That's not really fair for punishing a guy for stealing one HP Color Cartridge.

/AM I RIGHT?

If he served time would taking away his punishment be an additional punishment? I thought you could only give out one sentence?

Seems like a lot of money for just a pint of ink. I think you misread that.

Not to mention they're already making him pay back what he stole in addition to the jail time.

The real question is "how many California state employee only stole $359,000 worth of office supplies and got away with it"

And there shouldn't be civil trials after there is a criminal court decision, right, OJ?

He's not a state employee, he's a San Diego County employee, just for clarification....and the law was passed by the legislature a couple of years ago and nobody has challenged it yet, though there have been five other instances where it has been instituted.  Basically it only applies to felonies and they can only take the portion of the pension the person earned during the course of when the criminal act began and the date which it ended....some lawyer type can probably explain it better than me.

Say what you want about the evil printer companies, but the definitely saved a bunch of trees by hastening the paperless world along.

F*CK LEXMARK

I bought a $200 b/w laser printer and the goddamn piece of sh*t died before I even changed the toner cartridge. I only used it sporadically too, not like it was an office printer printing hundreds of pages daily or anything.

So this idiot gets to spend 3 years in the can and pay full restitution, but a moderately attractive female personal assistant gets no time as long as she pays back half.

Mericuh! What a country!

Dude its printers not pensions, its cheaper to just throw away the printers.  Idiots I swear...

IANAL, but I think they also pay him back the money he paid into the pension during that time.

New printers are cheaper than ink now (and they come with ink).

Poor landfills.

Only if you are an attractive female. And it is half of what was stolen.

You totally did not get the headline. I will explain it.
Printer ink is expensive and subby (the submitter of the link) was trying to imply that a pint of printer ink costs $360,000. Of course this is not true. This is called an "exaggeration" and it is a device that comedians sometimes use to instill a humorous tone to their diatribe.
Frequently on this website someone will post a picture from a Simpson's episode that shows a stand up comedian saying "that's the joke" to illustrate this concept of humor.

Is this a new schtick, or one you've been doing for a while?

Either way, I see great potential and I shall follow your Fark career with interest. Hats off, sir.

Well, unfortunately the problem isn't so much any specific manufacturer, it's just that printers inherently suck unless you are able to spend a lot of money maintaining them. I have a Samsung laser that was in the same price range that just died before emptying its first toner cartridge... So I've been shopping for a replacement, and found that there simply is no "good" choice. Every printer made by anyone has a chorus of, "This is the worst printer evar," somewhere in the reviews. So you just have to suck it up and accept that it's going to be frustrating, and try to minimize the amount you need to use it.

There isn't quite enough in the article to say if that law could be successfully challenged in ERISA grounds.  But I would give favorable odds it would.  The Feds look dimly on taking away vested benefits, even in the form of restitution.

I work for Hewlett-Packard in the printer division located in San Diego. When I saw the link was about a guy in San Diego, I thought it might have been one of my coworkers selling ink.

I do testing (I have about 30 printers in my cube) and each one comes with its own ink, but I just put the ink in a drawer and just keep using the same old ink cartridges since I don't do printing for my tests.

I call the drawer full of printer ink "my retirement fund." (It'll probably have expired or something, or printers will be gone by the time I retire, so maybe I'd have to give it to a museum.)

The guy is 33 years old, so he's not eligible for a pension yet, and hopefully nobody is going to hire him for a public agency ever again.
