Population density FTW.

I think it's still a viable model for dense areas, just not for the Blockbuster corporation. There's a few local video rental places that are doing fine here. The problem with Blockbuster was that they had one on seemingly every corner and taking up several thousand square feet of retail space. Plus the corporate structure was pretty bloated, they had sponsorships and all sorts of wasteful spending.

Video rentals still work anywhere high speed internet is still expensive.  Many people in Mexico can connect to internet with their smart phones, but home high speed cable is still expensive and rare outside larger cities.

Does Blockbuster do business in South Africa, isn't it one of the countries with very expensive internet?

They also work well with the elderly, and if they stock classic films not available from places like Redbox or on Netflix.
