So I wandered off to brave the grocery store earlier (I needed litter and cat food for the lord and master) and while I usually try to avoid Sunday afternoons, it was absolutely insane with everyone stocking up before it snows (which it is now, but it's supposed to be all rain tomorrow).

Anyway, I get to my car and some woman shoves her cart in my direction, and jumps in her van and starts to pull out - I'm waving her down and she gives me the finger and screams fu(k you! I just wanted to tell her that she forgot a bag on the bottom of her cart. Which I then appropriated. And contained this:

Dudes! They DO have a TNR and feral care program at Disneyland in Anaheim! They have five feeding stations hidden throughout the park and provide care for the kittehs. In return, the kittehs keep the rodent population down. I had a feeling there was something like that going down. The feral kittehs are viewed almost as employees. Kittehs everywhere are PLEASED by this news. The Gogh Beastie told me so.

On the back page of our ad this week from work, there is a door mat showing a couple of pairs of boots sitting on it. The photo clearly states "floor mat", and below that...."items on mat not included".  Guess how many people have come in wanting to buy the boots in our ad!!!!! Really, guess..... sigh. People are betarded.

Count me as one of them.

I read that as "...a couple of pairs of boobs sitting on it." and I thought well, duh!  Everbuddy loves boobies.

On the plus side, I looked up my Un Insur account on NYS Labor Dept website and saw my UI finally got approved.  Now all I need is the darned card to arrive in the mail so I can draw on it!

And so...

Dude! Congrats! My Mom went to church yesterday and they give out FREE BOOZE! It was wine and you were supposed to dip your cracker in it rather than snap it, but still, if Lutheran God will share his booze, then the gubermint can share some of their $$$. Especially since I'm pretty sure Lutheran God still trumps the US government - and I'm not even a Lutheran.

www.baconwrappedmedia.com

Seriously for our Caturdayians or anyone else who is hurting financially right now - check your local churches. Many of them have community dinners monthly or more often, they are free and quite tasty most of the time. Most don't make you praise Jesus first or anything (they will say a prayer before dinner, WHICH WILL NOT HURT YOU OR I WOULD HAVE BURST INTO FLAME AND SHOT STRAIGHT INTO VALHALLA THE VERY FIRST TIME!) and some of them will give you a bag of donated fuds to take home with you. "Stuff", too - if ya need it and the church is especially generous/well off. It's a community resource most communities do have and few seem to know about other than church folks and the occasional homeless dudes. I've done it before when times were tough and was having to make hard choices when it came to food and it helped tremendously. Take the help that is there and take a small amount of the pressure off yourself, just for that tiny bit of time. It really does help.

No one living S of 45 degrees N, say Minneapolis-St Paul MN, can drive in or on any of that.

Wow. I worry about burning myself on the steering wheel and grumbling about how long air cone takes to cool down the car. I've also been known to whinge about cold weather when it is 14C (A VERY cold winters day!). I don't know if my electric wheelchair comes with snow tyres either;)

Ok, now that is a great visual....snow tires on a wheel chair..it would need a plow though..make it convertable to a canopy/rain shelter? :)

Also, with the artist there was some debate if we should include the butthole in the piece with Leffe's lower half.
When it came down to it, I knew that's the way he would have wanted it.

Yup. The best and lightest cushioning EVER invented by the gods themselves is plain popcorn. I use a paper bag and kernels and do it in the microwave. Couple tablespoons of kernels, staple or tape bag, nuke it until the popping slows, just like the stuff you buy for microwave popping. As for the packing of the cookies, there's a method that works fairly well for most types. Take baked cookies and wrap them in pairs for flat/drop cookies, back to back, in plastic wrap. If they something like shortbread sticks, you can wrap them in bundles of four to six rather than in pairs. Strength in unity, yo. Put a layer of the micro (or air) popped popcorn in your box, then a layer of wrapped cookies, layer of popcorn again, layer of wrapped cookies. Heaviest stuff goes on the bottom, so if there's fudge and whatnot, that definitely goes on the bottom.

