leonard Stern, of 'Get Smart' fame), and Julie Newmar as experimental Air Force robot AF-709 in the 1964 sitcom 'My Living Doll'.  (Yes, I am that old.)

Robocop, Steve Austin, General Grievous, Jamie Summers and the Borg are actually all cyborgs. Daleks are creatures in an exosuit. Tron and Agent Smith are computer programs. HAL is a computer.

Negatory, Androids are nothing more than human-appearing robots.  Neither term has anything to do with self-will or sentience.

Also, there's no significant difference between KITT and R2-D2 aside from the lack of chairs.
