My first thought upon seeing the picture was the Bell 47's used during Korea (or at least; routinely depicted as being used during Korea like in M*A*S*H; I don't know if that was the actual model used in reality).

The book.  The movie is what it is since I saw it first before reading the book.

I REALLy hope reading Ender's Game won't be the same, because that movie was a disapointment too.  I guess it's really my fault for not having an idea of what the stories were really about.

ISTR reading somewhere that such a pod was considered in the 50's for the B58, too, but the idea was dropped before it got anywhere.  Which might have been a good idea in retrospect - the plane had an atrocious safety record, like most 50's military jets...

What a shame. The book (Starship Troopers) was so much better that pathetic caricature that Verhoeven crapped out.

Heathen!

Starship Troopers is one of Heinlein's best books and has a completely serious tone. The movie was a satire mocking government propaganda and the followers thereof during the Vietnam war. They are almost completely unrelated beyond the basic premise of  oo-ra and bugs.

As for Ender's Game, the movie follows the book fairly closely from what I remember, although, as is typical, a great many things were stripped out to shorten the movie to an acceptable length. Personally, I wouldn't have minded sitting there another fifteen or so minutes in the theater just to not have the thing feel so rushed.

I enjoy both for what they are. I also saw the movie before reading the book, but I think the book is a million times better. The movie wasn't originally an adaptation of the book so it only has superficial similarities, but I think it is fun anyway.

They had to leave out almost two thirds of the book by my guess.
Everything about peter and valentine, most of the character building of the other students, most of the battle room, they even truncated the opening and epilogue. Plus the tone wasn't nearly as dark in the movie.

They might have done better to make it a tv series, in retrospect.

As I see it, the helicopter wouldn't be ANYWHERE near as scary as the friggin' Harrier jet. Also, something to keep in mind. Not only do the Apaches fly faster than the Korean choppers did, there's also the very good chance of attacks, since Apaches are primarily seen as an offensive weapons platform. I'd say the choppers in Korea probably onlly had to worry about civilian jackasses taking potshots with their rifle, while the Apache might get mistaken for being an attack helicopter in this role, and get some missiles launched at it/

grabbed it off a GIS.

Some of the Apache models were actually designed to take 2 exterior riders. They have foot holds/handholds for passengers in case one of the helis goes down, the wingman can exfil the pilot and gunner of the crashed bird.

Heres a short vid of a rescue where the gunner strapped himself to the outside after giving up his seat to a wounded soldier.

Ender's game is good as long as you remember they are little kids. It also leads to a good understanding of the character for when you read Speaker for the dead. I will highly suggest Speaker. In my opinion it is better than Game. As for the books after, that is up to you.
