Auctioneer: And now our next item. Please direct your attention to this photo of a beautiful 40-foot fishing boat.
Peter: Oh, man! That's perfect!
Man: $12,000!
Peter: $13,000!
Man 2: $25,000!
Auctioneer: Sold for $25,000!
Man 2: Yes!
Peter: Crap!
Man 2: Thanks.
Auctioneer: And now the actual boat itself. Do I have an opening bid for the boat?

Meh, Ebay is telling the seller to refund the money. He may learn something from this.

I love the part where he bought the console "for his son"... that seems likely.

I had to bid on it. My original Xbox box is totally obsolete by now.

Get used to it, tard.

Your best bet would be to never buy anything, ever.  Never sign any contracts, ever.

Because people are going to see you coming a block away.

Look at the quality of the picture.  For $750, you'd expect a nice glossy finish and even a frame.

Oh, and he was trying to buy the console for his "child"? Right.

Knee capping. Its the only way. Or, you could sue eBay for willful negligence. But that biatch's site out of business.

I'm failing to see the mail fraud.  It was advertised as a picture of a day one Xbox One, which is exactly what was delivered.

This.

But then, judging by the photo, I'm astounded that man can read or use a computer.

I know this is pointless but to the people who say it isn't fraud - it was not listed in the photography section in eBay. It was specifically listed under consoles. So yes, it was actually fraud and I do hope he gets his money back.

That said, he's a dumbnuts.

I remember when the PS4's came out the eBay listings were about 75% "PS4 email address" and other flotsam designed in the hopes to get people who were shotgunning sniping programs to win a PS4 for less than issue price.

I'm still holding to an unboxed Day One edition Xbox One. Hmmm, I wonder if I could still get $750 for it?

I have consistently had bad experiences on eBay. Scammers, defective products, shady people. eBay just plain sucks. I've given up on it.

And no, this guy's not a dumbass, this ebay seller is a criminal. On its face this is a scam, and sellers like this should be vilified and socially outcast at every opportunity.

I'm failing to see the legitimacy. No one sells printouts of photos of physical items on ebay except to scam people.

I sell stuff on eBay from time to time and really try to describe everything as best I can.
It's dumbass's that bid without reading anything that piss me off.
I've had to tell people continually, "Did you read the description"? and all I sell are little Heroclix figures.
They'll scream and holler that they wanted "figure 001" and I'm selling "figure 002". Even with pictures and descriptions, PEOPLE DON'T FARKING READ!

It's "I watz dat!" - click. "Hey, WHY U NO SENDZ ME DAH UDDER TING?"

A teen dad is pissed after spending some $750 on what he thought was an Xbox One console for his four-year-old son,

Yeah, that was definitely for the 4 year old.  I'm gonna get my 3 year old some nice grilling accessories this year.

The 19-year-old acknowledges that the item was specifically marketed as a "photo," but says the category it was listed under - video games and consoles - convinced him it was legit.

I've had two bad experiences and eBay made them refund my money both times. Almost immediately after my complaint.

YMMV

No they didn't. Given all other stories, eBay is nothing but scammers who ruin lives, just ask the people up thread.

/have been using eBay for years, neverhad a problem

The same can be said of money, banks and real estate. So? I've used eBay over the years to build a (quite useless overall) high speed pulse research lab.

No,

I'm saying that scamming people like that is a dick move, but also, the guy has to be some sort of special idiot to fall for a scam like that in this day and age.

Don't be stupid. Between people hoping to make a quick buck off of Christmas resale owing to scarcity of supply and the actual people who want to buy one, you won't find either console sitting around in a store for long.
Hell, it was even that way with the WiiU in most places, and it still only has like five games worth playing on it, a year later.

Ive sold thousands of items with no negatives and just a couple neutrals that were my fault. Recently started up again selling rc parts and am making 1000+ a month from it.  OTOH about 5% of my purchases I have had to open a case over. Usually because I won an item super cheap and they refuse to ship it.

This guy was an idiot who knowingly bought a photo for $750 (which wouldnt even be a good deal for a system anyways).

I"M SHOCKED!!! SHOCKED I TELL YOU Ebay sided with the buyer..  The seller may have been an asshole buy he wasn't lying.. Ebay is notorious for instantly granting buyers whatever they want when they complain about a seller even though the seller did jack shiat wrong and gets punished for it.
