My boy Henry got his first Christmas card of the year today, the vet sends all the VIPs (Very Important Pets club) a card with a dental treat inside.  Me?  Nothing.  Zip.  And I'm the one that pays the bills.  Not fair.

simplicimus: Why are the humans getting vet care?

I have a very political answer for that, if that question was in a different thread.  In this thread, it's because vets are nicer!

Wow, what a tale!  Catbamacare sounds better'n the kind hoo-mons get.  FangQ Eddie Adams from Torrance for coining that phrase. & Welcome to Caturday.

syzygy whizz said late-on last Caturday she'd be honoured for her ascii kitty to become Logo of the 1st Caturday Airborne Brigade, (abbrev 1st CAB, hope got that right or at least close!) in support of those doing National Service for the Allied Nations (US & whatever other applicable, as Canada, UK, Australia, New Zealand, etc etc).  Especially the 2 young ladies doing Basic Training at Ft Leonard Wood, that micromedic requested those who could, to please write to them.  Request made last time. Here 'tis, embiggened a little --

^-^

='.'=

Classic, simple, easily reproduced by anyone who can type.  Idea is to put this on mail going from Caturday folk to such as the 2 YLs, an Easily Identifiable Mark.

Almost double post, pleased it failed.
Importantly, syzygy whizz agreed late last time to give/lend her ascii kitty as logo of 1st CAB, (Caturday Airborne Brigade or similar, if I recall aright).  This to support esp with mail, those now in Ntl Service to our & other Allied nations, very esp the 2 young ladies in Basic Training at Ft Leonard Wood MO (aka Ft LostInTheWoods, pun older than the hills the Fort's located in) who're in line to learn to become Military Police when they complete Basic.  micromedic requested those of us who could, to write them as they've little to no family support.
Here's the ascii kitty, enlarged a tad.  Can/ought go on mail from Us to Those We Supporting.
                                                        ^-^
                                                      ='.'=

Simple, easily typable by most.  Might widen space between ears to 2 dashes & not really compromise design, like so
                                                       ^--^

ASCII Kitty starts out with null character (alt 255) in order to center it...
If someone wants to put wings on it to indicate Airborne brigade, that'd be great!
Glad to have something nifty to contribute...

Happy Caturday everyone!! Thanks to everyone on the advice on the thyroid meds for Snuffy. He's been on them for a week now and boy has he perked up! He's got that "King of All Cats" attitude back, as Desi has ruefully learned! I've caught Snuffers chasing and pinning Desi a couple of time already. I don't feel real sorry for Desi as he's been poking Snuffy and asking for this for a while! I don't know if he's gained any weight as our scales don't agree with the vets. Snuffy will be headed back to the vets in a few weeks, we'll see if he's beefing up then.

Oboy.  q_j needs see cardiologist, Mrs John Buck 41 needs surgery to fix her busted wing. All Appendages Crossed for Good Results for both!
Also, what I ducked out to go GoodSearch, is that tomorrow Dec 6 is the 96th anniversary of the Republic of Finland from which half me forefeathers hark.  In 1917 Finland became independent of the Russian Republic. Irregardless (yes that's deliberate) of weather, Finnish flag I own will fly along with US on the morrow. Christmas is also a Finnish flag day, as are birthday annivs of a number of authors.  I sponsor a Finn lady into Young Ladies Radio League (intl org that has the magazine I need transcribe every 2 months) as well as an Aussie & one from S Africa who now lives in NZ.
On subject of S Africa, please rest in highly honoured peace Mr Mandela, you've had long most useful  run.

He's actually having not a bad week!  Appetite is very good and he's taking all his meds!  I just don't get how he can be OK some days and at death's door a week later, and back.  The vet can't explain it, and doesn't know what else to do (other than trying to keep him comfortable, of course).  So we can't figure it out, but we know he could go at any time, so we just treasure these good days of a happy comfy Buddy at our sides, and leave it at that!  Can't think about anything else and don't want to.  He sends contented tail wags to everyone.

He's lost a little bit of weight recently, so he gets cold more easily, but on the plus side, his nice soft winter coat fits him very nicely now!  Which is good because it's getting well below freezing here.  But not so good because he absolutely hates wearing clothes and mommy *makes* him wear this when it's this cold.  He forgets about it and seems to enjoy himself more once we're outside, but eeew he can't get it off soon enough when we return!

