So...shooting someone in the face would be a severe breach of decorum in this game, I take it.

I can't wait until Conan plays this one.

BS.  The goal of a Jane Austen game should be to start from the servant's quarters and get married to a rich English gentleman.  At least according to my stereotypes of Jane Austen's literature.

Given that the players will be 99.999% women, who's going to take the part of the English gentlemen?

So are they going to have the monthly conversation on their forums that all other MMOs had?  "Do men play Jane Austin Online?" and "Why do girls have guy toons? Isn't that gay?".

I would subscribe to this game simply to go to the inaugural in-game ball and shout 'Sup biatches?' upon my entry.

Actually I'm betting the mix will be one third women, one third lonely guys pretending to like it in hopes of snagging an online girlfriend, and a remaining third of guys pretending to be women for various reasons.

Would personally love a game that would allow me to reduce the whole setting of Wuthering Heights to a smoking crater.

I'm curious how they're going to institute the "gossip to hurt other people" thing. So...the players are going to role-play and come up with half-true gossips? Or is it going to be some lame, "click here to generically gossip on [player x]" and then player x's reputation meter takes a hit? Or is the game going to weave a number of gossipy story lines for the players to choose from?

On second thought, I'm really not that curious about it.

I did not click on the article, so perhaps this is already answered, but....

How on earth do they expect to make anything other than a mobile app for $100,000k that's worth playing?

I've seen the Jane Austen endless runner, I don't really see why this stuff gets so much attention.  Yes it's a gimmick, a strange gimmick, but also a lame one.  Meh, gimmicks have to be cool or fun for me to take any interest.

You won't like several parts of Saints Row 4 then.

Not really a whipped husband or a gay man NTTAWWT, but I'm interested.

Not only am I a Dad of a teenage feminista girl gamer, but I like stories with strong female characters (damn you Netflix). I thought Downton Abbey was pretty good. I was iffy on the social-emotional intrigue but more interested in the historical/political intrigue happening in the story.

I don't think that they could make it even remotely as interesting as say WoW, but it's a new area. Video games that treat women as people instead of a trope? That's great

They save money on not having to program the characters doing anything but standing around.

I feel sorry for the developers having limped over the line and who now have to make an MMO for $100k. It would have been more merciful had they just come up slightly short.

Eh, sorry but Japan's got them beat by a country mile with their date sims.

Hmmm.  Judging from the ending of Saint's Row IV (so, um, spoilers), Saint's Row V will be about Jane Austen shooting somebody in the face.

Lol, you don't know how right you are.  I actually didn't like Saints Row 4 and stopped playing it about 30% in.  I was a huge fan of the franchise up until then too :(.  Although I will say 3 wasn't my favorite, it was leaps and bounds better than 4.  I know I might be in the minority on this issue, but I played Saints Row because I liked Saints Row.  It was silly and fun of course, but it was about being a gangbanger taking over a city.  I don't really see how aliens, being in a matrix, and having superpowers has anything to do with it.  When a game that's gameplay mechanics are about stealing cars and shooting people (yes I know that's simplifying things) no longer requires you to steal cars or shoot people because you have superpowers to fly everywhere and can use your fists to insta-kill enemies, I'm pretty sure you've jumped the shark.

/end of rant

Yeah, at this rate they'd have to spend one hell of a lot more moderating the game than making and maintaining it in the first place.

This won't end well.

Maybe if it's Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.  Or maybe if I can go grouse hunting with my hounds?  Or host a party then go on walks with companions on old gravel country roads while my parents walk about 30 paces behind us.

You DID see that this article is hosted at Jezebel, didn't you?

Half of the crowd there HATES men and would deny there's any such thing as a "gentleman", thus rallying for a game world without male players as a choice, and the other half are butch lesbians who will BE the male characters in the game.

I've never played a dating sim, but I would think that in order for a Jane Austen-themed video game to work, a developer would run into a lot of the same AI challenges.  Unless they're planning to go the "Choose Your Own Adventure" route and pre-program every possible interaction with every NPC, which I doubt they could manage due to the sheer number of possible interactions.

Now, if they could build an AI for an NPC that could persuade a player to make a decision that they would not otherwise make without the player realizing what's going on (think computer-controlled Emma and player-controlled Harriet), I'd be very impressed.

...and as soon as I hit "Add Comment" I realized that most dating sims probably have pre-determined outcomes for every possible interaction, thus eliminating the AI problem entirely.  Although I still have my doubts that such a technique would work well in an MMORPG that's so heavily based on interpersonal reactions (since the number of possibilities would grow exponentially with the number of players).

I'm glad that the gaming industry is finally making games for a more diverse audience then the 13 year old who yells "your a queermosexual!"

I'm just not sure how to make an engaging gameplay mechanic with what's been described so far.

I do hope it goes live, and I hope it has decent gameplay mechanics. It will be a very interesting experiment to see if a game like this will do well or not.

If the developers add a level where Mark Twain digs up Jane Asten's corpse and beats her over the head with her own shin-bone for extra points, I'm all for it.

That they had to beg for money to fund it is a sign of how bad a game it will be.

There's tons of games out there not made for 13 year olds.  They just don't get as much attention or make as much money.

My hubby and I played the downloadable alpha of the game and while it has an interesting premise, I am a little concerned on how this game will work in the large scale.

Players can form "families" which are basically guilds, so I wonder if families will own businesses and fight over government contracts/resources like the real regency period.
