With the forecast high of 14°F in Denver on Sunday, he'll be lucky to complete a dozen passes total. Peyton is not a cold-weather QB.

Every evening for dinner Manning demands fresh whale to be delivered to him, and every night he takes a single bite, expresses his disdain for the meal and has the entire animal thrown out.

At least, that's what I've heard.

Last year in the playoffs at Mile High Stadium in 13oF weather, he completed just short of 30 passes and had 3 touchdowns. Of course, they lost the game due to some insanely bad defense and Joe Flacco flinging up prayers, but just saying.

That's a natural by-product of being one of the winningest QB's in NFL history, and making the playoffs nearly every single year he's been in the league.

That playoff game last year was brutal...it may have been 13 degrees at kickoff but it sure as hell wasn't 13 degrees by the end of the game especially in the upper level of the stadium where I was.

Yes, because in a game played on the field by teams consisting of 92 active players combined each game, approximately 40 coaches apiece and god knows how many other factors is squarely on the shoulders of one player, right?

Aside from Dwight Freeny and Robert Mathis, name me a single standout, consistent player the Colts ever had on the defensive side of the football during Manning's career.

Then, lets look at the defenses of teams that won multiple Super Bowls during that time, like the Patriots, Steelers and Ravens.  Much more complete teams, with much better defenses.  There's a reason that Trent Dilfer and freaking Joe Flacco have Super Bowl rings...

Considering Manning has made the playoffs 12 times and 1 one Super Bowl he's about where he should be in the ring count...11 out of 12 playoff teams don't win the Super Bowl every year so it makes sense that out of 12 possible changes he probably wouldn't win 11 out of 12 times.  He's also got 9 wins out of 20 which isn't a great record but it's not terrible considering one of two quarterbacks in a given playoff game isn't going to win that game.  If he had made the playoffs 12 times and was 0 for 12 with 49 interceptions I would agree that he sucks in the playoffs but he's mediocre if anything.

Stats:

Most wins - tied for 9th (has the worst winning percentage of the 6 players tied for 9th)
Most losses - tied with Brett Favre for 1st
Most playoff games started - 5th (the 4 people ahead of him have a combined 10 Super Bowl wins)

Just to compare across sports, Tom Glavine holds the record for most playoff losses by a pitcher and Whitey Ford holds the record for most World Series losses.  As for hockey, the 3 goalies with the most playoff losses are Patrick Roy, Martin Brodeur, and Ed Belfour.

What do all of these people have in common?  They are or were great players who were obviously good enough to play enough playoff games to have the distinction of holding all time losses records for playoff games.  What else do they have in common?  They all won at least one championship.  Combined, they won 7 World Series titles, 8 Stanley Cups and 3 Olympic Gold medals.

Re: Manning's playoff record. The Colts' defense (you know, the part of the game that usually ends up carrying a team through the playoffs) has been, at best, average throughout the team's non-suck years. Might have something to do with it.

What's the deal with that chart? Are the yellow, orange, and red squares supposed to mean anything?

Anyway, Peyton is one of the top QBs in the history of the NFL. That's what makes it so much fun to watch him lose.

Yes, but since they are not going to take the Super Bowls away from the Pats, I guess all you can do is cry about it. the Pats scammed three Super Bowls away from the other teams and no one can do a damn thing about it. Still SB Champs. I guess you can put an * next to it if it makes you feel better :)

1) Given that it's single elimination, that's basically "(# of years he leads a team to the playoffs) - (# of Super Bowls won)".  Hint: All the guys who have lost a lot of NFL playoff games are very good football players.  It means they've had long careers on good teams.

2) You should mention that he's presently tied with Brett Favre so that we can see how much a guy with 12 NFL playoff losses "sucks".

3) I hear there were other players on those football teams, and that Manning did not single-handedly lose those games.

Unlike Favre who with a well-timed interception did single-handedly lose many of those play off games.

SquiggsIN: If you don't like Manning it's probably because you're a farking moron who is a Patriot *** ring-counting, Brady-slurping asswipe. . . . Outside of New England, Manning is considered the superior player and you all need to come to grips with it.

I'd like to think that there are plenty of people in New England who realize that, too.

I hope the Pats win when I'm watching them. But I can't call myself a Pats fan. For some reason, I feel like you have to have experienced the sweet and the sour to be a real Pats fan, and that's not me. I've only really cared about football the last four or five years, aside from watching the Super Bowl Commercials or catching a game in the background. My father is a Pats fan, and he suffered through years of bad-to-mediocre football to get to where the Pats are playing today. That's worthy of fandom. As I explained to my dad, my experiences of Fourth-Quarter Comeback Tom Brady(TM) pretty much go like this: (1st & 10) incomplete pass, (2nd & 10) incomplete pass, (3rd & 10) dropped pass by [Welker/Branch/etc.], (4th & 10) sack or incomplete or DAGRON to the end zone for an INT. I missed the so-called good years. That, combined with my own pessimism in sports viewing, keep me from calling myself a "fan" (lest I become a bandwagon fan).

Asterisks aside, Brady has more rings, Brady has the better numbers in a few places - I only realized a couple weeks ago that the Brady-Manning war was as lopsided as it was. I figured Manning had won at least half if not more of those games. But Brady is just a quarterback. Manning is more or less the OC as well. When I mentioned Jack Del Rio was "standing in" as head coach weeks ago, a friend told me that's the strangest spelling of "Peyton Manning" that he's ever seen. Manning's contribution to the team, record aside, is what will set him apart way down the road.

You don't have to like a guy to respect him. NE fans "hate" him because they fear him. They fear what an offense can do with Manning at the helm. And fear, in that context, is a form of respect.

As for the Pats*, I'd love to see them get one more ring before Brady hangs it up. He's only got a couple good seasons left, and I'd like to see the Patriots win one Super Bowl without controversy, one that can't be questioned. But then I think about it, and I don't think that's possible. Just this season, they have the lucky no-calls in the Saints game, the lucky break at the end of the Broncos game, and the accusation after the Houston game. Hell, this is a team that's still paying the karma gods back for the Tuck Rule if you ask the right people. If the Pats won another ring, I'm pretty sure someone would find a way to hang an asterisk on that one, too.

As a NE fan, I don't hate him because I fear him. I don't hate him. I "dislike" that he gets a pass on the ballwashing while Brady's fans get called "Peter King".

But he's a nice guy, and I wish him nothing but the best*