Yay caturday!
Our (very old) alpha master is still trying to train me. Panther gets upset if I do not go to sleep when he requires (usually around 9:pm) and does a "head bump" multiple times a night if I stay up past that. If I go to bed immediately, he curls up around an arm and eventually leaves but when he comes back just curls up on whomever he finds an exposed limb. Our other master, Gideon, takes it upon himself to snuggle/knead/wake up the teenager multiple times a night. Hoping for the best the kid put his electric blanket in a bird bath he brought in from outside, hoping a Gid would sleep there. Nope, the kid is more fun for Gid.

I asked the kid if we should look for an alternative home for Gid and I got the response I wanted. The kid accused me of murder/etc. the kid would be happy to be rid of me first. :)

How's Buddy?

[spinachgunk.smugmug.com image 800x600]

Blankies are where it's at.  Coats?  Pffft.

Just take everyday as the gift that it is.
Give Buddy a cuddle from me.

Is it your heart?????  That is what usually causes most of my problems.  From the general public, and most of the people I work with, it's from a "lack" of one.  Their opinion, not mine.

Snuffybud: Happy Caturday everyone!!

Snuffy says "HI, Happy Caturday!"

QJ.. glad to see you here, hope you are doing well.

I had my follow-up appointment with my regular doctor on Tuesday.
Because of some troubling readings from test results, he's referred me to a cardiologist for some more tests.
I have those on Monday and Tuesday.
We'll see if we can locate the culprit causing so many problems.
If they can, we'll see what we can do to rectify them.
Things are going to be iffy for a while longer.
Thanks for asking.

Been worrying about you & sending healing thoughts your way. Take care of yourself! Hope your mother is doing better.

Rob and I are overwhelmed by the thoughts of so many of you on her impending surgery. Thank you all again SO much. We have an early start tomorrow (well, early for ME) so off to bed. A full update coming tomorrow afternoon at some point (yes, I'm taking the day off to baby my Sweetie)

Evening, all!

Glad Snuffy and Buddy are doing better!

Good luck on your surgery, Mrs. Buck.

Best of luck with the new Dr, QJ.

Thanks for the happy birthday wishes. It was good.

My agenda for today:

1) Get my car battery jumped by AAA
2) Sit in the car in 15° temps for an hour to recharge
3) Watch for Office Max truck to deliver a new desk chair (why I need to sit in car outside rather than in warmer underground garage)
4) Watch for UPS to deliver order of cat food and litter from Amazon (see note for #3)
5) Go to cat sitting job and hang around after putting out food and cleaning litter box hoping to see two scaredy cats

Hector has found a favorite place to hang out, he loves to lay on my shoulder. The only problem is that he loves to do it like a baby getting burped so I still need a hand to support him. Makes for interesting cat-like typing especially if I am doing it one handed with my left.

Stay as warm as you can.
It's not that cold here only in the low 20's but the wind is starting to kick up and Jack the dog is thrilled because this is his type of weather. I let him out about 1/2 hour ago and every once in awhile he bangs on the back door trying to get me to go out with him. Gremie is sitting in his window keeping watch on "his" dog. I'll give Jack another 1/2 hour and then I'll bribe him to get him back in the house.

Don't judge me by my other posts in the TFD threads. I'm not really as big of an asshole as I pretend to be. Kittehs are my soft spot, along with my kids.

Here's something that tells a lot about me:

The last ink I got on the back of my upper arms (triceps) which features a drawing I did of my dearly departed awesome grey cat, Leffe. He went over the rainbow bridge 2 years ago but he still holds a huge spot in my heart.

Also, with the artist there was some debate if we should include the butthole in the piece with Leffe's lower half.
When it came down to it, I knew that's the way he would have wanted it.

Went pretty well. As I may (or may not) have said yesterday, the doc said it would *probably* heal ok on its own, but to be more sure of 100% use of her wrist/lower arm the surgery was the better option. At this point I'd say there's over three inches on the ground and we've been getting flurries frequently all day. There have even been a couple of times when it was beyond flurries to just plain old snow fall. You can just barely tell where the sidewalk area in front of the apartments end and the parking lot begins.

I had planned to walk to the Walmart Neighborhood Market tomorrow, but if this keeps up that's going to be difficult. My balance isn't especially great so I don't do well on slippery surfaces like snow & ice.

