I know someone who had triplets where two were identical twins and the third was fraternal to the other two. Apparently that isn't terribly uncommon as she's found people (online) who have triplets like hers.

This.

My friend and his wife had twins, and marked one of their toenails to tell them apart. Eventually one got noticeably heavier than the other, and even then you could only tell by lifting them.

That's the first thing I noticed, too.  All of that hair on his head will be gone within 3 years.  I think I've aged 7 years in the past 2 because of my two kids.

This woman had about that same weight to give birth to, but broken up into 3 easy pieces. Probably hardly even felt it.

In college we had at least three sets of identical twins living on our dorm floor.  After a while they didn't seem to look alike anymore...it was weird to hear people say they couldn't tell them apart.

Um, no. Not in the US anyway, which has a habit of implanting multiple embryos during IVF. . .

"The triplets were produced when a single, fertilised egg split into three."

NOPE. Cells divide by two which means there were 4 proto babies and one of them died. What did mom do that killed it?

They may have been conceived naturally, but i bet some unnatural foreplay was involved.

or this is a better explanation, but also supports your theory

It is rare for triplets to be completely monozygotic, meaning that all three children formed from a single egg that split three ways, or split into two and then one of the two split again, ultimately resulting in three embryos with the same general DNA characteristics. Some monozygotic triplets are actually quadruplets where one embryo has vanished or been reabsorbed.

Monozygotic triplets are always of the same gender, either all boys or all girls.

Abox: In college we had at least three sets of identical twins living on our dorm floor.  After a while they didn't seem to look alike anymore...it was weird to hear people say they couldn't tell them apart.

[csb] I dated a Mexican girl with an identical twin in high school. Her sister got jealous and tried to fool around with me on a lunch break, it was pretty damn obvious I had the wrong twin as soon as I kissed her. The one I was dating would just as soon push me against a wall and stick her tongue down my throat, or tackle me and do the same, we were kinda lovey-dovey most of the time so I guess her twin thought we kissed gently. We didn't.

I just told her, "Um, I can tell you two apart", pushed her off of me, and was forced to decide whether or not to tell her sister. I decided not to, it was stupid on the one's part, but I was aware it was a stupid high school jealousy thing and mentioning it would be a permanent wedge between two people who were much more connected than I could fathom at that age. I dunno if the one ever came clean with the other, but there were major physical differences in their body language and very minor ones in appearance I picked up on because I didn't want to ever fark up like that again. I still kiss the palms of women I'm with when I greet them("my" twin had a scar on her palm), it seems charming but it's just an ingrained habit now. I really liked that broad.

Then we broke up because I had a thing for looking at pretty women. Still do. Ladies... if I keep you around it's because I like you, I'm sorry if I find other women more aesthetically pleasing, I may in fact watch them for a bit. That has... little to do with why I'm with you. Regardless, she was farking FINE, and so was her sister. Ran into her sister once after high school, and turned her down for a date, I'd still feel bad about doing that. I'll peddle drugs or kick someone's head in for money, or would at the time, but dating an old flame's sister? (let alone an identical twin) fark me, but I do have some personal morals.[/csb]

/high school relationships
//glad I stayed out of that, if she wanted/wants to come clean with her sister she can.
///twins are something special, our relationship wasn't, we were both just young and hot and wanted each other.
////and now I just want to be young and hot and have someone young and hot want me, this shiat gets complicated as you get older.

Tattoo those little suckers.  Friend of mine had her twin boys tattooed with freckles behind their ears as infants so she could tell them apart (one had one freckle, one had two) - they didn't even realize it until they were in their teens.

~~MOOOOOOM~~

They thought she was psychic all that time. Then they pretty much forgot about it for a while. Then twin #1 realized their freckles were the same shade as a Crayola marker. Didn't work on Mom, but I'm sure they had a hell of a good time messing with everyone else.

Meh, parents pierce their infants' ears all the time, too: a dot is hardly a life-alerting modification.

That's actually why I asked. My mom is horrified that people pierce their babies' ears. She made me choose it myself when I was 9,  and she thought it might be a deterrent to getting my nose pierced when I was 16. Ha!

But yeah, it matters to me what the kids think. Funny about the Crayola marker though.

She looked down into her uterus and said "No WAY are all four of you coming out of me. Draw straws, roll dice, I don't care, but one of you has to go back."
