(Basketball Bicker)   The Knicks-Nets matchup went from being one of the most anticipated for the battle of New York, to being a matchup of desperation and survival. My, what a difference a few months makes   (basketballbicker.com) divider line 28

The Knicks will get in.  I am not so sure about the Nets.

Derron Williams is looking like a major bust.

Was watching Mike & Mike this morning go off on how bad the situation in New York had become; repeatedly saying how the Knicks are a disaster, that Carmelo Anthony is history, etc.  All of which surprised me as the last time I paid attention to news about the Knicks, they were suppose to be right up there as an up and coming elite team in the East.

So what happened?

They play no defense, they thought JR Smith would be the same productive player he was after getting paid, Carmelo can not win by himself, all the threes that were dropping last year are misses, they traded away Novak and brought in Andrea Bargnani, Felton is playing poorly, Tyson Chandler is hurt, the team is mentally weak, Dolon is still building the team, Shumpart is in the coach's doghouse and is not playing hard or being productive.

That is all I got.

they are the so-called "jewel" of the NBA.  when they show the faintest hint of being relevant, the media goes nuts.  this is called "Notre Dame" or "Washington Redskins" syndrome.

and i don't follow the NBA but from what i hear on STR, Jason Kidd is doing nothing for the Nets (aside from his coke spill incident).  I think i heard where a player on the team said he isn't coaching, he's just letting an assistant draw up plays, but then yesterday i heard KIdd relieved one of the coaches of his duties.

in short, does he even make it to the all-star break?

What does he mean, "the rivalry is on hold"?  They're both shooting for the top lottery pick aren't they?  Every pass is going to end up in the 5th row.

Neither own their picks.

They won 55 games last season, their suckiness is a story even if you hate NY.

Here's where it gets better: in this loaded draft year, the Knicks' #1 pick belongs to Denver, and the Nets' belongs to the Celtics (though Atlanta has the right to claim it from a previous deal). So no help there!

I don't understand Williams at all.  He looked like a top-5 PG when he first got to the Nets, then they start surrounding him with some good players and he looks like garbage.

Maybe he has just realized that he is made of glass so he is more hesitant to push anything, but he is not anywhere near the same player that he was with the Jazz or his first year with the Nets.

Or, he was a product of Jerry Sloan.

That could be it also. While he was good initially for the Nets, he wasn't ever as good as he was under Sloan.

As a Nuggets fan, that is the most hilarious part of the Knick's troubles. Sadly, the East is just way too pathetic for the Knicks not to recover and make the playoffs. Hell, they are 3-13 and only 3 games out of first in the Atlantic.

I follow the Lakers and kind of know what happens in the rest of the league. And with the Lakers being meh this year, I'm really not following the league all that much.

But it seems to me that an NBA (like the NFL) coach needs some coaching experience. Heck, even some TV experience seems valuable in the current NBA. Doc Rivers and Mark Jackson went the TV route and are pretty successful. Pat Riley went that route as well.

Living in New York (although with neither team my own favorite), it kills me that they're both so horribly run.  They've managed to strangulate themselves in the cap, plus trade away so many picks they can't rebuild.  Just awful situations.

Brooklyn kind of surprises me.  Ok, Joe Johnson's contract is horrendous, and trading multiple picks for him was ungodly.  I thought D-Wiliams has been horrible for a while, totally overrated, but I didn't think the Boston trade would be dead in the water like it has.  Only reasons worth watching this team are Miles Plumlee and Shaun Livingston.  The owner is horrible, the GM is horrible.

The Knicks do not surprise me.  If your 'second best' scoring option is JR Smith you're gonna have trouble.  With the Nuggets he was used correctly -- bring him off the bench.  If he'shiatting, ride his crazy heat.  If he's not, yank him.  Kidd leaving, Anthony is no leader.  Bargani makes the team defense even worse, plus Chandler goes down.  Felton is a chunky miserable player.  Last year was fool's gold.  This is a crappy team.

Unbelievably, both teams may still make the playoffs.  That's how lousy the Eastern Conference is this year.  35 wins could get you in.

I think we will.  If they continue to struggle Melo will pull himself for the year with an injury.  Problem is that Kronke-mart Jr will blow the pick or be a cheapass and let they player walk after their rookie contract.

Well, I hope your right, but the Eastern Conference is just too terrible for me to be optimistic about it.

The 8-12 Celtics.

In last year's playoffs the Knicks realized that they have zero chance of getting past Indiana or Miami to get to the finals.  They aren't playing for anything and they all know it.  Carmelo will go somewhere else to finish out his career as a high-volume shot-chucker who plays little defense and only gets assists by accident.

It is New York. So it is very important. Obviously. Otherwise we'd have had decades of similar stories about the Clippers and Golden State. NY uber alles