Holy cold, batman!!! Our "high" for today was supposed to be 2 above... but lots of windchillz... so it's more like 10 or 15 below!  We got a skiff of snow before all the cold started... so it's sticking because it doesn't have a choice :)  Hot tea, warm blankets and snuggles with Lars & Cassie are in the forecast until the cold snap goes away.

Glad to hear Mrs. JohnBuck is doing ok after surgery!!

Hope anyone sickly is feeling better!

Hippo Birdies to... umm... PV?  I think?  Damn my memory sucks today...

On a side note, watched a great documentary at work today.  It's called "Happy" and it's about the psychology of happiness.  It's on Netflix.  I HIGHLY recommend it!

Guy on one of local Zinzinnati TV stations claims he has permit to carry concealed snow scraper. Hah! Is guy who wears black Stetson hat when out reporting.  Some residents' pig took shelter under house's back porch.  Local TV news entirely overran ntl, since there was no ntl news of more than quite minimal importance.
Lil Bub's new friend Spooky's attractive/handsome/whatever.
Left this open on minimise all thru din-din for all here.  Highly Recommended for folk to stay in if they need not go out -- some folk who spoke to news crew said they had to go out to wedding planned months ago. Hope this is All Better by tomorrow; we supposed to attend memorial svc for chorusmate of Plumbicon's who died back on Nov 12. He was only 88, not 95 like Mr Mandela.

Damn, way too many posts I would like to respond to, so let me see if I can do a quick catch up...

OJ, Mrs. John Buck, and anyone else under the weather, feel better soon. Happy belated birfday to PV. Congrats to Buddy the Wonder Dog and Snuffy for hanging tough and not giving up (and the white boy agrees that blankies are where it's at). Welcome to the mewbies. Apologies if I forgot anyone, my brain is mush. And hugs to everyone just because.

I love the kitten "Play wif me?" body language.
Saw a lot of it recently from Casper to Raven.
Video had a soundtrack so couldn't tell...but I'll bet Spooky was making those trilling sounds (mmmrrrr? mmmrrrrrr? mmmrrrrrr? with a rising inflection) that accompany this behavior...

Does Gabby use her scratching post on a regular basis? If not, a cat's claws can and will grow into the pad and be painful. Try and look without touching so you know what you are dealing with. If not, she may have just jumped and landed wrong, and IMHE that usually resolves itself in a couple of days.

I love driving in snow....always did. Especially at night when there's hardly anyone on the road and I'm 'cutting tracks'. There's something about it I find very peaceful.

Yeah, she uses it. A week or so ago, he said he saw her chewing on her foot, and thought he saw some blood. I looked at it a week ago, and it looked fine. But when I went to trim her nails the other day, she had a shiat-fit, and almost bit me! I'm wondering if she got a nail hung up in the carpet, or something, and maybe pulled it.

*** CATURDAY HOLIDAY CARD UPDATE ***

Unfortunately, we are a little bit behind our normal shipping schedule due to the late Thanksgiving holiday delaying things at the printer - however, the cards are now in the elves' hot little hands (and they came out awesome) and are all packed up and have begun to ship. I will send a shipping confirmation via email to all of you as soon as I get my act together (my apologies, I have a lot on my mind right now)...

And I just want to take a second to thank everyone once again for making our little project a success for the third year in a row ... you guise rock!

Hubby and I are baffled as to why he doesn't want to stay inside because it's (texas) cold as hell. I got fed up earlier and left the window open for a few minutes.

[spinachgunk.smugmug.com image 800x600]

Blankies are where it's at.  Coats?  Pffft.

I assume the vet checked his liver enzymes? My rottie had that kind of cycle until her thyroid was checked and found her liver was not working right...prob a result of the heartworm treatment she had as a puppy....and then had to give her supporting medication called Denosyl.

Certain foods like organ meat and cheese would compromise her liver function and make her sick...Denosyl alleviated that but even then certain foods especially with high fats would set it off.

Do you really???  I hate snow.  Well, I like to LOOK at it in the distance, but not drive around in it, or shovel it.

I love driving in snow....always did. Especially at night when there's hardly anyone on the road and I'm 'cutting tracks'. There's something about it I find very peaceful.

Me too. I had a 914 that was great in the snow. I had a blast.