If you are putting them in tins or other fancy food-safe things first, make sure they are packed evenly and tightly in their happy container so there's minimal movement inside. Put down a layer of popcorn on the bottom of the box to cushion the tin/box/plastic egg/pinata/whatever and then pour more popcorn over it, gently shaking it to fill around the container.

I've not found a really good method for meringues yet, but for most cookies and Yuletide noms, that method works fine. It's the exact same method I used whenever a friend was deployed and wanted goodies, and it's the exact same method military wives and moms have been using for years. That says a lot right there, because military moms don't mess around when it comes to getting their little soldiers their goodies!

Meanwhile, the building fire alarm went off earlier today, I go to the hall to check, smoke, something definitely burning, I quick get dressed and go out to see what is going on before I stuff the white one in his carrier and take him out in the cold. Met the maintenance supervisor, no big deal, someone burned food on the stove - which the FD somehow was informed of, and took almost a half hour to respond and shut off the ear piercing shrieking alarm - which the white one slept through. I, on the other hand, still have a headache from it.

cynicalminion: it's days like today that make me want a ghostbuster-style backpack flamethrower to clear a path on the sidewalks...

I wanna know when they're going to get transporter technology up and beaming.
Getting to work was a nightmare on Friday...temp was -11...car started up just fine, once I got the door open...but I COULD NOT CLEAR THE WINDSHIELD.

Defroster, scrape, de-icer...my glasses fogged up...take off gloves to clean glasses...drop glasses...find glasses...where's the brush/scraper...
Meanwhile, my fingers are getting colder and colder...fabric that the gloves are made from becomes stiff in the cold, does no good in keeping fingers warm.
Car would heat up nicely, except that the windows are stuck open about 3 inches.
Raven's carrier has several blankets for her to snuggle into, she's OK (read 'not complaining')...but what with trying to clear the windows enough to see what I'm doing, it took me a half hour to make a trip that usually takes 5 minutes.

Get to work...fingers numb. Between tension and scrunching to see out clear space on windshield, my neck and shoulders are tied in knots and my stomach is asking "How'm I s'pose to back up on ya if ya didn't eat anything? Oh well, I guess dry heaves will have to do..."

Got my fingers thawed out, and oh, but they HURT while doing so!
I used tepid water...thought I remembered reading that hot water would cause cell damage. They were red, not white...so no frostbite, thank Ceiling Cat...but my fingers were sore and tender all night.

So yeah...I want that transporter up and running.
NAOW.

Well, you know what they say, Karma is the best payback is the one that comes with planning, and that brings the most horrendous pain to your enemies when they are not expecting and are just enjoying the fruits of all the dishonor they brought upon you. One must wait so he can really inflict pain to those who wronged him. Careful planing is necessary so your enemies will suffer terribly, but you won't be harmed by the Law or by your enemies' allies.

And I see it everyday with Suzy.

Heh. The Gogh Beastie has claimed my electric throw. I keep it over an old ATX case (waiting for guts, it is) under my desk so when I need it, it's right there. Well, now that it is Gogh's electric throw, he gets quite upset if I don't have it at least on the warmest setting at all times. He will sit on it and then realize it is NOT WARMSIES, MOM!!! and start pulling at leg. If I don't turn it on quickly enough for his liking, he'll add in some claw. If I still don't turn it on, he'll bite me. A couple bites later, that throw will either be turned on or I'll have a cat staring at me from under my desk with his teeth stuck in my leg. The brat seems to be unaware that he's a Norwegian Forest Cat - a breed well suited for incredibly foul weather - and that this is California.

I should get him one of these, so I don't have to share my throw with someone so rude as to bite me

Gremie's favorite daytime spot in the winter. The bench is located over a heating vent and in front of a window.
Warm butt, view of squirrels and rabbits in the front yard, and a direct shot to the kitchen off the end of the bench.

