Petri Muhlhauser, a student involved with the university's LGBTQ Center leadership program hopes the data will help push for more tangible things, such as gender neutral bathrooms.
"One of the big things that we're looking at, and pushing for, right now is gender neutral bathrooms on campus," she said. " There are fifteen gender neutral bathrooms on campus but only three of them are available for students and one of them is specifically for dance students. So that's two gender neutral bathrooms, both of which are in the library."

Why is this needed?  I thought those existed because they were a single occupancy bathroom and they didn't have two close together.  Is putting them in so people don't have to decide if they have a penis or not really an issue?

Interesting. That's the same number of options I generally give people to describe the merit of Opposing Views:

1) Worthless
2) Shiat
3) Worthless shiat
3) Slightly better than cancer
4) Worse than cancer
5) Dumber than Consumerist
6) More vapid than Buzzfeed
7) No response, please get it away from me

I said it in another thread. If you're going to submit an Opposing Views link, at least try submitting the original source first. Nothing on OV is original, and most of the time it's obviously biased. Plus we can give the more obscure news sites some opportunity to shine, or piss us off. Sure, use OV to get ideas of good fark links (and headlines), but let's try to avoid the actual OV.

There was a gender thread last week, but I have a question about orientation from the article:

Following that question is: "What is your sexual orientation?" Applicants can choose from "Bisexual," "Gay," "Lesbian," "Queer," "Straight/ Heterosexual," "Other" or "Prefer Not To Answer."

What does "Queer" now stand for?  And is the "Other" category just for the furries or similar interests?

"On a scale of one to ten, how much do you like cock?" Should weed out the stupid.

All 7 and we'll watch them fall
They stand in the way of love
And we will smoke them all
With an intellect and a savoir-faire
No one in the whole universe
Will ever compare

And this hurts you...how? If someone wants to describe themselves as gender queer, asexual, intersex, poly etc, this negatively affects your life in WHAT way?

Seriously, I get that you're SUPER UPSET that someone is slightly different than you, but climb down from the cross. We need the wood.

Transgendered are whatever they think they are- even if they still have factory parts.

Everything else is just trim and a paint job

What percentage of the entire population falls into these long lists of categories beyond "heterosexual" or traditional "male"/"female?"  At what point does providing extra categories just give birth to a bunch of statistically irrelevant categories that end up being lumped together as "other" for the purposes of calculation by anyone doing any valid analysis of the data?  If you're getting response rates of 48%, 48%, and eleventy infinitesimally-low-response categories that combine to make up the remaining 4%, you're wasting a lot of time by not simply asking for "other."

That's sex. These are questions about gender ID and sexual orientation. I don't argue when a form asks me for my sex.

I just took a survey, they only had four options for gender (though the last was fill-in-the-blank).

They had a whole freaking page of racial identifiers though. At least 20.

Spend fifteen minutes figuring out their "preferred" gender before we even start the survey?

I may be incorrect, but I think that the latter implies having both masculine and feminine traits, while the former implies having neither.

I thought the weirdest part was that queer is an option. Queer is slang for gay. There are no straight people who describe themselves as queer. If you are queer, you are gay. If you are gay you are queer. Its the same thing.

Along the same lines, why do we need to say 'gays and lesbians'? Aren't lesbians a subset of gays? It's like saying 'cars and convertibles' or 'alcohol and whiskey'.

They are mixing up sexual orientation with gender.  Only 3 genders on that list.

what_now: And this hurts you...how? If someone wants to describe themselves as gender queer, asexual, intersex, poly etc, this negatively affects your life in WHAT way?

Polyamory isn't a sexual orientation, it's just a means to live within your orientation. I'm straight, wife is bi, our girlfriend is bi, wife's boyfriend is straight, we are all living what i guess is considered a polyamorous lifestyle. Labels are stupid, we're all just people. I don't want my own special box to check or recognition, i just want the government to stay out of my business.

I don't even know where to start with that, so I'll just start making up definitions.
boi - total gay flamer, especially of the Asian variety
ally - wingman
biromantic - much like Raj from Big Bang Theory
drag ruler - person in drag who either things they really do rule the place or who is otherwise very fashion-strict
gender anarchistic - super militant feminist - like sovereign citizens are to teabaggers
genderfluid - weft
graysexual - is holding out for the grey men to abduct them and do kinky things to them
heteroflexible - girl kissing o' clock
homoromantic - prefers the opposite sex and too chicken to sexually try out the other side
neutrois - isn't this a breed of dog?
stone - ???????
trigender - There's a tab, a slot, and a third option?
two-spirit - basement dweller that thinks Joan of Arc or some other famous person channels through them

Seriously, what the farkety fark fark.