I assume made of tumbleweeds?  If so, CSB time:

One day in Sacramento, a barracks buddy and I were reading the notice the First Shirt had sent around dictating what kind of decerations were authorized in the individual rooms and common areas of our dorms for Xmas.  Real trees could be 3 feet tall with no powered lights on them.  Nothing in your doom room bigger than a breadbox (I always joked that she meant 'thicker than a babby's arm', but a CS for another time).

Anyway, I had a bike for getting.  I remembered pedalling around the SW perimeter of McClellan AFB and seeing a bunch of small tumbleweeds blown by the wind into the base fence.  I told my buddy, "we need to go down there and get ourselves a Christmas Weed."

We hopped in my buddy's old early 70's era jeep something-or-other (looked... weird) and headed across base.  We were poking around down by the old abandoned warehouses when - we saw it!  Our bush!

It was actually bigger than 4 feet across, but we didn't care.  The damn thing could barely fit in the back!  We jeeped it back to the dorms, and it just fit on the end table in the corner we used for lamps or extra 24-packs.  It was shedding thorns and loose branches all over the dayroom rug, but if we vacuumed every five minutes we could keep the worst of the mess under control.

We put everything on that damn weed but the bathroom sink: old PCBs, orange extension cords, actual ornaments, glass stirring rods from the lab that we stole back to the dorms to stir our drinks with, tygon tubing, old pnuematic actuators, a small hubcap, and an old plastic baby bottle with a Jim Beam Green Label on it for the star.

It sat in the corner of our dayroom and gave us a little holiday spirit through our holiday dorm parties, the Christmas hangovers, many drunken episodes of MST3K late at night, and the traditional New Years Day Wings marathon on the Discovery Channel cranked to full volume.  And yes, I know I am going to hell for that.  Actually, I already am a broke bum in Binghamturd, so hell would actually be an improvement!!

And thinking about it, I realize that, derp in the bowels of memories and squallor that is my apartment, I have a photo album with pics of the Christmas Weed.  If I am not evicted by next week, I will have to scan and upload the pics.  It's the sort of thing you have to see, words simply don't do it justice.

End CSB.

Went pretty well. As I may (or may not) have said yesterday, the doc said it would *probably* heal ok on its own, but to be more sure of 100% use of her wrist/lower arm the surgery was the better option. She is still a little loopy but the pain isn't too bad. Thank you all again for your thoughts/good vibes. They really do matter  :)

While I was gone a message was left on my answering machine, apparently I won a Caribbean Cruise that I don't remember signing up for, however they forgot to leave a number to call them back. So off we went to the pet store to visit Santa.  Dyson shook in fear,, sat on my lap as I drove...seriously shook, he was scared.  Hoover wanted to sit on my lap too.  I'm not that big of a person so I had to tell him he got the passenger seat all to himself but it meant I had to touch him the entire way there.

We walked around and the boys were quite popular.  We got a lot of AWWWWW THEY ARE SO CUTE!!!  Kids wanted to pet them, adults wanted to pet them.  They had lots of things to smell....and big dogs to see and bark at.   sigh.....At least Hoover listens when I say hush.

Long time lurker, always on the tail end of Caturday.  Much happiness found every Caturday, you guys have got me through a LONG semester of teaching AND study AND increased issues with spine (which should mean I do neither study or work, but meh).

I will try and post pics of Larry The Wonder dog (not original, but it suits him), our super intelligent Jack Russell, who helps me mark my student assignments my squirming onto one arm, flopping onto his back, an sighing with bliss. How to resist? He always knows when I am in pain (severe chronic pain due to car accident acquired spinal injury), and loves rides in my manual wheelchair. The electric - well, still thinking about it, but the kids can walk him alongside it happily. Or he walks them, hard to tell.

Getting pics of Briony Dark Empress of All Worlds is harder. She does not like being caught being affectionate or comfortable, prefers long suffering hard life pretence.

Off to play ukulele and practice the mandolin before playing taxi to one of the horde of five (offspring). The Bloke (tm) is away for a couple of days - well deserved, he is building a sundial out of old server racks, he is like that. For example, we have 17 tractors. He LIKES tractors. He likes lots of things. An interesting man!