Ugh, long day, thank goodness for Caturday! Bashed my elbow into a cupboard door last night, it's the size of a softball. Spent the day insulating outdoor pipes at my moms house since we're getting 4 days of below 30 temps. Not something that happens here very often. The local hardware place had one piece of pipe insulation left when I got there so I had to find another way. CSC part: I remembered the local drug store had an entire area set aside for "pool noodles" during the summer (http://www.amazon.com/RAND-Swim-Noodle/dp/B0029XD0CG ) so I asked the manager if he still had them. He took me back to the stock room and pointed to the corner, it was pool noodle nirvana! I went and picked out several of the right size and he asked me what I was going to use them for. When I told him pipe insulation and explained that the hardware store was out, he laughed, then thought about it for a second and grabbed a few for himself. He gave me mine for free and said he would put them back out on the sales floor as pipe insulators. /end cool story caturday.

tl-dr version, I got the pipes insulated that needed it.

And some Alien bait to make up for the wall o text:

She always wanted to do it, but she grew up in an era where ladies simply did not do such things. When she got older - PAR-TAY!!! She made up for what she felt was lost time, with the full support of her entire family. She also once told me that she'd personally kick my ass if I ever quit doing things I did just for the sheer joy of them just because others did not approve - and I totally believed her. I miss her so much. She was an awesome lady.

DO NOT WANT Poster Girl: I assume the vet checked his liver enzymes? My rottie had that kind of cycle until her thyroid was checked and found her liver was not working right...prob a result of the heartworm treatment she had as a puppy....and then had to give her supporting medication called Denosyl.

Certain foods like organ meat and cheese would compromise her liver function and make her sick...Denosyl alleviated that but even then certain foods especially with high fats would set it off.

Yes, we did some blood work in Oct. which showed that his liver enzymes were rather high.  We also learned that he has a mild case of chronic pancreatitis.  He's now taking something called Zentonil Plus to support his liver and Ursodiol for the pancreas.  He is also on a low-fat diet.  The liver disease and the pancreatitis are linked but I'm not sure exactly how.

Anyway the meds and diet have helped somewhat, he seems generally more comfortable, although he does still get miserable and stop eating for days at a time, at least he doesn't seem to be in any pain, and he can rest better during the difficult periods.  High fat foods are a no-no but even so what he eats doesn't seem to make a difference as to when he feels good or bad.  The tumour in his bum is still growing but he's quite "regular" for now and it doesn't seem to cause him discomfort so we have that to be thankful for.  We spoil him with cuddles and his favourite healthy foods as much as we can every day and we just keep hoping that everything works out for the best.

Glad to hear your Rottie benefited from the medication, hope she's still doing well.

Salem Witch: I still undecided about decorating for Christmas this year.

Due to my situation, I had pretty much decided that there would be no tree and/or decorations this year (why unpack them just to repack them as I will probably be kicked out of my place shortly) ...but I am beginning to rethink it, as the white one truly loves his tree, and who knows if he will be around next year...so I might just have to do it just for him. (how could i say no to this face?)

Yay for Caturday! I've been super busy in the now Eternal Quest to Battle Termites and worked myself straight back into the hospital again. Got out yesterday, am tired, but fine. I keep falling asleep, but I need it. Also, decided I didn't have enough life insurance ($0 not being very much at all) to keep it up, so I subbed out most of my obligations and put the house in Posebyn back for sale. That sucks. But hey! Our house we actually live in right now won't fall on our heads and the hole in the side of the house is almost repaired, so there's that, I guess. I'll miss being able to go to Norway whenever I get the time and money and just having a place to stay without dealing with family, my weirdo friends or whatever is oozing around the hostel, which is always a mixed bag.

Glad to hear Buddy the Wonder Dog is having good times still! I'm rootin' for the little guy. He's made of some pretty tough stuff!

Q_J - hope you feel better soon and they can figure out what's up and fix0r you all more bettah.

Glad to hear Mrs B (IIRC - I'm still kinda out of it myself) is mending and hope it goes by quickly!

I know I missed people, so give yourselves hugs and if you're feeling a biatcheeky, a kiss, a pinch and a wink.

timelady: Long time lurker, always on the tail end of Caturday.  Much happiness found every Caturday, you guys have got me through a LONG semester of teaching AND study AND increased issues with spine (which should mean I do neither study or work, but meh).

