Two horse race between kanye west and vampire weekend this year.

But grammy noms are notoriously bizarre and generally take into account "entire catalogue" instead of just the year

i guess i'm getting old, because this headline reminded me i had heard quite a bit about this girl being quite the different sound for pop music and had not heard the song yet. i just finished listening to it and i could not tell you a single thing about it, hum a bar of the tune, give you an assessment of its qualities or quote any notable lyric. it might as well not have been playing for all i could get into it. i'm actually a bit afraid of what 'normal' pop music sounds like if this was considered amazing.

The metal nominations will be Black Sabbath "13", Avenged Sevenfold "Hail to the King", Winery Dogs "Winery Dogs ", Stone Sour "House of Gold and Bones pt 2", Motorhead "Aftershock", Megadeth "Supercollider"

/13 wins because they are Sabbath, House is better IMHO.
//Yes technically Winery Dogs aren't "metal" but you know they will end up here.

Context is everything, and you are sorely lacking it in this situation. Go make yourself a playlist of the top 20 pop songs right now and listen to all of them, then come back and tell us which one really stuck out to you.

My kids have a dvd of that old Super Mario Bros. 3 cartoon. There's one episode that revolves around King Koopa kidnapping Milli Vanilli. I'm serious. They did the voices for their cartoon selves, too. At the end of the episode they're doing a concert and the princess is in the audience wearing a Milli Vanilli shirt. Clearly this was before their downfall.

SlothB77: But grammy noms are notoriously bizarre and generally take into account "entire catalogue" instead of just the year

The Grammies do two things different than the Academy Awards that I find really annoying:

1) They award based on popularity. Not quality, not message, not meaning, not "capturing the spirit of the age" or anything like that. Just popularity. Popularity means sales. Not just popularity of the album or single, but popularity of the artist and the artist's ability to make the industry a lot of money (so that's why catalogue/body of work becomes important). That's why U2, Madonna and Jay-Z always win every time they release something (no matter how bad it is). They are the music industry's brand, so they get the favortism. But outside of that, for Best New Artist, whoever made the most money usually wins (not always, but usually).

Now, unlike movies, music albums can remain on the shelves and keep selling for years, and they won't win Grammies until they do. Sometimes they wallow in obscurity for a long time before they get traction. This happened with Guns n Roses' Appetite for Destruction. It was actually released to little fanfare, and it sat in the stores for 10 months before MTV discovered Sweet Child O' Mine and played it to death. Then it shot to mega-platinum a full year after being released, the other songs on the disc became bonafied hits, and a year later the Grammies recognized it. So then you have Slash and Izzy drunk as hell at the 1990 Grammies accepting awards for an album they recorded back in 87 (and they were into their third album at that point).

2) The Grammies award based on genre. Best R&B, Best Pop, Best Rock, Best Dance, Best Hip Hop album, etc... they have like 40 categories, including crap like Folk and Children's Musical. It's like if the Oscars had Best Comedy, Best Sci-Fi, Best Fantasy, Best Drama. Aside from the fact that genrefication is a fuzzy subject in and of itself, it spreads the talent thin and dilutes the quality control. What the Oscars do instead is award based on profession (Best Sound Design, Best Key Grip, Best Catering, whatever), and I think it would be keen to have that for the Grammies: Best Drummer, Best Bassist, Best Sound Mixer/Programmer, etc... because the big difference between the two is that the Oscars, for all their naval-gazing nonsense, at least try to celebrate the people who actually work on the movies, whereas the Grammies seem more focused on celebrating the music industry itself.

The Oscars may have their heads up their asses and only appreciate pretentious arthouse crap, but at least they're trying to be an arbiter of good taste, maturity and quality. We can argue the merits of their efforts, but at least we can take solace in the fact that Adam Sandler will never win an Academy Award. He doesn't make Oscar bait, he just makes money. The Academy is not swayed by money or box office returns (although they may be swayed by other things). The Grammies, on the other hand, are complete total corporate sell-outs. Alvin and the Chipmunks won two Grammies, for farks's sakes.

/stay away from the electronica/dance category

Yes, because people who are already rewarded with fame, lots of groupie sex, and wealth beyond their wildest imaginings NEED yet another pat on the back for their overproduced, under-talented collections of noise.

2013-12-06 08:23:28 PM

Ishkur: 1) They award based on popularity.

I thought that was what the Billboard Awards were for? I never understood that one. "You sold an assload of albums, here's an award!"