Here in Australia I view your winter news with bemusement. Never snows where I am, and it is 32C today - a mild summer day. Gets to 45C for a few weeks at a time at height of summer. The pets that own us and the kidlets love air cone then! SO do I;) The Bloke just never notices, oddball he is;)

/ off to music land:)

Yay for Caturday! I've been super busy in the now Eternal Quest to Battle Termites and worked myself straight back into the hospital again. Got out yesterday, am tired, but fine. I keep falling asleep, but I need it. Also, decided I didn't have enough life insurance ($0 not being very much at all) to keep it up, so I subbed out most of my obligations and put the house in Posebyn back for sale. That sucks. But hey! Our house we actually live in right now won't fall on our heads and the hole in the side of the house is almost repaired, so there's that, I guess. I'll miss being able to go to Norway whenever I get the time and money and just having a place to stay without dealing with family, my weirdo friends or whatever is oozing around the hostel, which is always a mixed bag.

Glad to hear Buddy the Wonder Dog is having good times still! I'm rootin' for the little guy. He's made of some pretty tough stuff!

Q_J - hope you feel better soon and they can figure out what's up and fix0r you all more bettah.

Glad to hear Mrs B (IIRC - I'm still kinda out of it myself) is mending and hope it goes by quickly!

I know I missed people, so give yourselves hugs and if you're feeling a biatcheeky, a kiss, a pinch and a wink.

timelady: Long time lurker, always on the tail end of Caturday.

Welcome out of lurkdom! YAY! I was about to ask if maybe you should be playing the digiridoo rather than ukelele and mandolin, but then realized I'm playing accordion and seljefloyte in California when if we're going by stereotypes I should be sitting on the beach blazing a fattie with the surfers and playing guitar. Whaddya gonna do? *shrug*

Usually we ask what cookies you brought, but I hear everything in Australia is actively trying to kill you, soooooo..... Unless you made them yourself, in which case, we'll trust ya!

Now for a sight many of us will be all too familiar with any day now, just in a wider variety of colors:

of a cat that walked into a home, curled up under the tree
on Christmas day, and never left.

a) home, b) Feline Overlords & -Ladies fed 90 min ago, c) Plumbicon & me too, d) laundry (not HarmonyLodge's but ours for change!) not only begun but onto 2d load, e) was at TTE.
Knocked self outta TTE location & deleted fair amount of typing, trying to get Best Comment to go with this pic. Hardly worth it.  ralthiel typed yesterday, either on imgur or reddit where this began: Demon kitty, raging kitty, little ball of piss. Angry kitty, spiteful kitty, hiss, hiss, hiss.  skankboy dubbed it I still think he's cute. imho, male cats are only cute when bitty.  Become Handsome as they grow up.

Can/will reconstruct comments for pgs 7&8 too:
yobbery: Very Much Approve of Tree of Black Cats with LaserEyes. Izzat something you did? If so, may I have your permission to copy?
Already furrgot what else on 7.
On 8, Diocletian's Last Cabbage's CSB: snork. Entertaining, appreciated.
Johnnybananapeel, hope against all reasonable hope for safe full-furred return of living Timothy.  Sometimes miraculous things happen --
catlike typist who maya been on pg 7 & timelady on 8, pleased to see you both manifest yourselves. tl, you'd hoot wildly at recent US Midwestern developments from recent weather.  Not only did Great Swath get 3-5" (8-13cm) of snow yesterday, but also Thick Glare Ice. No one living S of 45 degrees N, say Minneapolis-St Paul MN, can drive in or on any of that.  Drivers around here (Cincinnati OH) go bonkers when roads merely wet.
Did also type, part of loss, that 2d performance for Saengerfest at St Francis Seraph downtown was better; more in audience, they gave us Standing O. Plumbicon heard both, said we did ~equally well both times.

Fireworks? Whyfor they blowing up the sky? Is it a very bizarre Pearl Harbor thing? I would not imagine exploding things in the sky would be appropriate for that, all things considered.

I still undecided about decorating for Christmas this year. It sure does look nice and it gives me a warm fuzzy. Maybe I'll get some motivation this week.

This is one of the things I do for Christmas. Mr. Witch keeps saying he is going to wire these so I won't have to try to stuff them with strings of lights each year.

I'm here. I went out to Pompton Lakes' Holiday Stroll tonight - damn near froze! Hung out at one of the stores with some friends while waiting for the festivities to begin. During this time we discovered how many witches it takes to operate an old fashioned popcorn machine.