I will try and post pics of Larry The Wonder dog (not original, but it suits him), our super intelligent Jack Russell, who helps me mark my student assignments my squirming onto one arm, flopping onto his back, an sighing with bliss. How to resist? He always knows when I am in pain (severe chronic pain due to car accident acquired spinal injury), and loves rides in my manual wheelchair. The electric - well, still thinking about it, but the kids can walk him alongside it happily. Or he walks them, hard to tell.

Getting pics of Briony Dark Empress of All Worlds is harder. She does not like being caught being affectionate or comfortable, prefers long suffering hard life pretence.

Off to play ukulele and practice the mandolin before playing taxi to one of the horde of five (offspring). The Bloke (tm) is away for a couple of days - well deserved, he is building a sundial out of old server racks, he is like that. For example, we have 17 tractors. He LIKES tractors. He likes lots of things. An interesting man!

Here in Australia I view your winter news with bemusement. Never snows where I am, and it is 32C today - a mild summer day. Gets to 45C for a few weeks at a time at height of summer. The pets that own us and the kidlets love air cone then! SO do I;) The Bloke just never notices, oddball he is;)

/ off to music land:)

Welcome out of lurkdom! YAY! I was about to ask if maybe you should be playing the digiridoo rather than ukelele and mandolin, but then realized I'm playing accordion and seljefloyte in California when if we're going by stereotypes I should be sitting on the beach blazing a fattie with the surfers and playing guitar. Whaddya gonna do? *shrug*

Usually we ask what cookies you brought, but I hear everything in Australia is actively trying to kill you, soooooo..... Unless you made them yourself, in which case, we'll trust ya!

Now for a sight many of us will be all too familiar with any day now, just in a wider variety of colors:

So off we went to the pet store to visit Santa.  Dyson shook in fear,, sat on my lap as I drove...seriously shook, he was scared.  Hoover wanted to sit on my lap too.  I'm not that big of a person so I had to tell him he got the passenger seat all to himself but it meant I had to touch him the entire way there.

We walked around and the boys were quite popular.  We got a lot of AWWWWW THEY ARE SO CUTE!!!  Kids wanted to pet them, adults wanted to pet them.  They had lots of things to smell....and big dogs to see and bark at.   sigh.....At least Hoover listens when I say hush.

I assume made of tumbleweeds?  If so, CSB time:

One day in Sacramento, a barracks buddy and I were reading the notice the First Shirt had sent around dictating what kind of decerations were authorized in the individual rooms and common areas of our dorms for Xmas.  Real trees could be 3 feet tall with no powered lights on them.  Nothing in your doom room bigger than a breadbox (I always joked that she meant 'thicker than a babby's arm', but a CS for another time).

Anyway, I had a bike for getting.  I remembered pedalling around the SW perimeter of McClellan AFB and seeing a bunch of small tumbleweeds blown by the wind into the base fence.  I told my buddy, "we need to go down there and get ourselves a Christmas Weed."

We hopped in my buddy's old early 70's era jeep something-or-other (looked... weird) and headed across base.  We were poking around down by the old abandoned warehouses when - we saw it!  Our bush!

It was actually bigger than 4 feet across, but we didn't care.  The damn thing could barely fit in the back!  We jeeped it back to the dorms, and it just fit on the end table in the corner we used for lamps or extra 24-packs.  It was shedding thorns and loose branches all over the dayroom rug, but if we vacuumed every five minutes we could keep the worst of the mess under control.

We put everything on that damn weed but the bathroom sink: old PCBs, orange extension cords, actual ornaments, glass stirring rods from the lab that we stole back to the dorms to stir our drinks with, tygon tubing, old pnuematic actuators, a small hubcap, and an old plastic baby bottle with a Jim Beam Green Label on it for the star.

It sat in the corner of our dayroom and gave us a little holiday spirit through our holiday dorm parties, the Christmas hangovers, many drunken episodes of MST3K late at night, and the traditional New Years Day Wings marathon on the Discovery Channel cranked to full volume.  And yes, I know I am going to hell for that.  Actually, I already am a broke bum in Binghamturd, so hell would actually be an improvement!!

