It couldn't have anything to do with taxes and the crazy inflation rate, could it?

Which was, of course, the point of it.

Look, we need the plebe classes in debt up to their eyeballs, surrounded by stuff we can threaten to take away, and hanging on by their fingertips. That's the only way we can stay competitive. If people lose that edge of desperation, we'll have to start treating them like humans, and that just isn't cool.

So $14 to $20 in today's wages, depending on where you live. I'd say here in N. Texas, $16 is about right

dj_bigbird: It couldn't have anything to do with taxes and the crazy inflation rate, could it?

Nope.

It's fact that corporate conglomeration has left few options for workers to find bidders for their skills.

And now these behemoths are skewing the wages by not keeping up with inflation or distributing wealth fairly.

I find it funny to watch the poors fighting for a good deal on Black Friday so they can have one day a year that they don't feel like the dregs of humanity.  They're hilarious. I'm glad CNN runs that shiat on a constant loop.

People are honestly upset that someone wants to make about 12 bucks an hour....

If you have two employees and their wage went from 8 to 10 dollars and that puts you out of business, then there's a strong chance that you're bad at business.

If I could reply to this again.  You would think a good businessman could take advantage of the fact that a shiatload of potential customers now have $100 more in their pocket every week.

Well, then why don't we just raise the minimum wage so they don't need to get on public assistance?

WAHHH YOU ARE DESTROYING THE FREE MARKET AND HURTING THE JOB CREATORS!!!!

That's a point that really needs to be made clear.  The hugely profitable megacorps are currently offloading a good chunk of their personnel costs onto the government.  Raising the minimum wage would allow more people to work full time and not have to take government benefits just to make ends meet.  There's no reason that Walmart and McDonalds should continue to have their payroll expenses subsidized by the taxpayers.

Also, the poverty line figures are ridiculously low.  A family of three is $18,776?  Let's break that down, assuming that's a mother, father, and a kid:

Housing: The cheapest I can find for a 2 bedroom rental here is $400 per month (and I'm surprised it's that cheap) $400x12 = $4,800 so $13,976 left

Utilities: Let's assume $100/month in electricity, $50/month water, $50/month Internet, and $100/month cell service, that covers the bare necessities @ $300 month x 12 months = $3,600 so $10,376 left

Transportation: Let's be generous and pretend this family owns a hand-me-down or paid off car.  Still, $80/month insurance, $150/month gas, and let's say $300/year maintenance = $3,060, so $7,316 left

Clothing/Toiletries/General Household Goods:  say $100 per month, $1,200, leaves us with $6,116 left

Food: According to the USDA the average for a family of three is $800 per month, let's say they're extra frugal and get it down to $500 per month, that's $6,000 per year, so $116 left over.

After covering the basics of shelter, food, clothing, and transportation a family living just above the poverty line has $116 left, and we haven't even touched medical care, entertainment, or unexpected bills.

We seriously need to re-evaluate the poverty line.

To be honest, I'm sick and tired of hearing how increasing the min wage, which would most likely increase most wages over time, will destroy the economy and cause massive inflation.

We know it won't. It would actually start moving those enormous piles of corporate cash they aren't spending into the economy and demand will increase. That's exactly what we need, more demand.

Hopefully, they can at least get it above $10. I'll endure the constant gnashing of teeth stories from local businesses and the award-winning Fox Business News.

Paying people more would also get more people off government assistance. How these people who hate the government helping people don't follow that logic makes me want to punch them in the goddamn teeth.

That's not how it works. Basically its: "Youre not getting any of mine, I'm gonna make you not get any and then I'll take some of yours" in business

2013-12-05 10:27:51 PM
You have to love the conservative logic.

Lock in minimum wage so that it depreciates over time through inflation.
Slash social programs minimum wage employees now depend on and then blame employees for becoming dependent on the government.
Demand minimum wage employs work harder so they can pull themselves up by their bootstraps.

FWIW, the last Labor Econ. class I took in 2011 had a study comparing wage hikes between NY and NJ and it pretty much showed that increasing the wage was beneficial to the economy.

I know there are arguments all over the f*cking map, on that study and all the others. But, increasing demand is the only thing I focus on in our current economy. We have far too many cash-poor people and we need to find a way to get money into their hands so they can spend it.

The funny thing is that doing so will make the rich even richer as their businesses start raking in all the sweet, sweet commie redistributed money.

I think an increase in the minimum wage my initially lead to an increase in prices, but it would be temporary.

The big corporations can absorb the costs and still be profitable, if perhaps slightly less so.  I'm sure the first reaction might be to try to pass the costs onto the consumer in the form of higher prices, but competitors will see it as an opportunity to operate with slimmer profit margins to undercut those that raise prices in order to gain more market share, and more profits overall.  So if McDonalds raises the price of a Quarter Pounder by $1, Burger King may decide to hold the Whopper steady and advertise how you can get more for your buck there.  They may make less per Whopper sold, but if consumers decide to buy more Whoppers and less Quarter Pounders because of the price point, they'll sell a lot more and make up for it in volume.

In a play on the "rising tide floats all boats" idea, wages going up would almost certainly result in an increase in the products delivered by workers at those wages (fast food, restaurants, gas, groceries, etc).

Business will, and have a right to, maintain their profit margins. The wont and cant just take it as a loss. It will get passed on to the consumer, and that will wipe out most of the gains, devaluing the dollar.
