Maybe they think that if they pay them less they'll get thinner from starvation. They're just being compassionate. Or something.

"Starvation" wages"?

Frank Luntz must be on the case.

More like "subsidized by my tax dollars" wages.

So this 'blog' is actually promoting starvation before decent wages.

I think I've had enough internet for today.

Came here to say this, I thought it was pretty common knowledge.

I used to make regular trips to the food bank to pick up care packages for a severely disabled cousin and her similarly afflicted roommate.  It was probably 80-90% day-old baked goods and other sugary crap.

In the upper right, there was something about "A tribute to Andrew Breitbart, a great man", and I instantly knew what that site was about. Nice of them to warn you like that. Sort of like how poisonous south American tree frogs are brightly colored to warn you "Do not touch".

There is no such thing as un-intentional starvation in the US, we have too many food assistance programs and even if we didn't the side-effect of our use of food as a foreign policy tool would pretty much drown all of us in all the calories we want.

Living wage in the US is generally about housing, utilities, transportation, and child support (in the sense of feeding/clothing/educating children, not the legal term), not food.  Anyone that says "starving wage" instead is probably a bit dim, but being stupid doesn't actually negate your right to a fair wage for honest work so that doesn't really mean anything.

Calories in/calories out is the most important factor. You can eat 5000 calories per day of tomatoes, potatoes, or Big Macs and sit on your arse. You will weight the same.

It's right up there with "you're not really poor if you have a refrigerator."

because they eat empty calories.   you can be overweight and still be malnourished.

2013-12-05 09:32:38 AM
There was once a time in human history where the standard of poverty was so low that anyone who could afford to eat enough calories to sustain their metabolism was considered milddle class. Society has advanced. It is fair that we raise the bar of poverty to a higher level accordingly. If society continues to advance, there may come a day when anyone who can't afford plastic surgery and a robot butler will be considered a wage slave.

There's also the one about them having refrigerators. You see, poor people in other countries sometimes resort to selling their organs. Since poor people here don't do things like that, they aren't really poor. Or some such bullshiat.

The raw materials for a healthy salad with balanced amounts of protein and healthy complex carbohydrates can run up to four dollars per serving depending on the market.

A Big Mac costs $1.29.

The raw materials for a meal with lean chicken breast, a whole grain starch, and fresh (not canned) vegetables can run to more than $3 a serving.

Rice and beans with fatty meat can run $1-1.50 a serving. Without deeply back-breaking physical labor, this diet will make you fat and diabetic (rice has an extremely high glycemic load, higher even than white bread, and will make you hungry again and will shock your insulin).

That doesn't even begin to touch the difficulty of maintaining variety without eating unhealthily.

Eating healthily when you're not in the field all day doing backbreaking labor is hard. Your body can literally be starving for vitamins and minerals you need and desperately craving more and more to eat even while you're stuffing your face with stuff that you think "keeps you going," and it keeps building and building and building. I make good money, I have enough time to browse and compare recipes and cook, and even I have serious trouble ensuring I have enough energy to work while still staying under my weight loss calorie budget. Now exactly how is someone very likely born into poverty who has to work two jobs to put food on the table and has to spend hours each week trying to keep the benefits that make life slightly more affordable going to have the time to eat healthily?

These people are fighting for the money and the time they need to be healthy, douchemitter. Maybe you'd know that if you pulled your head out of your ass, listened to what they had to say, and had that basic human quantity called "empathy."