And thinking about it, I realize that, derp in the bowels of memories and squallor that is my apartment, I have a photo album with pics of the Christmas Weed.  If I am not evicted by next week, I will have to scan and upload the pics.  It's the sort of thing you have to see, words simply don't do it justice.

End CSB.

How's Buddy?

He's actually having not a bad week!  Appetite is very good and he's taking all his meds!  I just don't get how he can be OK some days and at death's door a week later, and back.  The vet can't explain it, and doesn't know what else to do (other than trying to keep him comfortable, of course).  So we can't figure it out, but we know he could go at any time, so we just treasure these good days of a happy comfy Buddy at our sides, and leave it at that!  Can't think about anything else and don't want to.  He sends contented tail wags to everyone.

He's lost a little bit of weight recently, so he gets cold more easily, but on the plus side, his nice soft winter coat fits him very nicely now!  Which is good because it's getting well below freezing here.  But not so good because he absolutely hates wearing clothes and mommy *makes* him wear this when it's this cold.  He forgets about it and seems to enjoy himself more once we're outside, but eeew he can't get it off soon enough when we return!

[spinachgunk.smugmug.com image 800x600]

Blankies are where it's at.  Coats?  Pffft.

And thanks for the best wishes for the Missus.

tigerose: Finally home! Eli was very happy to see me. He is currently warming up my foot. I lurv mah kitteh!

I hope all is well with John Buck 41's wife. It is too bad her injury required surgery. Hopefully this will help it heal better.

gremlin1: John Buck 41:

How did things go today ?

Went pretty well. As I may (or may not) have said yesterday, the doc said it would *probably* heal ok on its own, but to be more sure of 100% use of her wrist/lower arm the surgery was the better option. She is still a little loopy but the pain isn't too bad. Thank you all again for your thoughts/good vibes. They really do matter  :)

*sigh* and immediately forget to use the preview button to make sure that the .gif being linked to isn't too big to submit.  anyway, still true, and having caught up with the thread, sending good thoughts to those looking at doc visits, hope everyone else can stay warm and healthy too...  notnotNOT looking forward to the walk into work this afternoon.  at least things here dried up before the temp dropped, so no ice, just bitter cold wind. :(

This is an update from my niece's FB page a couple of days ago. I thought some of you might get a chuckle.

"Crazy Cat Lady to the rescue. My buttnugget Wilson started making weird strangled noises and I saw the hair tie he was playing with was gone, so *BAM* mini Heimlich maneuver delivered. Out popped the hair tie and I have a live kitty who can be a retard another day. Crazy Cat Lady AWAAAYYYYY!"

The aforementioned buttnugget.

How ya doing QJ? Hoping better than the last couple of Caturdays!!

OlderGuy:
QJ.. glad to see you here, hope you are doing well.

I had my follow-up appointment with my regular doctor on Tuesday.
Because of some troubling readings from test results, he's referred me to a cardiologist for some more tests.
I have those on Monday and Tuesday.
We'll see if we can locate the culprit causing so many problems.
If they can, we'll see what we can do to rectify them.
Things are going to be iffy for a while longer.
Thanks for asking.

Been worrying about you & sending healing thoughts your way. Take care of yourself! Hope your mother is doing better.

And a cat (in this case, Ignatius Q Cat, aka Iggy or Mr. Iggs or Idiot Cat):

Blankies are where it's at.  Coats?  Pffft.

Happy Caturday everyone!! Thanks to everyone on the advice on the thyroid meds for Snuffy. He's been on them for a week now and boy has he perked up! He's got that "King of All Cats" attitude back, as Desi has ruefully learned! I've caught Snuffers chasing and pinning Desi a couple of time already. I don't feel real sorry for Desi as he's been poking Snuffy and asking for this for a while! I don't know if he's gained any weight as our scales don't agree with the vets. Snuffy will be headed back to the vets in a few weeks, we'll see if he's beefing up then.

Snuffy says "HI, Happy Caturday!"
